Top 10 reasons this chick’s a Sony fanboy

Paid to be Hated over at AssociatedContent compiled a top 10 list of why you shouldn’t buy an Xbox 360. Sure, the system has a few drawbacks - if you got yours early, it’s prone to exploding - but come on, we don’t have to make stuff up like she did.

1. The cost. Why anyone would pay as much as 1000 dollars for a video game system is beyond me.

1 Xbox 360, $399
1 extra wireless controller, $49
2 games, $119
1-year Live subscription, $49
1600 Microsoft Points (for arcade games), $19
The whole shebang: $639

Which certainly isn’t cheap, but when you consider the PS3 is $600 for just the system, it looks a lot nicer.

2. The release of the new Nintendo and the new Playstation. Why buy a system when two other new ones are coming out and you could want one of those ones? You should always wait to see what system you want before spending the amount of money they want for an Xbox 360. Not to mention we all know the Playstation 3 is going to blow them both out of the water.

I had to copy and paste this whole entry because it’s just so wrong. First of all: the Wii and the Xbox 360 were made for each other. One because you want an updated, beautiful version of that game you liked last year with amazing online capabilities and the other because you want something original that’s fun to play. (Not saying the Xbox 360 doesn’t have anything original, but the Wii’s taking originality a whole step further.)

And the PS3 isn’t going to blow anything out of the water, except maybe your wallet.

3. The system is designed to maximize HD qualities and if you don’t have an HD television it’s not much different than the previous Xbox.

Wrong. I play on a standard definition television and games like Lost Planet and Project Gotham 3 are still beautiful.

4. Microsoft’s prying eyes are everywhere. When you use the internet connection to do any of the thousands of useless things offered on the Xbox 360 live it tracks your stats, achievements, what you’re playing, how long you’re playing it, with whom you’re playing, if you’re buying or renting games, even what time you started playing it. I don’t know about you but I think Microsoft collects too much information already, and the idea that they are tracking me like a lab rat gives me the willies.

This is a matter of personal taste. I don’t mind having a record of everything I do on that 360, because it doesn’t really let you do much you wouldn’t want people seeing. (Until Barbie Horse Adventures 2 comes out, anyway.) One could say that you can watch certain DVDs on it, that you wouldn’t want people to know you’ve watched, but it still doesn’t record the name of the DVD. All it says is that you are watching a movie.

5. The DVD player the Xbox 360 boasts doesn’t really boast anything except mediocre-ness. You would expect from such an expensive system that’s main bragging rights come from amazing graphics to have spent more time and money on the DVD player. It doesn’t compare to the video game graphics; you’re better off with your current model of DVD player.

Your Gilligan’s Island set is not going to go widescreen 1080p just because you put it into an Xbox 360. Ever.

6. The Xbox 360 overheats easily. The amount of heat the Xbox 360 output is astonishing. The fans are noisy and obviously can’t handle the demand of the system. Overheating obviously leads to your Xbox dying and your going through the hassle of getting it fixed (hope you bought that warranty). You can try and avoid this problem (notice I said try) by making sure its open on all sides for ventilation and turning it off frequently, but good luck.

I wouldn’t say it overheats easily. I have mine fairly well ventilated, but it got really hot at times. Even the ventilation wouldn’t save it from the Red Lights of Doom when they decided to visit, so it’s just an early adopter problem. I’m fairly sure it’s been fixed by now.

Also, the fans aren’t that loud.

7. The game titles are very limited compared to other systems. Unless you like fighting, sports, or racing, there isn’t much out there for you. There are especially few titles for children. I definitely wouldn’t consider it a family friendly system (unless you family is compromised of nothing except men in their 20’s)

Three words: Viva Fricking Pinata.

Odd that “shooters” aren’t mentioned, considering there are a mere two fighting games (DOA4 and Street Fighter) and quite a few shooters (and more on the way). And if you want something for kids and women, what about Zuma and Bejeweled?

8. In order to get all the features you have to spend more money on a hard drive or buy the more expensive version of the Xbox 360. Most people are confused with the multiple packages for sale and who wouldn’t be? Who wants to spend 300 dollars on a system, another 100 dollars on games, and an unprecedented amount on accessories, to take it home and find out it stinks without the hard drive?

No self-respecting person makes a decision like that without asking people in the know or using the Internet. If you do either, you will be told that you need a hard drive. Plus, your beloved PS3 is going to do the same exact thing. Except it’ll be more expensive.

9. The power brick is larger than an Xbox game package and not that much smaller than the console itself. It is gigantic and weighs in at a hefty 6 pounds. Why should that matter you ask? Well for starters its bulky, requiring more room for your other wires. Secondly, that’s 6 pounds plus gravity pulling on the back of your system (another reason for a glitch, though probably more long term). Thirdly, it gets incredibly hot as well and with it being so large it’s going to touch all of your other cords and wires and heat them up as well.

Yes, yes. The power brick is large. We discussed this back in November. Hide it behind your entertainment center, television, whatever. Its certainly not a good reason to avoid purchasing a game system.

10. Customer support is a joke. You would think with all the complaints of glitches and dying machines (especially with overheating) that Microsoft would put some warning labels on the box or in the manuals on how to avoid said problems. At the least they could offer some upgrades to the systems glitches but when all is said and done it is left to be written, blogged, and complained about with no real solution.

I’ve had to call Microsoft customer service three times. The first time, I had a problem with my profile and had to make a new one. It was a long call, and I was on hold for a long time, and the guy had an accent, but he was extremely helpful. The second time, I couldn’t download content for Star Wars Battlefront II and the people were still helpful (some more than others as I had multiple people), but I decided a few maps and characters weren’t worth the mind-melting technobabble. The third and final time, a little less than two weeks ago, my Xbox died and I got the guy who pinks up the phone when it goes green green and says “Yellow?”. He tried to help, but I had quite a few moments where I had a lot of trouble understanding him. Their customer service (if you use phone; online chat and e-mail were useless when I had problems with Halo splitscreen) is really not so bad, and I certainly wouldn’t call it a joke. They just seriously need to hire people without accents.

So while our favorite concave white box has its fair share of problems - prone to Super Hardware Failure, you have to hook it into Live to get the full experience - most of this “top 10 list” was lies and fabrication. And before you guys use this as an excuse to bash girl gamers and I know some of you will this isn’t respresentative of the whole market. I know two women who can beat me like a drum at COD2, and one’s even a mom. This girl just has a megaphone.

Here’s the full list, and here’s a list on the PS3 that may or not be as screwy.

I’m not sure Curry had a rant in mind when he showed me the Joystiq article, but when I do something, I do it all the way, unless I don’t want to ;)

Is the Kaz dressed as a woman?
If I ever see this woman, I will slap her so many times, until she learns some things.

but beating women is wrong

It’s not beating, just “enforced learning.”

Trig fella whoa I’m building a real bad mental impression of you, were you beaten much as a baby? ¬_¬

I still get beaten nowadays, and I’m 16…

wow. the author might be wrong in exaggerating the xbox’s faults, but i find the deep rooted misogyny on this thread completely saddening. no wonder there are less women gamers– the gaming community is hostile to them. beating women is funny? and surprise: no one in this thread batted an eyelash. business as usual.

It’s not funny to beat women. But for the one that wrote this article we make an exception

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-08-21 13:17:20 | Reply

Whats the reaction of people in this site got to do with females in general and gaming?

Beating women ain’t funny, talking about a hypothetical situation in which a woman is beat can be funny if delivered in the right way. Just like anything can be laughed at and should be laughed at if delivered correctly, it’s not anyone elses fault if someone can’t separate reality from fiction.

That girl is a psycho!

Comment by Bob on 2006-08-18 19:19:31 | Reply

I get the idea that who ever wrote that was jealous. Wait till they find out the problems with the PS3 and its shoddy blu-ray disc errors, LOL ;)All hell will break lose!

I laughed for 10 minutes straight as I went through that list ;) The PS3 counterpart is rather more realistic actually. At least the writer actually did some research before writing, unlike this chick.

thats sad, and the reason why people who cant think for themselves or except change keep the blahstation alive. love ps1, like ps2, disappointed so far in whats being shown on the ps3. and like i didnt notice her stating any examples for mind melting titles on the ps3 that arent sequels anways. WHAT A TOOL!!!

Does this chick know that sony decided to go with an external power supply also? (”Another brick by the wall”)

I can’t believe she said MS customer service is a joke. When my controller became faulty, all I had to do was make one phone call and *poof* a day later, a replacement came with a prepaid box to send the old one back. Back when I had a PS2, I called because I had some problems with the DVD drive, and they expected me to pay them to get it fixed. In my experience, MS customer service is among the best I’ve ever dealt with.

Comment by NavyStorm PR on 2006-08-18 22:16:30 | Reply

LOL!!!!And Sony has such a good customer service

LOL exactly

1. Sony has a power brick as well.
2. No news on sony over heating… but 1 did freeze up at e3 (that was caught on film)
3. Viva Pinta for the kiddies and arcade classics.

OH MY FU*KING GOD

“why pay beyond 1000$ for a gaming system” last i checked 600$ is ALOT closer to 1000 than 399 LOL

Well I have to say I want a ps3 but not right away. Ill get the wii for this year. But they are comparable price for the features offered. P
PS3 600
60gb free live wireless one controller bd
xbox 399 20gb
xboxlive 49
wireless 99
hddvd 150?
ps3 600
xbox360 697
Keep in mind ive already spent over 1k on my 3 month old xbox360

Comment by dybot on 2006-08-18 23:04:15 | Reply

Yeah because you would never purchase additional controller for the PS3 or purchase games online via Sony’s version of Live Arcade.

Comment by aries on 2006-08-18 23:30:39 | Reply

yeah that whole article is ripped straight out of the microsoft troll base. everything there is exaggerated tenfold and it is happening more and more with each bit of success the 360 has. microsoft claims now they will ship 13 to 15 million units possibly by the time the ps3 is readily available next spring/early summer. thats almost as many units and the xbox sold altogether. people are just afraid of change. like when people said sega couldnt top nintendo. well…..it happened. to bad sega didnt give “moore” of an effort with the dreamcast. oops typo lol

i dont get it, why dont people look at stuff with an open mind? it will rich up ur life..
especially step 4 is funny. You dont wanna know how many PC gamers use XFire and that piece of software is maybe even worse then the xbox live thingy. The reasons i loved BF2 (on pc) was partly because i LOVE to see how much i played, what i have acchieved, whats my k/d ratio etc.
fifth point was about the media player (HD DVD etc).. i dont want that! i got my PC hooked up on my tv and its perfect.. i dont ever want to use a stand alone unit to watch movies.

6. the overheating ;) maybe i just got brilliant airflow in my house, but when it was boiling hot a month ago, my xbox never failed on me, and didnt i see a photo not to long ago of the PS3 that significantly grew in size because they had heat problems so they had to put even bigger heatsinks on it. I personally think this is quite a big problem for the new ps3, it might be really high end but i think that will be the black mean overheating macine :).

8. here its kinda right. in my humble opinion it WAS a bad idea putting the xbox 360 CORE pack on the market. I dont know anyone that bought a xbox 360 core package, and i know a lotta people that have a xbox360.

9. the size of the PSU.. dont even try to get that old cow out of the water. You really should be called a retard if you dont buy a console because of the size of the PSU LOL! The same was for the first xbox. As a reason people said the xbox sucked was because it was too big!??! wtf, i dont care how big it is, if its good its good.

About customer support i dunno, but i remember getting 2 free games on my original xbox because i bought the xbox for full price and the price was dropped right after it. I also got a new power adapter for my original xbox within a week after they said everyone could get one..

Ofcourse its not the best, but have you tried calling Sony customer support \o> .. i can tell u i did :)

STFU, bitch.

At least the 360 powersupply can go behind your entertainment center. The PS3 is bigger than the 360 and *two* powersupplies.

“7. The game titles are very limited compared to other systems. Unless you like fighting, sports, or racing, there isn’t much out there for you. There are especially few titles for children. LOL! With over well over 300 announced retail ‘360 games, some 40-odd titles in stores, 30-ish arcade titles, and over 80 arcade titles in development? Right, whatever you say.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

What makes me laugh is those complaining about heat. Want heat? My bedroom hit 44c in the uk july heatwave and upon returning from work, there I am playing Prey comfortably away. My ‘brick’ sits ontop of my 8 way plug adapter which is rammed full of plugs/warm adapters - and yet I’ve not had a single problem at all.

Ask yourself this, do you REALLY need a sub £400 blueray player with a console slapped ontop? Or would you rather have it optional ala the MS HD-DVD fat drive? I know what I’d rather have.

Reason I went with the 360? MS actually listen to their feedback from their customers (e.g our last dash update), yet Sony shy away at almost every question that gets thrown at them regarding their console. The only thing they’re good at is sprouting big numbers. Anyone remember the PS2’s ‘Toy Story 2 visuals’ quote? :)

Comment by gee on 2006-08-19 17:08:43 | Reply

the lady never said the ps3 didnt have problems, her list wasnt why the ps3 is better, it was a list of the xbox problems, period. You all need to get your gates sucking heads out of your asses. You all boast about how good your xboxes are, even though the writer himself said his xbox failed.

What do you have against people with accents? Doug is no better than the chick he is trying to burn. It’s funny that most posts are kissing his butt LOL

I love people with accents. When I can understand them. If I’m on the phone - which already has less-than-desirable audio quality - and I can’t understand what the person on the other end is saying, we have a problem.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-08-21 13:22:52 | Reply

I have Doug’s back on this one.

I have to deal with people with accents on a daily basis, good for them they have learned a second language but that doesn’t make my job any eaiser when they cannot communicate to the standard needed to do their job effectively and so hampering my ability to do mine.

Fair enough they can ask where the library is, whats the time, can I have the bill please but none of this means they can carry out the tasks they are paid to and so should not be working in the role.

Comment by devofoms on 2006-08-19 17:27:13 | Reply

You con’t find too many people offshore without accents and that is where tech suport is done these days. The amazing thing is how well they speak english considering its a second language for most of them.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-08-21 13:26:06 | Reply

You can when the company that employs is intelligent enough to realise that if someone is working in a customer facing role then they should hire people that can communicate on an even level with the customer base.

As crazy as it sounds it does happen, i work for a company that bases its call centres in the places that the business is sold. There are offices in China with Chinese call centres, UK with British call centres, Canada with Canadian call centres. The list goes on and it works.

Oh, so women only play Bejeweled, huh? Y’know, that’s why you don’t hear from more girl gamers… because you belittle and marginalize them.

And before you guys use this as an excuse to bash girl gamers and I know some of you will this isn’t respresentative of the whole market. I know two women who can beat me like a drum at COD2, and one’s even a mom. This girl just has a megaphone.

Also, from what I am to understand, stuff like Bejewled, Zuma, and what you find on the DS like that brain training is much more popular with the ladies, normally. There are girls who like the shooters and the sports titles (I have played a few women in PGR) but unfortunately there aren’t many.

Unless there are. Then please prove me wrong.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-08-21 13:27:12 | Reply

COD2, yep. Good times with women to be had on that game.

The rant is just phony hype to convince people that they WANT to spend $1000 on a PS3. Everyone knows its not worth it. So they take some cheap shots by lying about the 360. I have a 360 which has never given me a single problem and works right out of the box.

Sony’s real competitor is the Wii. Because everyone I know is talking about the Wii and no one has even mentioned the PS3.

Imagine the scenario at GameStop. There are three consoles on display. The Wii will amaze everyone not to mention its mini price tag.

The 360 and the PS3 are just there, with great upgraded graphics for conventional gamers, only the PS3 is close to $1000. And the PS3 games are each ~ $80…

The PS3 is going to tank. Its too expensive, overhyped by Sony, and who cares about blu-ray. That’s all you had to say.

Have you considered joining our forums?

I’ve a thing for XBOX 360. I don’t want to wait for PS3 to come out. There are lots of games for Xbox. Moreover, with the release of the developer packs for making games, Xbox is very appealing. PS3 will have games but few of those games will exploit all the cores of the RISC cell processor. Moreover, XBOX + PC beats PS3 on the appealing level. XBOX is already far ahead. XBOX is extensible. Ms. did a nice box for this console unlike PC OS Vista. PS3 is not meant for the masses right now.

You know guys, i dont like microsoft il say it now. I will be getting a playstation 3 and i wont be touching an xbox360. im all for open critisism but when you argue back with incorrect “facts” i just had to post my annoyance.

1 Xbox 360, $399
1 extra wireless controller, $49
2 games, $119
1-year Live subscription, $49
1600 Microsoft Points (for arcade games), $19
The whole shebang: $639

Ok, lets not forget that the ps3 will have a 60gb hdd compared to a 20gb hdd and it wont have a high definition dvd player. so…lets just say that its going to cost $100 for a 60gb hdd and $100 for an hddvd drive addon…(i think it will be nearer $200 but lets just say $100 in this example)

thats $639 + $200 = $839. ok now lets take away those 2 games…at $119.

$839 - $119 = $720.

now lets take away those microsoft points at $19.

$720 - $19 = $701

and while we are here lets take away that extra wireless controller.

$701 - $49 = $652

Now lets just take off the xbox live subscription at $49

$652 - $49 = $603

Omg would you look at that…the 360 is more expensive with no online subscription. and might i add there is no HDMI port on the xbox 360.

So next time you try to act like you know what your on about…do that maths first. ;)

Maybe you should do your maths again, as that little quiz you did there isn’t $603, but actually $599. Not much difference, please do check, the next time you act like you know your maths…do it properly ;)

One tiny winy detail you’re missing though.

You don’t know what the standard of next gen drives will be. For PS3 you have no choice. If the standard will be BR they you’re lucky. But what if BR will not be the standard? Well damn. Then you paid a lot of money for well urm nothing!

360 at least has the choice. If HD-DVD won’t be the standard, in the future it’s possible to sell BR add-on if wanted.

Furthermore, why in heavens sake should the 60 GB HDD be accounted to the 360’s price? It’s not nescessary to have a 60 GB HDD. So I guess the PS stays a hell of an expensive console AND with the possibility to pay for a non standard drive.

That sucks

Ok, try as i did. i couldnt get the answer of $599.

Ok let me spell this out and lets see whos right.

2 games, $119

ok now 639 + 200 is 839.
839 - 19 is 820
820 - 49 is 771
771 - 119 is 652
652 - 49 is 603

Now please tell me how you worked out that it costs 599???

Onto the next comment.

Ok now someone obviously doesnt have a clue about bluray and hddvd.

The playstation 3 games will be on a bluray format so the console wont be useless at all you just wont be able to watch BLURAY movies.

And as i said, can you honestly tell me that you think the hddvd drive for the 360 will cost $100. i think it will cost $200 at least. But you guys are completely missing the point. im trying to show you why the playstation 3 is suddenly a good deal.

Keep it coming guys :)

(Ok, Xboxic admins, edit all these comments as much as you need, bu he said keep it coming.)

Lets start from the beggining. I’ll keep a running tally (the proper answers) next to it.

1 Xbox 360, $399
1 extra wireless controller, $49 ($448)
2 games, $119 ($567)
1-year Live subscription, $49 ($616)
1600 Microsoft Points (for arcade games), $19 ($635)
The whole shebang: $639 ($635)

ok now 639 + 200 is 839. ($835)
839 - 19 is 820 ($816)
820 - 49 is 771 ($767)
771 - 119 is 652 ($648)
652 - 49 is 603 ($599…)

Ok, thats fair enough. So the guy who started the topic in the first place got the maths wrong not me. And neither did you while im here. If he got the right total then yeah its $599. But the point im trying to make is the playstation 3 doesnt seem so expensive when you give the 360 matching specs. Wether it will turn out better or worse we will have to wait.

But the point you are missing though is that you have a choice to bring the 360 up to matching specs if you choose to and it will have a comparable price. What if you don’t want a second control pad, Wi-Fi, HD 60Gig HD which you would struggle to fill with anything meaningful and Blu-Ray which has not even established itself as the format to go with.

You’re totally missing the point, nobody stis around and does their sums before buying a console. People buy them based on cachet value of the system (how “cool” is it to have one) and the quality of the games. Right now, Xbox360 is winning hands down because frankly, its on the market. Microsoft suggest they’ll sell 15 million units before PS3 hits the market.

Sony is also releasing the PS3 at the same time as the Wii, which will split the market a bit for them initially. A good Mario title and Sony would be in trouble because nobody can afford to buy both originally. If the PS3 doesn’t live up to the hype initially, the cachet value wears off and the future looks bleak. Meanwhile, Microsoft still have 15 million units in the bank.

On the issue of BR versus HD-DVD, one thing you’re totally missing the point on is that BR is still not avaialble and its success is by no means ensured as a platform. Similar to the argument that Sony will offer online gaming for free where as Microsoft charge for it - well, Xbox Live is out there in the market, is quite successful and is GOOD. Right now, online play for the PS3 is vapourware - free doesn’t equate to good.

Microsoft are heading down an interesting path with the Xbox and PC. By moving to a more unified gaming development platform they stand to leverage the much wider PC gaming market better for the Xbox and more importantly, they diminish the cost of development for the development shops if they standardise on the Xbox/PC platform. Its a compelling business model because of the cost of multi-platform development and then licensing fees.

I think in line with the above comment, one thing that is driving up the cost of the PS3 is the Cell processor. Development of multi-threaded games to take advantage of multi-cores is a tough road. If you were going to do that kind of development, you’d ask yourself a question, do I want to write for the single Sony platform or do I want to write my multi-core capable games for a Microsoft platform that opens up both the PC and Xbox and abstracts me from the compilation nightmare. Bear in mind, Intel will ship more multi-core processors this year than anyone else in the PC market so if you were doing multi-core targetted development, which platform would you aim for?

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft take the step of getting out of the hardware for the Xbox and just license the platform. So we could see a Dell Xbox360 at a fraction of the cost.

Finally, I think right now, with all of the problems Sony are having with overheating batteries in Dell, HP and other machines, nobody in their right mind would be spruiking the advanced power management capabilities and low running temperatures of any Sony product.

Take a look at this link

Why arnt their hddvd drives on there?
http://www.blu-ray.com/players/

And you said the technology isnt here yet???

Yeah, I’m afraid Blu-Ray is available, and the movies I’ve seen available on BR, I’d rather see in super hi-def than the ones available on HD-DVD. Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich or Morgan Freeman? Hmm…

;)

The one reason why XBOX 360 is better than PS3……. XBOX 360 has Halo 3, and Gears Of War.
