Gears of War demo? [Update]

One of our lovely forum members snagged this pretty interesting find. On UK’s official Xbox page of information about the Microsoft points you can buy to download content from the marketplace, there’s a picture on the site that reads ‘Gears of War DEMO’. Epic has consistently denied a demo, but we’ve got a picture that says otherwise.

Update: Looks like the idea of a demo has been shot down big time by Mark Rein at the official forums. Nice idea, but won’t be happening. Shame.

This pretty much confirms a demo of Gears of War, but it does not confirm when it will be released. Will it be before November 12? Will it be 6 months after the release? It’s too early to tell obviously. Another thing to note that it’s in the Microsoft points section of Xboxic is strongly hoping that we won’t need to pay for this demo. It would really suck. It’s probably nothing, but it is something to look out for.

We do however have a screenshot to show you:

Gears Demo?

It’s only a matter of time before Microsoft yanks the picture down, unless something is going to be announced today. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Thanks to MIT ACID for finding this and posting it in our forum. of War demo? [Update] newsvine:Gears of War demo? [Update] furl:Gears of War demo? [Update] reddit:Gears of War demo? [Update] fark:Gears of War demo? [Update] Y!:Gears of War demo? [Update] gamegrep:Gears of War demo? [Update]

Then don’t make me help you not say anything.

As long as I don’t have to pay for it I’ll download it. Screw paying for demos.

Comment by feh on 2006-10-16 19:58:28 | Reply

Huh? Paying for demos. What console have you been playing?

He means because it’s in the picture with the microsoft points.

Comment by The M.A.R.T. on 2006-10-16 20:12:56 | Reply

Yeah that’s strange in the picture with MS points.

I guess they could even pull that one off. I want it that bad, even the demo. I would pay just up to 800 points with my eyes closed allready

I checked around the interweb, and no-one has it yet. Another ‘Xboxic first!’ When it gets round, will pull it down. How can the screw up so bad all the time? Assuming this info was released a bit too early.

I don’t know if it is a screw up, a lot of companies let info ’slip’ as it generates publicity. I hope it is one of the promised added good stuff meant to be released after tomorrows update.

there’s an update tomorrow??? Cool, what does it involve?

Comment by Indigo X on 2006-10-16 20:47:18 | Reply

Haven’t the developers repeatedly stated that there is no demo before the game has shipped?
I read recently that they said that it was a matter of doing a demo or shipping the game before christmas, both were not possible.

it’s called lying….all companies do it to keep things that they want to be a surprise a…..well, a surprise

I’m sure that there’ll be a demo eventually, but I highly doubt that it will be before the actual launch.

Again … this game will sell on hype alone. Why bother with the demo?

…Okay, I feel better now. And yes, Epic said GOW would not have a demo - but that was then, this is now. So who knows? Maybe because there is a small percentage of people who have been turned away from this title as of late. I am one of them. So maybe this is Epic remembering that they are a Game Studio, and not on TRL this weekend.

I was the guy who had to shut EA’s defense force up about the Madden 07 demo fiasco a few months back during the “21 Days Of Madden”, so I don’t really think anything these days is unexpected. But it would nice to think Epic might be pulling in the reins a bit. But again, who knows…

Hey Xboxic,
you shouldn’t allow advertising on your site for things like, as this site is not what a gamer is all about

Comment by geekinabox on 2006-10-16 22:04:31 | Reply

xboxic is a great site … I’m all for them doing whatever pays the bills.

I’m not taking decisions as to what any of our 200k+ unique users would like to do. I suppose some of them will appreciate that service, so yeah why not run ads for them :)

Comment by StGermain on 2006-10-17 21:38:00 | Reply

I agree with DSK UK, it feels wrong to advertise that service. It’s like advertising viagra on a website for impotent people :) It’s tempting but wrong :) I’ll get my few gamerpoints the right way thank you!

Its called news, and thank you Xboxic and crew for showing me the thing I wouldn’t normally see on other site’s!!!

It’s a cool demo!

It slices, it dices! It watches the children after school. It washes your laundry! Impress business associates, wow chicks, and simply be the mucho grande studmuffin with the Gears Of War demo*.

* DISCLAIMER - GOW demo does not really exist. It is a figment of Epic’s imagination and is meant to cause fanboys to lose sleep, buy Jenny MaCarthy DVDs for clues, and to make sure you have that wallet opened up wider than a NoCal porn fluffer, you stupid lemming. You will buy this game, you have no choice or else we will make a music video with footage from level one! Don’t make us do it, because we will. Try me buddy, because I got my finger on the record button RIGHT NOW. Usher is right here to add the backing vocals. Buy the game sheep, BUY THE GAME!!!!! ARRRRAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

Comment by ExpandedFlame on 2006-10-16 23:09:06 | Reply

lol, I was about to comment here to tell everyone to “give up with this subtle clues about a Gears of War demo, the game will come soon enough!!!”
and yet you give this huge clue winking everyone in the face.. haha, neat, but why would they let this banner slip onto if the demo isnt ready..

i hope they wait till AFTER the game release, so then people like me can download it without servers slowing becuase everyone will be playing the full game (where I live I wait a few extra weeks for a friend to ship me a game :()

And yet again Mark rein crushes our dreams:
“Comment on what? I don’t see Gears of War in that list. There is no Gears demo and there won’t be before launch. I suspect that is a generic header with the Gears image in it. There aren’t any plans at the moment to make a demo of Gears. We have other things we’re going to be working on as soon as Gears has gone gold but I can not elaborate on them at this point in time.”

Comment by SidearmS on 2006-10-16 23:30:19 | Reply

And Mark Rein’s next post, 30 minutes later (use the above link, and scroll to the bottom):

“Just saw the dog tag image with the “Microsoft points”. It just isn’t true. There is no demo coming out before the game ships and I have no idea if we’ll do one after the game ships or not. Right now there are no plans to do one as I said earlier in this thread. I have asked Microsoft to take that image down.”

As of now (4:30 PM CST), it is still there.

I won’t light the firestorm with the concept of paying for the GOW demo with MP points, but I will say it would be a stupid, stupid, idea to do so.

And he is pretty clear about that demo statement. At least I think so. So his stance is unchanged; that’s cool, because so is mine.

Gears Of War the placement! Gears Of War the female body spray! Gears Of War the retractable lawn trimmer!

I’d never pay for a demo.

If there is not going to be a demo of for GOW before it is released, then the reason can only be that they wish to get sales on the hype for this game. A demo may change the mind of a lot of people. I would like GOW, but the lack of a demo will mean getting it on a 10 day return from GAME (UK). No demo means that they have no faith in the game or are willing to let people buy it who will be dissapointed with it. And not everyone can mange to get it on a 10 day trial or rental.

No demo… be wary.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-10-17 17:48:41 | Reply

According to GAME.

The 10 day return policy (if you didn’t want the game for any reason {even if you thought it was shit or you had just completed it} you could return it within 10 days) is now over.

It is now a 28 day return policy and they have the security sticker on the box, if the sticker is removed then they will not accept return of the game for anything other than faulty goods.

And you cannot get the sticker off without fucking it, trust me I tried.

So bad news is no more 10 games of one £40.

Comment by Lotus 111s on 2006-10-17 11:19:51 | Reply

Or you could just buy it for £39.99 from Tesco’s like i did Just Cause, then hammer the game for 2 weeks and sell it for £37.50 to a complete mug on Ebay. LMAO £2.50 for 2 weeks play cheapest fun i’ve ever had :) from a game.
