Taito games coming to XBLA?

Lots of publishers where skeptical about Xbox Live Arcade when the service launched. Time went by and sales went up so more publishers jumped on the bandwagon to get a piece of the pie. After Namco and Konami, Taito is now in the early phase of trying to bring us those lovely nostalgic games.

A topic in a forum appeared on Empire Interactive’s website, Taito’s publisher. A moderator asks you to post a list of the 3 Taito games you like most, and answer the question if online multiplayer would be important for you. If you have no idea which games are made by Taito you can head to this Wikipedia page, there’s well over a 100 games you can choose from. There’s no mentioning of Xbox Live Arcade in the forum post, but since Nintendo’s Virtual Console will be featuring the exact copies of the classics instead of perhaps improved, multiplayer enabled ones, it’s think it’s fair to say this post is about Xbox Live Arcade.

Hi All

I hope you can help us out with a bit of retro advice, If you were to pay to download a Taito Classic what would your top 3 be ??

Also, without giving the game away :) would online multiplayer be important to you downloading it ??

Come on guys - post your lists and let us know what you want.

If like me you’re really looking forward to certain titles like Bubble Bobble, Arkanoid and Operation Wolf please register on their forums and post your list.

I don’t want any more “classics” at the moment. There are already too many as it is. Let’s get some more indie-games on there, perhaps Bomberman Original as a classic, then we’ll talk Taito.

You don’t want anymore classics but you want Bomberman which is a classic :P Your logic makes sense! I don’t care about classics either I just want Bomberman, Operation Wolf, Bubble Bobble, Arkanoid, Supaplex, Boulder Dash and 10 others.

Yeah, the logic is screwy the way I worded it… should read, “If we have to have a “classic,” it should be Bomberman Original.”
:P

Was that not SEGA? Just remember playing it on the Master System.

It was made by IREM, who also made a side scrolling beat ‘em up called Vigilante.

The hours of fun I had playing alot of the IREM titles on my PC Engine, one reason I am going to eventually get a Wii.

Mmmm. R-Type mixed with Geometry Wars prettiness. Yum. We’ll file that with Bomberman Original.

Bomberman is the only one worthy (maybe Boulder Dash). After that, enough with the retro games.

If i want to play anymore classics i’ll use a emulator on my PC. Get live back to what it was intended to be, a place for innovative low cost development.

I think it’s fair to say that XBLA is intended to be a place for both innovative low cost development and a way to keep innovative older games alive at a low cost after they’re out of the stores. Just like you can rent older movies in Blockbuster (or Netflix), you should still be able to get old games and play them. Until emulators, Gametap, etc., that was impossible, and until XBLA it wasn’t feasible for most people to do. I think both goals (innovative new games and maintaining older games) are crucial for the future of gaming.

That’s true, XBLA is a place where you should be able to get coin-op classics and indie-games alike, but all we’ve been getting is coin-ops. I think one of each should launch each wednesday. I mean, Greg Cannassa (sp?) said they have a “backlog of great titles”. And they are going to need every one of them when Wii’s VC comes out.

I would have to say that Darius is my pick. If you never played it, it was a side scroller game where you scrolled across three different video screens. I don’t know if they could really pull it off, but with HD it might work. Oh my god that game was awesome…for a while that was the only game my best friend and I thought was worth dumping quarters into.

ARKANOID YES.

If “Classics” only means games like Pong, Pacman, Frogger and so on, I don’t actually want anymore. thought it was cool in the beginning, but I don’t buy anymore now. Only download demos.
I played all the originals back when they where new 20+ years ago.
Arcade games like “Exed Exes”, “1942″, “Wonderboy” “Ghost’n'Goblins” etc. I can say I would pay for anytime, but no more of the really old stuff for me..
There are tons of fantastic old arcade games that would be awesome to port to Live Arcade, so why not choose the real classics!

I agree with JJ. Port Track & Field immediately.

Its coming! I can’t wait either. Hope it plays well over Live.

I WANT WOLFENSTEIN!!!

That’s not too unlikely given the ID back-catalogue deal. I’d expect Doom 2 and Quake 1 before that though ;)

I second DannyBoy R-Type is still the best ever side scrolling shoot-em-up. I think R-Type was by Irem but i can’t be sure without going to check and i haven’t got time at the moment.

Oh yeah!!

Comment by StGermain on 2006-10-17 21:24:01 | Reply

Now THAT would rock! Or even coop with two local players… it’s one of very few games I’d like to play again. Titus the Fox and Blues Brothers also come to mind as does Outrun but then Outrun would suck when you can also play PGR3 on the same console :)

Comment by Stonie on 2006-10-18 06:38:01 | Reply

I actually said about Double Dragon Co-op over Live for XBLA whilst racing a few mates on PGR3 last week.

The amount of times myself and a good friend of mine used to play this in the not so local arcades is beyond belief.

Renegade, Chase HQ(SCI Too), Elevator Action/2, Jungle Hunt, All the Bubbles, Denshi De Go :D

Comment by Travis on 2006-10-17 21:48:58 | Reply

BUBBLE BOBBLE! With full Xbox live co-op! This is now my most anticipated title, and it’s not even in development or official yet :(

I’d love to see the original Worms on XBLA. 4 player on/offline fun, worm rankings, the whole shebang.

I would love to be able to get the whole “series” of my favorite Tatio games

Here are my top 3 Tatio games. Most, I’ve never seen the “sequels” and would love to see them included!

1. Bubble Bobble (with Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, Bubble Symphony, Bubble Memories)
2. Qix (with Qix II and Super Qix)
3. Elevator Action (with Elevator Action Returns)

Why do we never see the “full series” for a title when they come out in a collection? I already have the Tatio Legends Xbox disc, but would buy again to get all of the sequels. And online multiplayer would only sweeten the pot.

Please?!
