First screens for upcoming XBLA board games

During the Leipzig Games Convention 2006 Microsoft announced they were working on XBLA versions of some of the most famous board games of the last decade. And if you are as psyched as I am over the Settlers of Catan making their HD debut somewhere in the near future, look inside for the first screenshots that capture the game’s ideas and concepts excellently.

GamesAreFun.com got hold of the first screenshots, of which mainly Catan looks surprisingly good and playable. The other 2 games, Carcassonne and Alhambra, are less well known and also slightly less good looking on the screenshots, but for the hardcore players this shouldn’t matter too much. Did I say hardcore? Yes, for those of our readers thinking board games are for children, strategy games like these three are played in professional tournaments for real prize money all the time. Don’t expect this to be comparable to a mindless round of UNO alright?

No release dates have been announced for any of the three games.

Settlers of Catan

Carcassonne

Alhambra

Catan is a really good board game. I’ve never heard of the other two. Will definately buy catan. Advise you all to give it a try.

I was just in a “game shop” and advised to buy both Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne for my child (age 7) because he would love them and it would help with his thinking. The game looks exactly like the box version in those screen shots. Personally, as long as the price is right … so when will these be portable?

Awesome. Totally unfamiliar with all 3, but that’s what tutorials are for! Plus, they’re arcade games, so I automatically can’t wait!

One of my collegues is into board gaming and the other week he was raving about both colonists of catan and carcassonne… so I’ll definately take a look at it when they come out :)

Catan is a must buy! looks really great.. Hopefully they make an XBLA game of Axis & Allies.. that would be awesome!

W00t! Yes finally some boardgames, and very good choices. I play Catan and Carcassone on a regular basis with friends and both are very good fun. Alhambra doesn’t ring a bell, but probably follows a similar concept judging the look of things..

I don’t have a clue what the fuck is going on whatsoever by looking at the screenshots.

Discuss.

I’ve actually linked all the game titles to overview pages of the respective board games. Worth a read :)

What about Risk? Great multiplayer game, though granted you can’t really sit down for a quick game of it…
