Giant enemy crab battle? That’ll be $69.99, thanks

At prices like these the PS3 better be a small, sentient robot capable of doing household chores for you. Not only are we going to be gushing $599 USD on the console, but we could very well be paying anything from $59.99 to $99.99 on our Japanese history fix, according to Playstation Magazine.

For the uninitiated among you, wheras the Xbox 360 and the Wii use good ol’ DVD-9 format for their games, Sony’s going to publish Playstation 3 titles on their new Blu-Ray format (45 GB compared to the namesake size of the DVD-9, nine gigs). The Wii games are expected to retail for $39-49 and the Xbox 360 games run a bit more expensive because of their inclusion of high-def support.

Blu-Ray, however, is considerably more expensive to produce than DVD-9, and Sony is already losing a ton of money on the PS3 itself. So who pays the extra? You and I.

PSM: Can we expect PS3 games to be priced in the same range as Xbox 360 titles?

Sony interviewee: Generally Speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc-based games are maybe $59 on the high end to $39 on the low end. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say “PS3 Games now $99.99.” I don’t think consumers expect software pricing to suddenly double. So, the quick answer is that we want to
make it as affordable as possible, knowing that there is a set consumer expectation for what software has cost for the past twelve years. That’s kind of the best answer I can give you. So, if it becomes a bit higher than $59, don’t ding me, but, again, I don’t expect it to be $100.

No, he’s not exactly going to profit wildly. This is still a great picture.

All I can say here is I’m really glad Microsoft didn’t go the HD-DVD route with their games. Thanks to a Chris for submitting!

Another reason for me to get a Wii instead of PS3.

Certain people I could name gripe at me that I hate the PS3 because I can’t resist reciting the Genji II chant. The PS3 is a game console, that plays video games, my favorite material object ever alongside the Internet, and so I love it. However, I’m not sure I’ll be able to play it easily what with the $599.99 price tag.

Also, I hate Sony.

2 PS3 games = 1 Wii console?

It’s a sad day for a Sony employee.

yeap, I have already decieded a PS3 is not for me. I did not like PS2 and thought the games looked like crap. I never bought it and I am not about to buy the new one ether.

whats the point of a blueray that stores so much? its not like game developers are going to double time, the size and price of games. Im sure every person wants a game that never ends and cant afford. And do we want to wait 8 years for each game to hit the stores… If game developers want to make iarger games, at least xbox 360 will have the HD DVD

That’s a big dissapointment. Don’t get me wrong I’m an Xbox owner and a proud 360 owner and always thought the Xbox was better than the PS2(for me that is), but I’m always open for new things and if the PS3 would be a little more affordable I could (maybe) consider buying it. Sony really screwed itself with that whole Blu-Ray crap. What’s the use if you got that amount of space but the price is outrages?! People are gonna celebrate the wonders of what the 360 can do with a sipmle DVD-9 for a much cheaper value than what Sony can do with their Blu-Ray. So what if you can put a full motion picture in HD into a game, it’s about the gameplay and you could us ingame movies that use up a lot less space. The PS3 is turning out to be a cheap Blu-Ray movie player with wich you can play an expensive game or two. Too bad…

Within the next 5 years - content wise games might go up to a max of 12 gig. These will be produced by the devlopers that can’t compress their games very well (there are some). If this happens, Microsoft could easily have the basic version released on a normal dvd and thenhave the extra content available via live for perhaps a small amount of money (the diff between the game on 360 and PS3) or maybe even free.

Why is it that Sony seem to be trying to alienate even their most loyal of fans.
They release awkward, unfinished technology, with second hand ideas, like a dad trying to breakdance at a disco to get hip with the kids.
It’s just embarrasing.
You’d think, they would at least try and back up their ridiculous pricing structure with some amazing technology, but they don’t. Blu-Ray to the average gamer is no different to HD-DVD, we have been used to 8gig games for a long time so, the leap to 25gig or 50 gig is huge, We will only see the difference in our wallets.
There hasn’t been one title that sony has shown yet that makes me gasp like I did when the 360 came out.
I give 5 years till microsoft buys Sony outright.

All these points I have been making for the past year to no avail, people still slavering about how the PS3 is going to blow the 360 out the water, but the people are slowly coming round with the help of Fony spouting their lies.

The blue ray in the core PS3 is the one that gets me though, Blu Ray drive + No HDMI connection = whats the fu*king point in that!

Blu Ray disks are like buying a warehouse to store you’re 3 pairs of trainers and 2 pairs of shoes instead of just getting a shoe cupboard which would still leave you with room to spare, Blu ray is just empty space that won’t be used except for charging you the consumer more money.

Tbh, whats up with the giant crab postings lately. Did i miss something? Or is it just the amazement with which sony announced some game at e3 and showed a WOW LOOK AT THIS AMAZING GIANT CRAB SCENE!? Which imo wasnt that wow-ish?

The Giant Crab comments are sarcastic. The entire Genji II showing was flat (especially with the guy clearing his throat and going “uhm” the whole time.) Both posts were written by me, and I typically use the phrase in PS3-related posts, especially one that makes the PS3 look bad (and these days, that’s a lot of ‘em) ;)

I bet the games will be even more expensive then 69,99.

I’ll say they will be around 79,99 more lickely if you middle between 59,99 and 100 dollars…

imagine.

A PSZero Premium with 1 extra controller and 2 games…

Say katsjingggggg

830 Euro/dollar!

DAMN

that’s a 360 Premium with 1 extra controller and about 6 to 7 games!!!

OR

A 360 Premium + a Wii (without extra controllers) with the choice to take at least 3 games of your choice… OMG

No imangine this, you buy a PS3 with built in Blu-ray and then HD-DVD becomes the new standard. Who’s f*cked then?
With the 360, if Blu-ray would somehow become the standard, you could just buy an add-on player that can play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. And buy a Wii just for the fun of it :P

lol it’s just funny that sony says stuff like this and the sony fanboys response ends up being “as long as it isn’t 100$” i have seen them say it a few times on like 3 boards… thats just plain out blind dumb devotion lol a more expensive console and more expensive games and an unproven disc format and their still behind it because “it’s a playstation” lol give me a break the graphics will end up being the same down the road anyway ugggh i hate blind fanatisism

Actually, we all know how much Sony likes Japanese devs, and how much Japanese devs like pre-rendered movies. Maybe Sony’s just telling them “Here, use the first 5 gigs for your game, and the other 40 for FMV sequences”.

I can’t wait until Square finally jerks a thumb at the 360 and says “Uh, we can do FMV graphics in-game over there, and for cheaper…”

Man with everything on the ps3 being so expensive, i’d rather have my xbox 360 and than get a wii when it comes out and still not have paid as much for a ps3…anyone think the controllers will be a little over 100? :P

Please no, $50 is quite enough thank you. I’ve only bought wired controllers so far.

Comment by aries on 2006-06-28 20:21:10 | Reply

omg, add ten dollars to that for canada. geez, i wanna ps3 to go along with my 360, but i think i may just upgrade my pc since hopefully developers are going to be porting most of their console exclsuives to pc this time around. or so they say.

If you wanted the blu-ray its worth getting a ps3 because dvd players are going for 999.99 and the console is only 599.99 you save some money other than that who would get it I don’t see any difference between HD and Blu-Ray.

So what’s the target group for Sony:

Gamers

or

People that like to watch video’s?

Let’s say they have to make their loss on each console good with games. If the person that buys the console for the BR player and doesn’t buy games, they’re screwed. Well then they can earn something on movies sold. If they get sold and not get copied. Furthermore, what about streaming HD content? I think it comes in the not too far future.

And well, FOny almost lost 600 million dollars the first 3 months of this year, and they’ll do so every quarter from now and then have to take the initial loss on each console of 300 dollars or more…

Hhmmmm Sony what a strategy. Oh yeah dump in free online gaming also. On what part of the whole strategy are you going to earn some money now???

MS is much, much smarter. Every console is even making profit already. With about 175 loss on the console, but an attach rate of 4.5 games and 3 hardware devices they’re doing really good

Comment by Studley on 2006-06-29 11:49:02 | Reply

But will the PS3 be able to do blu-ray justice? I mean, the PS2 is capable of playing DVDs, but would you choose to watch them on a PS2 rather than a decent home cinema system?

Maybe blu-ray/HD-DVD won’t have that problem because the consoles have all these next-gen connectors, but saying that blu-ray fans will buy a PS3 just because it’s cheap blu-ray doesn’t necessarily make sense.
