Just Cause dev interview
Remember how Hulk’s Ultimate Destruction was one of those sleeper hits that no-one really expected but turned out to be one of the best sandbox game since GTA San Andreas? Well, Sweden based Avalanche Studios might be doing the same thing with their upcoming Just Cause. GTA-esque sandbox gameplay on a tropical island a-la Far Cry, sounds like something to keep your eye on. Thrills Killa sat down with the co-founder and the design director for Avalanche Studios and came up with some interesting new info. The most interesting fact might be that we can expect a demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace ‘very soon’…
What type of gamer is “Just Cause” directed to?
Christofer/Odd- Both the hardcore gamer and the pickup and play type actually. Just about everyone who likes freeroaming fun, huge game worlds, tongue in cheek humor, lots of explosions, a multitude of vehicles, gadgets and oneliners plus a completely out of this world character gallery will like it. You can make the game go on about forever or play it more efficiently. But we advise every player to go up to the highest point of San Esperito and enjoy the sunset at least once. it’s mind-blowing beautiful.
Just Cause is set for a worldwide release by the end of September on Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2 and PC.

Saints Row…, Crackdown…..this! what am i going to do?
Is this the one that everyone keeps complaining about the graphics for? I don’t think it looks *that* bad, really.
What?! It looks like DRIV3R, for PS2.
I dunno. I think it looks decent enough IF it turns out to be a gigantic game, because I’m happy to accept a little bit of toning down of graphics in order to fit much more gameplay in there.
However, if it turns out to be bascially a straight copy (graphics and all) of the PS2 version, THEN I’ll be pissed off. Especially because it’ll probably cost about ÂŁ20 more to buy.
You guys are spoiled

You cannot expect ‘Gears of War’ graphics on a big sandbox game. That’s not doable. Not even on the *cough*oh so powerfull*cough* Paystation3
IMHO it looks good enough.
But we should expect every game with anti aliasing 2 times or 4 times!
3 words.. Project Gotham Racing
Yeah both FSAA and decent texture filtering should be mandatory. And more 60FPS games, please.
“10- Will “Just Cause” have Online Multiplayer or Co-op?
Christofer/Odd- Nope. It’s a one-person game. An experience like Just Cause can not be shared, and neither should it. Go ahead, treat yourself to some solitude.”
Lol, gotta love those PR guys :D. “No we didn’t do multiplayer, because you shouldn’t share the experience! Bad interviewer, thinking you should share a free roaming experience, treat yourself to some soltitude!”
I’m pleased! Too many single-player portions of games are being overlooked (see Chrome Hounds for a good example) in order to focus on multiplayer.
There aren’t all that many good, playable single-player games out there for the 360 yet, so this is pleasing.
Oblivion, Tomb Raider, Condemded.
There is a couple for you.
And chromehounds more than makes up for it with the multiplayer anyway (when the servers are working, and my statement is based on having a shot on the Jap servers as I got a hold of the game a couple of days before release)
I have Oblivion, and loved it - aside from the Plains Of Oblivion, which are so samey that they eventually put me off the game (after Aid For Brouma - you know, 9 of the things in a row. Blah!) and I’ve not played it since. I’ll go back to it eventually though.
Tomb Raider has never really appealed to me - running through screen after screen to press a switch somewhere and then running back to the door is samey and dull.
Condemned is one I’ve kept meaning to pick up, but I’m going to wait til the price drops a bit.
But that’s about the only three ’solid’ single player games on the 360 at present - at least until NNN appears, and - hopefully - enChanT ARMs (or whatever combination of upper and lower case letters they’ve decided on this week).
Thing is, I just don’t really have the time to devote to multiplayer online gaming, seeing as I work odd hours and my friends are never really online at the same time as me. Playing against strangers on XBL is very hit and miss due to the amount of complete nuggets out there, alas.
See, that’s the thing - I’m sure Chromehounds DOES make up for it with the multiplayer - but multiplayer should NEVER be really good *to the detriment of the single player game* - and really, being honest, you have to admit that CH’s single-player mode is fairly lacklustre at best.
I just hope they fix the server problem and don’t leave us with another COD2 style farce.
My experiance with Live has been okay, but maybe thats because I am quite outspoken that I now have a number of sound people to play with that I have never met, but they are all as obnoxious and rude as me when someone tries to get lippy so we all get on well slagging each other off.
I do agree, but the single player campaign almost seems like training for going online rather than a standalone game, my opinion on the 360 is that the multiplayer experience comes first which isn’t a bad thing as long as that is what you expect, if you didn’t have a live subscription I wouldn’t even recommend getting a 360, which is what I have told my mate who has a 360 and is not live, whats the point really eh?
@Number13: Exactly! I said it before ; I rather have a good and polished singplayer than a rushed singleplayer + crappy last minute deathmatch mode.
Sure, but their argument wasn’t that the singelplayer was going to be rushed it was that you shouldn’t share the experience of Just Cause! That’s what I found so funny.
Sure I’d rather have a good solid single player game than a rushed game, I’m not stupid :p
what a horrible interview
no insight into the game whatsover
what about important questions like:
“will the environment be destructable”
“how are you taking advantage of the 360’s nex-gen graphics capability”
“are you planning downloadable content (add-on packs and the like)”
“how do you respond to criticism that hte game is another gta clone”
instead we get a bunch of crap telling us to buy the game bc it has “one liners”
eidos FTL
how do you hook on to cars
