Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 hits the net

Like streaming things over from your PC to your 360? Tired of not being able to stream video over as you can’t get Windows Vista Beta or just generally think Vista sucks? Well you are in luck as Microsoft have released Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 which should allow any 360 to play video straight from your PC’s hard drive.

Windows Media Player is Microsoft’s first party media playing program and usually comes with Windows and is free to download, much like MSN and other Microsoft media services. Unfortunately it seems at the moment that no nobody has gotten video streamed to a 360 just yet, but it is rumoured that this is a feature that will be fully installed in the upcoming autumn Xbox Live update. We all certainly hope this is true because otherwise we will all be a bit disappointed, as this is a feature the 360 sorely lacks compared to other DMR devices.

We will keep you updated with this story, but Microsoft have a good track record when listening to customers and using their ideas, so we all hope for the best with this.

Thanks to frontieruk for this news.

Beta 2 has been out for a while… AND…video streaming still doesn’t actually work.

If the video is really streaming from media player then hopefully they’ll make it transcode all videos they arnt compatable, not the best solution for slower PC’s but it would be a start

I would like them to stay away for Transcoding PERIOD. You can already do this now for one, but yes you need MCE 2005 installed. Transcoding lacks alot including it uses too much resouces and the video is not the same as source. I do not understand MS why cant you just give us direct streaming from our shares. They need to hire the guy’s working on XBMC and call it a day.

I agree but i’d rather have transcoding than nothing.

The video upgrade won’t be possible untillater this year when the dashboard gets upgraded… remember 2 upgrades a year is the bottom line. Probably sometime around the ps3 launch and the hddvd release :)

They probably do it this way because then you still need a copy of windows… who would still need windows if you could play divx/xvid directly on the 360 from a samba share?
