Grand Theft Auto IV’s game engine

News4gamers has put out some news. Interestingly, Rockstar has announced a new game engine that’s already being used today in an Xbox 360 game. What game you ask? The only other next-gen Rockstar game on any console as of today. Table Tennis! The engine will power GTA:IV when it’s released.

To see the Graphic Engine that Rockstar plans to use in GTA IV for Xbox 360 and PS3 in action click here. That is right, their recently released Table Tennis game is powered by a new game engine called RAGE (the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) and according to some Rockstar reps in a recent interview on MTV this is also the game engine that will power future Rockstar games, including the much anticipated GTA IV for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The site says that they’ll probably tone down the skin textures to keep the framerate smooth, we’ll have to wait and see.

OOOO-oooh

Maybe GTA won’t look like a budget game anymore?

Hopefully.

Tone down the skin textures? I didn’t think they looked all that good anyway.

Well they probably mean the triple-pipelined sweatdrops and everything aren’t going to be making a freeroaming gangster game ;)

Don’t you find it worrying that only after a few months release of the Xbox 360 they’re already having to tone down games?

Nope… There is a difference when there are only 2 characters on screen or 100’s and 100s of cars like in GTA. It’s normal totone down the graphix this way

How do you mean ‘tone down’. It’s totally normal to make it less shiny and pretty when there’s a whole city of people instead of only 2. Just like the boxing game, ping pong was all they could pull. To make a whole city with graphics like TableTennis and FightNight you need an uber machine.. so again. worry?

No, not at all. For the reasons see the 2 excellent comments above me.

Expecting them not to tone down this engine for GTA would be like expecting the FNR3 engine on the next WoW.

I dont think much should be toned down no matter how much is on the screen. Are we giving rockstar a free pass to make a game that is toned down because we expected that last gen? The 360 is a powerful system, we should expect great things and developers should try to make great games, not get free passes to tone it down. Lets try to raise our expectations people, I didn’t pay $400 for the 360 just to settle for toned down games.

I think you are mixing up the toned down bit, it’s still going to be a hell of a lot better than the previous outings but they ain’t going to look like FNR3 or Table Tennis I don’t really think can be judged as a cop-out/free pass. Its not like any other machine on the market is going to be any different you just can’t apply the same graphical quality to a free roaming game with hundreds of things happening at the one time to one that has a static enviroment but these free roaming games are still quite clearly been put up a notch from previous gen systems.

Take a look at Morrowind (great game, shit graphics) on the Xbox and Oblivion on the 360, clearly the graphcs have been upped but they still don’t sit at the level of detail seen in FNR3 or table tennis. Better yet if you want to use these two titles to compare the jump in graphical quality then compare them to the same style of game on the previous gen consoles, FNR3 don’t look anywhere near as good on the Xbox or PS2.

Nice. Now I hope they’ll make GTA4 a bit more cartooney (?) than Table Tennis. The Getaway sucked because it was trying to be too realistic (well and a lot of other reasons) so I hope GTA won’t go down that way.
