Xbox 360 Dashboard update released
TeamXbox notifies us the Xbox guys and girls at Microsoft released a mandatory Dashboard update today for Xbox 360 consoles as we had announced before. Only a limited number of fixes is explicitly mentioned, so for now it is unknown what exactly has been modified.
According to the article, “there are no new features in this release, but rather a series of fixes and enhancements. Some of the items the update addresses are”:
- Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data.
- Users reporting blank Friends List on the Xbox 360 dash after muting a friend while playing a game in Backwards Compatibility mode.
- Improved synching of games played to Web and in console.
- Network settings: keyboard does now allow entry of - (dash) character in the keyboard.
As it explicitly states these are only some of the things addressed by this update, so it remains to be seen what else is fixed, and whether this is already the update that fixes stability and achievements issues. The update is also confirmed at Xbox.com, stating the following changes:
- Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
- Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
- Increased accuracy of “last time played.”
- Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
- More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
Although many people would have liked it the update does not enable background downloading, but that was never announced by any of the inside sources anyway. US owners have already reported receiving the update, and a few European owners have also received it. The update is completely automatic when you connect to Xbox Live and start an Xbox Live enabled game.
Update: Initial reports suggest the lockups in PGR3 when going to the Guide are fixed. This would indicate the patch indeed solves all stability problems as promised.

* Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
* Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
* Increased accuracy of “last time played.”
* Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
* More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
UK user here, and I got prompted to download it as soon as I turned on the 360. I now have Dashboard version 2.0.2255.0.
this update was a load of crap if ya ask me
I personally prefer updates fixing a lot of invisible things than updates that fix some visible things and leave us behind with instable games that spontaneously eat savegames and lock up whenever we open the Guide. But thankfully, we didn’t ask you
So when does the “big” dashboard update come?
@curry
will games freeze less now when u open the dashboard for example?
DUDE: How am I supposed to know? This is what Microsoft disclosed, and that’s all I know. If I knew more I would have posted it.
No, its fixed! Its great! I can finally check users profile when i play PGR3, and the users are in the racing lobby. And its not freezing, thats finally fixed.
k, so well we actually got an update as promised, not a big one but atleast we got an update. i hope the COD2 update is true too and btw, this is what the dash update does in other words:
” * Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
* Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
* Increased accuracy of “last time played.”
* Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
* More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
This free update is available to all Xbox Live members. Your console will be updated the next time you sign in to Xbox Live.”
am on the dashboard now and not getting an update prompt, im in europe if it matters.
thx for the info XBOX DUDE, btw after finishing playing NBA2K6 and then trying to go back to the dashboard, it always freezes, i hope thats fixed too…. did u try any other games that used to freeze XBOX DUDE?
oh wait im downloading it now!
@Evan, how did it happen? u said u couldnt get it… u were just in the central dashboard and the update poped?
DUDE: try starting up a ‘live enabled game’, I started an arcade game and my Xbox started updating instead.
k i updated mine too… the dashboard seems to work better now for sure… this update is good in the end ah
btw Nino, do u have MSN/AIM/ICQ? just wanna keep in touch and so we can also play some on XBL too..
My 360 just started updating immediately when I logged into Live.
@DUDE, i entered geometry wars and it prompted me to update it. And nino, you should get some forums up on this.
Yes when we have a chance we’re getting a forum
yea we should have a forum here so we can talk about stuff and what not… will be cool…
DUDE: I just have the PGR game..
k, i will try NBA2K6 then.. in few tho, not now.. the dashboard seems to work better now with no doubt… its not choppy anymore like it used to be so ya.. its cool… i’ll say its a nice update even tho they didnt add any new features but still its great that they fixed these awefull bugs(the freezings in games)
“Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data.”
Thank God for this. I had a problem back in December related to a botched gamertag change, and part of what happened is that my profile and all my saved games were deleted. I sent mail to Major Nelson (Larry Hryb) and told him that improved data security was a MUST. Glad to hear that they’ve addressed it to some extent.
Now let’s have Internet radio built-in! I would love to be able to listen to Groove Salad (SomaFM.com) through my Xbox 360!
Evan: I really want a forum too but I’m not in the position to create one, it’ll come, hang in tight :).
Clay : yeah it’s really great, friend of mine lost all his games too.
There’s some work to do before I create a forum. Apart from deciding on a platform I’ll have to find one which integrates with Frontpage and Wiki for login sections, which means I’ll have to finish some code
But considering our recent popularity I’ll make it an asap priority
yea and Nino, whats ur AIM/MSN/ICQ or Email? i just wanna chat and keep in touch
If you are not getting prompted for the AU, then test your connection to live (System Blade->Netowork Setting->Test Xbox Live Connection) and you’ll get the prompt.
Above from Major Nelson’s webby.
DUDE ; nah my messenger is busy enough as it is, sorry. You can join our IRC channal, #xbox360 on irc.tweakers.net if you want.
Gjyeah i can w8 till they fix Call of Duty
OMG tell me about it i cant even play single player ver of COD2 it completely locks up. The Activision Level unlock doesnt even work still freezes no matter waht level i choose so annoying
One more day for the CoD2 patch if Infinity Ward are doing their stuff right
It’s an autoupdate, in which you can choose yes or no to update:
new version: 2.0.2255.0
But it’s not clear to me what this update implies (i.e. plugged in my webcam, nothing happens).
For now, just wait for COD 2 update.
Pronto !!!
Hmmm I got the update and now I’m missing alot of my game saves….
