A look at RPGs on the 360: there’s a lot
In Xboxland, RPG stands for rocket-propelled grenade much, much more than it does role-playing game. This, of course, is why the original Xbox sunk like a large black-and-green brick in Japan while the Playstation consoles fly. (Unless Sony were to do something like charge $599 for one.) Microsoft’s taken steps to insure this doesn’t happen with their new Xbox, and IGN has an article detailing what we’ll be seeing on the RPG front in the coming months.
Of course, we’ve already had the moneygrubbing Final Fantasy XI and the great Elder Scrolls IV to satisfy our RPG needs, but from the looks of it we’ve got quite a few good ones on their way. Will this sell units in Japan? Let’s hope so. The article goes on to list:
Eastern:
- Enchanted Arms
- Phantasy Star Universe
- Blue Dragon
- Lost Oddessy
Western:
- Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
- Two Worlds
- Mass Effect
- BioShock (FPS RPG? Sounds good)
- Elveon
- Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
- Fable 2
Other, less-known (some possibly Japan-only):
- Zoids Infinity EX Neo
- Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream
- Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom
- Golden Axe
- Project Gray Company
- Dungeon Explorer
- Obsidian RPG Project [untitled]
- Cry On
- Spectral Force 3: Innocent Rage
- Magna Carta 2
- Square Enix / Tri-Ace RPG
- Marvel MMO Project [working title]
- Far East of Eden Ziria - Tales from Distant Jipang
Looks like us otakus (according to some people ;)) who enjoy a good JRPG are set. Heck, if you enjoy RPGs at all, you’re good. Could this be the Xbox 360’s saving grace in Japan? I guess we’ll find out soon enough if the Land of the Rising Sun can get past the behemoth power supply and play some DOAX2…

Great list.
I’m a huge RPG fan and I used my ps2 for rpgs (Squaresoft mostly) and my xbox for everything else.
It’ll great to add some RPGs to my 360 collection.
Enchanted Arms - Pre-ordered
Lost Oddessy - look grea
Phantasy Star Universe - I already have 2 pay MMO’s and have no desire to add a console one.
Blue Dragon - Looked really out there, not sure. Probably get it used
(pt 2)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - I’ve got the first 2. This one is a must have
Mass Effect - It’s Bioware, its a must have. I have all thier games.
BioShock (FPS RPG? Sounds good) - Saw this on G4 E3 and added it to my watch list.
Fable 2 - 1 was a bit light.
Two Worlds - Never heard of it
Elveon - Never heard of it
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - Same as with PSO
I’ve had Blue Dragon on my list since before I got a 360. Can’t wait for it.
Boo! RPG’s smell, but kudos for MS for releasing all types of game.
i cant stand them either, but i want xbox to succeed in japan so we can get katamari damacy. *crosses fingers*
Shit… i want nearly all of those. haha ugh the 360 is a big damn black hole in my wallet!!!
i want to see a quality, turn-based RPG ALA vintage Final Fantasy like numbers 7 and 8. Seriously, the last time i played a game like that was final fantasy 10 and that was when i actually owned a PS2. Xbox360 needs something to that effect…those are the true RPGs that i love. Does anyone know of a game like this coming out for 360?
Too Human is an RPG sorta, and its gonna be a blockbuster. Enchanted arms will be a sleeper hit, and blue dragon has a chance to become the next gen FF7 if they don’t make it too childish. All in all, RPG prospects are excellent for 360.
To answer your question, Enchanted Arms is a turn based RPG like FF except its grid based I think and slightly fast paced.
just to clarify, by turn-based i mean non-real time with multiple controllable characters in battle.
ok thanks newmodel
while i wish the 360 much success in japan, the only one of those games that can save it is blue dragon and lost oddysey. its not going to matter if its a good game to the japanese. they have to know the company and the man behind the game. its the same thing as us and steven spielberg or ron howard. the father of final fantasy is making blue dragon and lost oddysey, so if anything sells 360s there itll be that. as far as the western world goes, i hope all of those show up here, i love rpgs, and we all know the 360 has way way way to many shooters out already or coming out.
just rememebered that a good example is itagaki and q entertainment. i think doa 4 and n3 are the best selling 360 games over there, i think n3 even almost cracked the top ten. so yeah, its more who made the game then if its an amazing game.
Project Gray Company is an EA RPG so I’m sure it will be out in the US. It sort of looks like Oblivion: http://www.ea.com/official/projectgraycompany/
Yeah. I’m pretty much done with oblivion so…bring on KOTOR 3.
Lucas arts didn’t give obsisian statue the thumbs up to making kotor3 after they done KOTOR2,and is now working on Neverwinter nights 2 and after that they gonna co-work with SEGA to make a new rpg.
Bioware who did the first KOTOR is developing a trilogy for 360 (mass effect) and a epic rpg to PC-Dragon age-
So dont expect a KOTOR3 in any coming year,if not lucas arts themself decie to create it,and they are sucky dev…
ABout blue dragon and lost odyssey.
Final Fanatsy creator Sakaguchi did chrono trigger with Akira, who did Dragonballz anime and co.worked on games like Dragon quest serie.
Both work on Blue-Dragon,and Nobuo who done the music in the FF serie is doing it for BD.
Lost odyssey looks also amazing, and its funb to know christina lorenz also gonna do some art for it.
FOr you people who dont know,he did art in FF9 and movies like FF spirits within, matrix, fifth element and day after tomorrow,so when ex-FF creator, producer, director, story writer, programmer Sakaguchi hire him,you know with that Unreal engine 3.0 that they gonna use in LO will lead to awesome design/graphic enviorments.
kotor series > elder scroll series imo. oblivion po’ed me. every five feet i got someone asking me to help them with some bs task. its freaking hard to focus in that game. i dont mind subquest, i love them actually. but dont give them to me every 5 people i talk to. but technically and gameplay wise oblivion is godly. i just hate the quest system. its way to much and is just a buzzkill for me. still a great game though, im not hating on it, just my honest opinion.
two words - Mass Effect!!!!!!!
