Does Denzel have a Halo?!
IGN today reported that entertainment website DarkHorizons.com have speculated that non-other than Denzel Washington could be set to step into the role of Master Chief in the much-talked-about Halo movie… Don’t bother re-reading that, you read it right the first time… Stop laughing and let me take on a wild tour through Rumoursville…
Thats right, according to Dark Horizons, the Oscar winner probably most famous for his role in ‘Training Day’, could be the man to step into the big green suit to battle the alien menace that is the Covenant. According to the article, Peter Jackson and Denzel Washington have met to discuss working on a project together, as IGN wrote:
”July 11, 2006 - According to DarkHorizons.com, Oscar winner Denzel Washington is rumoured to be up for the role of “Master Chief” in Fox/Universal’s film version of the Microsoft/Bungie videogame sensation Halo.
The site did not cite a source for the rumour, which comes on the heels of the news reported earlier this month by the Associated Press that Washington had met with filmmaker Peter Jackson in New Zealand to discuss working together.Jackson is exec producing Halo. The AP claimed that Washington would direct an unspecified project that Jackson’s Weta special effects house would do the visual effects for.
Halo was scripted by Alex Garland. There is no director set yet for the project, although Guillermo Del Toro has been rumoured for the job. “
Unfortunately, I was unable to provide any better quotes as the Dark Horizons article that IGN have based it on appears to have disapeared. From my point of view, I feel must stress that from the above, Jackson and Washington’s meeting could have been about any role, and not necessarily the Halo movie… and that’s if they even met up. Its pure speculation, but sometimes you just can’t beat it!

You know Denzel would make a great MC, but it seems to me maybe this rumor has gotten the facts confused and Denzel is set for the role of Sarge. He would make a perfect Sarge…but I woulnd’t mind him at all as MC. He fits the role of chief better I think, but he is a black man, and Sarge is black and plays a big role in halo, so I dunno. I don’t think we need to worry about the direction Peter Jackson is going with halo…

I guess no one understood my point regarding Steve Downes.
My point is that I don’t believe that the MC should remove his helmet during the movie. Having a different voice play the MC will take something away from the feel of the movie. There’s no reason that Steve Downes couldn’t be voice by someone other than the person in the costume (Darth Vader comes to mind).
Personally I’d like to see a Halo movie done completely with CGI, like the Final Fantasy movie.
The will have a pretty hard time getting James Earl Jones to voice the part.

I knew the Halo movie was going to end up ShiZ like all the other movies based on a video game. Demzel is a HACK of an actor, im not sure if i can see that old man in full body armor running and jumping around. He wouldnt even make good ‘Sarge’ they would need someone with more attitude

Giving this role to any well-known actor might be the equivalent to bringing a knife to a gunfight. I know I wouldn’t want to see some academy award winning actor play Master Chief. In my eyes, whoever plays him should just be a person in a suit. I don’t ever want to see a face. Keep it like V from “V for Vendetta.” Keep that mask on and don’t ruin it for the many fans who rather leave the mystery to the character.
Think of it this way…how many people were disappointed to see Darth Vader’s face when he was finally unmasked? I already had an idea in my head of what I though he would look like and was quite disappointed when they finally revealed his old, scarred face. =(
