Peter Moore: ‘We DO care about Backwards Compatibility’

A little while back we reported on the ‘end’ of Backwards Compatibility. Peetah Moore said to Kikizo that ‘Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility’. According to an interview Peter Moore had with Major Nelson in his latest Podcast this was taken out of context. The original statement was made when Peetah was asked about E3 2005 when MS was really vague about how BC was going to work out. Now a year later everyone knows how it turned out and nobody is concerned anymore. According to Moore they are continuing to get as close as they can to their stated target of getting every Xbox game backwards compatible on the Xbox 360.

He also says that MS really does care about BC and that the next update is going to include ‘20 or more’ titles including Lego Star Wars and Doom III.

Lego Star Wars

Listen to Major Nelson’s latest Podcast here, the bit on BC is around 30:20. He also says some things about Wii60 and how he felt E3 went.

Meh. Should have kept your old Xbox if you were that bothered.

It was the same with the PS2. Everyone thought it would be really good to play PS1 games. Then when you got the PS2, you realised that you actually don’t want to play the old games anymore, and is pointless.

Spend your time on something more worthwhile Microsoft!

I’m somewhat interested in back compat. I never played GTA San Andreas. I picked it up for cheap and have been playing it recently. It looks great through my 360 on my HDTV.

If the 360 wasn’t back compat at all, I wouldn’t lose any sleep. It is nice to have though.

thank goodness doom 3 is included. I never had an xbox and went with the 360 over the ps3 for the reason that xbox was capable of running doom 3. I have been waiting since xmas to play it!

But yes I agree, if I had an xbox 1 I would have kept it anyway. Believe it or not there were some ps1 games that my kids could not play on my ps2, not that it crashed just the disc would not read. Another reason we kept the old ps1’s.

i did not buy a 400€ HD system for old games

I’ve always held on to my old consoles so I could play the old games. Having BC on the Xbox360 is just an added bonus. I feel like MS has made enough games compatible, and they can move on now. IN a few more months, I’m pretty sure all of my original XBOX games will be gathering dust… hell.. they already are

how about panzer dragoon, petey? i’d kill to be able to play sega’s masterpiece on my 360.

I’ve got to say… I love your blog! The Sony article in particular! I actually found myself enjoying reading about someone elses life and thoughts! And all because I mis-clicked!

Back on topic… I would never buy an old game for a new system, regardless of how good it was, because I would rather save my money for the next big game!

hey, thanks Rossko. i’m glad you enjoyed the (accidental) visit to my blog. :)

i know what you’re saying about new games, and i agree. but at the same time, there are some CLASSIC x-box titles, panzer in particular, that i’d love to be able to play on my 360 now that i no longer have an x-box.

+1 blog for you.

+1 cheers for you, Doug.

I never had an original Xbox, yadda, you’ve heard this before, but this is also an important update gameplay-wise. This way we can get the original Lego Star Wars characters on our 360 HDDs so we can play as them in the Xbox 360 version of The Original Trilogy.

I mean, come on. 720p Lego Natalie Portman. Duh.

Unrealchampionship 2!!!! Mechassault 2!!!!!!!!! please, give me those BC’s

Just wait for Gears of War!!!!!!! and Chromehounds!!!!!!!! Saving yourself some cash in the long term!!!!!!

For that dry period in the first few weeks (and to a lesser extent, right now) backwards compatibility was a killer feature. I never had an XBOX so it was great to play Halo, Half-Life 2, Splinter Cell 3, Ninja Gaiden and Jade Empire.

I’m surprised people here don’t think backwards compatibility is a good idea; there were some great XBOX games, and they’re selling for $15 - $25 so it’s easy to visit (or revisit) some old titles.
