Moore: “Xbox 360 Controller too complex”
At the EA Community event at Microsoft studios, a couple of guys had the opportunity to ask Peter Moore a bunch of questions. Gamertag Radio recorded it and Next Generation gives us a small summary of the most important questions being answered.
The interesting part in the interview is where he says he loves innovation and he thinks it’s imporant to try to appeal to a broader audience with new input devices for example.
“…Shoulder buttons, triggers, analog sticks, d-pads, I mean, there’s a lot going on there when you compare it to the old Atari 2600 button-and-stick, which everybody could pick up and have some fun with.”
He continued, “Clearly, I think that the Wii is trying to get back to those days, although when I picked it up, I was surprised how much stuff there is on there, and it took me a while even then to get going on those things. I’m a huge fan of any kind of innovation you can try and do that will make a broader reach for games, because as an industry we’ve got to do that. We’ve got to bring more people in that are currently maybe intimidated when they look at that controller.
“I look even in my house… there’s no way that my 14-year-old daughter can really grasp [the standard controller]. She loves to play racing games, but that’s about it. And she’s frustrated because of the button configurations and the use of triggers–she just doesn’t quite get it.
“We’re doing a lot of stuff there. Nothing that we’re ready to talk about, and we’re not going to force anything that is not going to be intuitive and innovative.”
If you read through the lines he’s saying that they’re working on new controller designs. Perhaps they’re interested in using the upcoming Vision camera in the same way the gimmick loving Sony guys are using it. Or this rumored patented ‘relative range camera calibration’ stuff might turn into something usefull. It could also just be a revamped controller just like Microsoft did with the Xbox, when they replaced the bigass Duke controller with the much slicker S controller. Only time will tell.

i would think maybe a secondary optional controller, not really replacing the current one. it has already won awards and has been widely agreed to be one of the best controllers in a long time. the only thing i wish for them to fix is the d-pad, not really up to the same standard as the rest of the controller. other then that it has been a great feeling/playing controller, even for people who loved the Duke (like me) with big hands use the 360 controller with ease.
get your daughter to play geometry wars give her hand to eye coordination
i love it cant put the bloody thing down
got 850,000 today
whoop whoop
That did work miracles for my gf as a matter of fact: she was completely incapable of doing anything intelligent with the controller until she’d practiced Geometry Wars till 100k score. Consequently Tomb Raider was relatively easy
IMO, The 360 controller is as good as it gets.
Is he suggesting the release a controller with a chip in it and the camera can detect where it is in the room? Like the Wiimote?
That’s just a rumor brought up by me
the 360 controller is simpler than the xbox s. the shoulder buttons are much more assecible than the black and white buttons. there is like a total of 4 jewel buttons ont he front of the pad. its no more complex then the ps2 pad. but i guess they have a good idea, and i cant wait to see it.
The more I hear from moore, the more he sounds like he talks too fast for his brain to keep up.
i would like it if they brought out smaller versions of the same controller, give people the choice of smaller or larger control pads. I’d prefer a smaller control pad of the original xbox360 design.
My fave controller of all time was the Sega Mega Drive 6 button (a,b,c x,y,z) which got upgraded with shoulder buttons on the Saturn version.
Moore’s daughter sounds like she should not be allowed to play unsupervised. She must be a special needs child.
Boy, how dumb is this guy.
First, the interview about backwards compatibility, that nobody really cares about it.
And now, he“s complaining about the controller of his actual console, in public.
I“ve never seen somebody in such a position doing such bad marketing.
Yeah, no kidding. OHH I have waited so long for a USB controller for games like halo PC, and the fact that a USB connection for my console which has more CPU power than all my (3)PC’s put together. If perhaps Microsoft did not employ the strategy of delaying the best titles for next-gen then I might* not be over concerned with BC but as it stands Forza and basically an upgraded version of old Gen need for speed are the only racer games worth playing and despite GRAW being brilliant, there is still no title that graces my 360 more than Halo2 and…..Halo1! how in the hell could I play any of the games mentioned without extensive (less than PC) input methods such as what is now employed. The only thing a real gamer like me would like to see developed is perhaps more custom capabilities for button layout. Microsoft better not start catering to retard mini-moores in hopes of widening their market share because no-one will ever be able to cater to kids better than Nintendo! Stupid noob-tard antiquated P.moore better not screw up the micros formula like a harlot.
a secondary optional controller with the new rumble feature from Immersion.
OMG is it april already? Kuz theres no way this can be true….
lol, seems his daughter likes driving games but she will never be able to learn how to drive a real car if a video game controller is too hard for her.
if your 14yo cant play video games then please get a visectomy.
