Review: Texas Hold ‘Em

Thank god I got this game for free, otherwise I would’ve never bought it. You know, us Dutch people can’t resist anything free and while I was in Leipzig attending the Games Convention 2006 I had to call home to let someone else download it for me. Probably a $10 phone call, but it’s the thought that counts.

I’d like to start off by saying I haven’t played Poker in my life, ever. Not even strip poker, and can you imagine me reviewing this game without knowing jack shit about it? Well, the rules ain’t so tough, at least that’s what they want you to believe. When entering the help mode, the game gets explained in about 10 screens, which seems fair enough doesn’t it? While reading through all the rules I said to myself, ‘you should write down all these card combination cause you’ll forget em’, so I didn’t.

To not make a complete fool out of myself I obviously opened up the singleplayer menu where you’re presented with three options. Standard game, Tournament and Scenario. Standard game is just unlimited play where you can set the Buy-in’ amount and some other stuff. When playing with the lowest amount you can win money, and you can’t lose any! Vegas here I come! Tournament is just like it sounds, just play until everybody’s eliminated. Scenario mode is a little different. You can choose from 7 different scenarios each offering a different set-up but your goal is to eliminate the other players or ending up with the biggest wad of cash.

Playing this game versus other players is what really makes Poker fun. But Microsoft did a bad job by not implementing Xbox Live Vision. In Uno it’s just a fun gimmick, but this is Poker, where you’ll have to put up your Christopher Reeve face to make other people believe you have cards that you actually don’t have. But making remarks to other people is fun as well: “you smell!”.

Graphics wise the game isn’t really that special, but hey, it’s a frikkin’ card game. I was actually surprised they built a 3D-engine for it, which is only used when zooming around a bit on the table. The sounds are a different story. While the sound effects are quite all right, the music is hellish. The same loop playing over and over again, without exaggerating it’s a 15 second loop or something, so the lonely guitarist in the corner was quickly put out of business.

I like the game, for a first time poker experience it’s quite fun, although I can imagine people who’ve played a million different varieties of the game find it a little underwhelming. The only thing I dislike is the price, 800 points for a game that was free for 48 hours is just wrong. What if you’re separated from your Xbox 360 by force or something like that? If you really like Uno, you’ll like this as well probably.

Final Score: 7 out of 10 - Above Average (how do we rank games?)

Yeah it’s OK. There’s a painful amount of delay between hands though - forcing everyone to press A at the completion of each hands, someone always forgets and then there’s a 10-second wait.

And the AI is far from perfect, but it’s the best I’ve seen in a poker game to date - and all this for a free game. Mind you it’s still more intelligent than most of the human opponents I’ve played so far ;)

I’d play it more if I could turn off or shorten the delays indeed.

I don’t have any problems with it since I’ve turned of the animations.

Tried that but didn’t change the delays between turns…

Think about it though, the delay’s are the same as people re-collecting the cards. A real game of Poker lasts a lot longer.

it is what it is, a free poker game, no fancy graffix, no super sounds, just a nice free game for the good ol’ harddrive. i dont know, the delay does suck, maybe they can hook us up w. a patch.

One recommendation…if you’re are playing in multiplayer make sure you leave the table before shutting down the console. I lost 50,000 points because of this and then went on a losing bender cause I was pissed.-600,000 in arouns 20 hands lol. oh well time to make it up.

i have to agree about the sounds effects/music, i think i lasted about 15 mintues before i turned them both off in the menu. They only sound effect i liked was the “all in” effect. Mainly cause people seam to feel the urge to make the noise at the same time themselves

I was seperated by force- the force of 3 red lights :(

i had no tv for two days and now im fucked :) im not gonna pay 800 for it!

they should have made the game free fir the first download, then when your bank roll depleted, in order to continue playing you had to “purchase” more chips from MS! The first consumble game!

Texas Hold ‘em killed my XBox 360[1]! I just packed my 360 up into its cardboard coffin for the trip to the repair center. I wont have it for about 3 weeks.

[1]I think it was a coincidence.

Well surely that must kill all rumors that 360s die of being overstressed :D

I’m sure I have played you, but can’t be sure as this game does provide you with too much time to roll your smokes so after the first couple of hours I am usually cabbaged anyway.

Little correction.. Texas Hold’Em will use Xbox Live Vision in the near future, as in ‘When it comes out..’.

Well lets see if you can guess my cards from the close up shot of my rusty sheriffs badge.

I really like this game and have been amazed at how much I’ve played it. I’ve had a few problems with multi-player though with my 360 freezing up a couple of times.

Has anyone else noticed that the 4 of Diamonds actually has 5 Diamonds displayed on the card?

I can confirm it is treated as a four as I found out last night with my pocket 5’s against pocket 4’s in a half million pot. D’oh!

Best social Multiplayer game going.

I agree.

I have a £290 premium 360, two control pads, £500 worth of full price titles, and for the past week I have spent every gaming moment sitting at a table playing poker (for monopoly money) which I got for free amusing myself between hands by moving my view of the table up and down.

And I can’t get enough.

The different characters we have met on this game has been great, some new folks on the friends list and a lot of new people on the wind up list (because it makes me happy to upset others).
