Gears of War won’t suck on SDTVs
That’s right boys and girls. Epic has stated in their official message board that they’ve been testing on a wide range of televisions so that we won’t all be delt massive damage for squinting 3 hours straight to read text like we all recently did in a certain Capcom title. Did someone say something about Dead Rising? Anyway, 1up.com has all the info.
At Xbox 360’s launch, Ubisoft revealed they hadn’t tested King Kong on SDTVs, meaning the brightness settings were way off and the game’s environments became extremely dark on SDTVs. In August, standard-definition TV users complained over the small text size in Dead Rising. Capcom’s reasoning: he game had been developed and tested mostly on HDTVs.
Except, now most developers have become accustomed to the HDTV movement, and gamers unable to afford a HDTV are left squinting their eyes during some play sessions. Epic Games, however, publically stated this morning, via their message board, that they’re testing Gears of War on SDTVs, in order to avoid the problems that have plagued other next generation releases.
We can all rejoice. We’ll be able to read the text. I know I’m glad. Aren’t you?
Emergence Day is coming November 12.

lmmfao!!! i dont have that problem cuz i play on my computer monitor so its HD all the time
What I find funny is that Sony may have had the shittiest couple of presentations I’ve ever seen/heard, but I’ll be damned if some of their dumb-ass comments won’t live with us forever.
“Massive Damage” and “Giant Crabs” may be two of them, and “RIIIIIIIDGEEE RACERRRR!” could be another, seriously. From a marketing standpoint, I think they should use those for their ads/commercials.
Could you imagine seeing the ad for Genji 2 where it’s got a crab on it’s back and the only text on the page is “Attack it’s weak-point for MASSIVE DAMAGE”?
I think it’s a great idea.
Sony seems to attack themselves at their weak points for massive damage every week with a new letdown.
GO BUY A OLD XBOX IF YOU HAVE A PLAIN SDTV
you not worth it!
This is a next gen console for next gen displays
sorry if its come hard on you.. but its true
No.
Most retarded thing I’ve heard today.
its like buying a dvd player if you have a black and white tv!
No it’s not, now go post somewhere where people won’t care about your negative IQ, thanks.
YLA G: it’s not, quit acting like a retard.
yeah right.. i see you don’t know me
anyway, everyone with a LCD or a VGA monitor knows what i am saying.. its a big difference.
If you play it on a regular SD tv THEN its bad for the eyes. Not only for the smaller fonts now but for the flickering (even on a 100 hz tv) and distortion of the lines.
There’s a USA Today article out there, that seems to paraphrase the Official Xbox Magazine’s editor as saying that graphics are only “marginally” better on a SDTV versus current systems.
I just think that paying 399$ for a next gen console and pluging it on a SDTV is a waste of cash. Hi-Def is THE number one reason to get a 360.
sorry.. a bit frustrated today Nino.. gone stop now..
There’s hardly any flickering and the whole ‘marginally better than current gen on SDTV’ thing is plain bullshit. I don’t care about your $5000 TV, quit justifying your purchase here.
$700 for a 27inch samsung
so thats not that mush for a better experience
lets talk in a few years
gameplay is kind of important too, not just screen resolution
Nino’s right.
So YLA G, everyone can afford a HD-TV? What about college students that worked over summer to buy xbox 360, but didn’t get enough to buy a high def tv? Just SOL for them?
Getting brain cancer is hard after one night of playing.
If you ask me a joke not in place man. Wait untill you get it you’ll enjoy…
It wasn’t in place, fixed.
Damn fast reacted.
Good article though. Good to see some game producers still think of 95% of CRT users compared to 5% of all TV owners with a HDTV.
But well actually I don’t care owning HDTV’s
says a european user :p
Actually I’m not sure if my last scentence was put well and read right
“But well actually I don’t care owning HDTV’s ”
I meant I don’t care for CRT support for myself that much as I own HDTV’s to connect my 360 on to
my tv is 19 yrs old…glad to know someone is still thinking about us =]
Well I am european, but saved like a bastard to get the 46″ Samsung LCD the moment it became available in europe, because I do agree up to a point, you are missing out withoutthe HD, but hey its your choice. There are affordable ones on the market, but who wants affordable, I just wanted fucking huge!!
same here, spent over a year researching before i bought my 50′ plasma, got that before the 360, but not much before… and never looked back.
