Windows Media Player 11 streaming won’t be happening after all
Wondering why the promised streaming of video to your 360 doesn’t work with WMP11 Beta 2? Thought a dashboard update would fix it? Sadly, this is not the case.

It seems that after all the hype a simple Microsoft error mis-guided almost the whole of the Xbox community. Microsoft originally stated in a press release for Beta 2 that:
If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices such as Xbox 360 or other digital media receivers.
Great, the 360 can stream videos. Sadly, this is turns out to be false. Ken Fisher from Arstechnica fired off an email straight to MS asking for the facts. The response was not so good:
that it was an error on their part. While WMP does support Windows Media Connect for pictures and music, video is not supported.
So, loyal Xboxic readers, arm yourself with your mouse and click your way over to Wildchicken, the lead designer of the Xbox User Experience team and complain on his comments section about the lack of video streaming on the 360.
Thanks to frontieruk and InsaneBastard for the submit!

Cheers on your first article Ross!
FTW!
Picture FTW!
Meh….I’m lucky enough to have Media Center.
Nice work Rossko, and welcome to the club
Its kind of a moot point for the future… almost all of the vista machines will have MCE enabled. But still would like to see them break the lock down on videos
Is there a reason why videos can’t be streamed?
MS would like you to purchase either Media Center Edition or better yet, there new OS Vista
Come on…it’s common logic. It’s like Sony making the PSP be able to use all mem sticks instead of just theirs
You shouldn’t brng Sony into it, makes you sound rather fanboy-ist
If MS want to be better, why not let everyone do it?
Well, in vista you’ll get vista mediacenter edition anyway.
Not in the standard version you’re not. There’s still going to be seperate versions, and the one with MC capability is going to be more expensive. So it’s relly no difference to the current situation.
Just use Transcode360 streams Avi Divx Xvid etc…with no problem
yeah but thats incompatible with Home Edition
hmmm. Still I hope they upgrade Windows media connect to let us stream video. It makes sense MS!
at the bottom of the arstechnica article, it says that a ms rep said it would be supported!! what’s going on here???!?!
ha good one!
Strangely enough, I was able to stream a WMV-file (review from gamespot on Neverwinter Nights 2) from my XP-computer on the first days after the fall update. However, now my 360 doesn’t seem to do that anymore. Has anyone else noticed this?
