Xbox 3 already in the works

It looks as though Microsoft are keeping ahead of the game, since they are already looking into the next, next generation of console. Bearing in mind absolutely no competition is out to challenge the 360 yet, is this a little early?

Apparently not, according to Chris Lewis, head of Xbox Europe:

Asked whether preliminary work had begun on the next, next-gen, Lewis nodded in agreement with the view that “as soon as you develop something, it’s old”, and said: “Of course we’re thinking about that… we’re constantly thinking about the next thing, we have to. It’s my point about complacency - you can’t sit back on your laurels in this business - the consumer won’t let you, the developers certainly won’t let us. So that’s happening right now.”

I guess you don’t make billions of dollars a year by sitting around doing nothing. And it’s nice to know that they expect the console life of the 360 to last longer than the original Xbox (which came out in 2001 in the US):

However, Lewis stressed that he thinks the lifecycle of 360 will be longer than that of Xbox 1 - which would mean 360 will be hot right into 2010 - and added that 360’s design is inherently customisable: “We want to give people the chance to continue to expand - either through accessories or storage, or the Live which continually evolves and broadens - 360 can evolve in its own right, and that’s an important step that we took beyond [Xbox 1].”

So don’t panic just yet people. Microsoft’s attention is still fully focused on the 360, and it can only get better from here. The launch of the PS3 and Wii will encourage Microsoft to improve on what they already have in order to stay ahead of the competition, and with November looking already excellent (Rainbow Six Vegas, Call of Duty 3, Small Arms, and one other apparently good game), it’s been a pretty good year for Mr. Gates.

What do you guys think then? Are they right to start thinking this early about the new console? Does it happen automatically? Or do you think that they should just stop for a moment, look at what they have and work on that? Personally, I think it’s great MS are thinking so far ahead. It will most likely un-nerve Nintendo and, more so than anyone else, Sony, who have had trouble getting one next-gen console out.

wow, that was a… coherent comment.
Did you mean, “Xbox Live is a piee of shit because it knocked everyone offline. I pay for this shit?!”

Or did you mean:
“I don’t want updates. EVER! I would rather have uninterrupted gaming 24/7 instead of a console that evolves to suit the gamers needs. Damn, I want Microsoft to reimburse me that 11p for that day.”

I agree, some people are just plain retarted. If they never upgraded the servers for XBL, and they get say what.. 1000 more XBL users per day, wouldn’t you think it’d become overloaded and they’d have to expand somehow. Plus adding new features is a definate bonus for us end users, because we are getting more for something we’ve already paid for.

Some people just don’t get it, and judging from his grammer, he’s definately below the nations 100 point IQ average.

Also, the word “launch” 2 lines below the xbox logo in this news post is spelled wrong, might wanna fix that admin. ;)

Typo fixed, thnx :)

This happens with all of the major console makers. No doubt as soon as the PS3 launches Sony will be working on the PS4, and When the Wii launches Nintendo will be working on their next console.

There’s nothing abnormal about what they’re doing.

(Hmm, I think I’m right, but don’t hold me to it :p )

smellslikepie is exactly right, in fact MS actually said they started developement of the 360 as soon as the original xbox was out the door so its not abnormal at all. After all all those developement guys have to keep their jobs right. :)

I don’t think today is an update, that was all day yesterday so its a piece of shit and I can’t believe I pay for it.

Comment by Raptor on 2006-10-19 00:46:20 | Reply

Yesterday’s downtime was for maintenance purposes, it really would be a piece of shit if it wasn’t taken care of. Most likely they upgraded the servers to handle the onslaught of people who will be buying the 360 come christmas.

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 00:49:00 | Reply

No, it’s carrying on from yesterday. They haven’t finished yet. Why’re you so ignorant? All you have to do is spend less than five minutes on the internet to find that out.

If you don’t like paying for it then don’t renew your subscription, simple isn’t it? I can’t believe you’re so annoyed because you have to spend less than 2 days offline. Ever thought you might be addicted? :p

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 00:50:51 | Reply

Jesus, will you look at your grammar?! It doesn’t matter that it’s been two days, just be happy that they do update servers and their console. Everyone else manages to cope with it, why not you?

Live is still up, just not Xbox.com.

Except I’ve literally just this minute been disconnected. D’oh!

If they update its a horrible job, look a cod3 on live it took 2 months or longer to fix lag and the lag is still not fixed all the way the old xbox could handle a room full of 12 call of duty can’t hold 8 with problems. So don’t act like they do updates because I don’t see them what updates did they do yesterday nobody knows because they didn’t do any updates.

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 01:03:50 | Reply

Call of duty 3 isn’t even out yet. They had problems with Call of Duty 2. There are many games that function perfectly on Live, there are ALWAYS anomolies. You can’t avoid them.

They haven’t announced what they changed yesterday and today so how about you just sit tight and wait until it’s actually finished?

Whne the Dashboard update arrives later this fall then you won’t be complaining, will you? That’s when you should expect the major upgrades.

Also, Call of Duty Two wasn’t made by Microsoft, was it? Maybe you should pay more attention to the games you play. The lag on Call of Duty 2 had nothing to do with Microsoft but with the company that developed it. It was them that created the patch.

Also, you can’t “fix lag” as a developer, it’s an inherent thing about that thing we call “the internet”. All the devvers can do is better handle that thing, but as long as they don’t control the internet they can’t abolish it.

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 01:06:11 | Reply

You talk like a child, so I doubt that you WILL be getting a PS3. I really do. Maybe if you backed up your claims rather than making wild allegations then people would actually believe you and acknowledge your contributions. What you’re doing now is incredibly immature.

Comment by Hologuts on 2006-10-19 01:01:55 | Reply

Getting back to the original story.

Bill gates did mention just before the launch of the 360 there would be another xbox even if the 360 failed because Microsoft are in it for the long haul regardless. He stated the 360 would have a lifespan of 5 years (IMO. long enough for a console). He also said they needed to look at technologies that are in development now and would be ready by the time the new console was going to be ready for launch.

So they would be making plans already for the next version. Considering he said this just over 12 months ago, it isn’t really new information.

Xbox 720 :D

Hey,i wont kiss your ass this is an xbox related site!Get tha hell outta here!

Read the commmets that wasn’t the update because that will be out if fall. Like I said xbox shut down live yesterday so they could play with themselves, xbox.com won’t say what they did because they didn’t do anything.

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 01:25:19 | Reply

No, they shut it down so they could update the servers not the dashboard. They said this wasn’t the Dashboard update, but scheduled maintainence.

When all is finished you will see that changes have been made to the My Xbox section of Xbox.com.

Microsoft won’t say what they have done because they haven’t finished it yet.

Comment by Kiss my ass on 2006-10-19 01:30:48 | Reply

Why can’t they say until they finish thats all I am saying its like its a big secret.

Comment by smellslikepie on 2006-10-19 01:33:48 | Reply

Because it keeps the consumers interest. It’d be pretty boring if they told you outright and then did the update. I think it’s best that this is a surprise.

I mean, they HAD to tell us about Live, and wthe website, being down for a while but it’s good of them to give us a bit of a surprise at the end. Even if it is just better integration with the PC.

Comment by haloman on 2006-10-19 01:36:12 | Reply

yeah we can aford a ps3 but we would rather get a wii and a 360 for around the same price with better games

I think Microsoft said it was a silly thing for Sony to enter Nintendo’s main market, so I think it won’t happen.

Comment by Xiard on 2006-10-19 15:37:29 | Reply

That may be true, but as a long-time developer using Microsoft development tools, I say it would be a mistake to EVER count Microsoft out in any market. Microsoft is extremely good at finding ways to achieve synchronicity between their products. Look at what they’re trying to do with tying XP to the XBox 360 with media center, and look at how they’re establishing the concept of using XBox Live from anywhere (PCs, mobile phones, XBox 360, etc.).

Then look at Windows CE. And then look at the Zune. Microsoft is hovering around the playground. They’re trying to find a way to get a popular handheld device with their software in the hands of the consumer…and I don’t think they’re going to stop until they manage it.

Handheld gaming probably won’t be how they enter the market…but you can bet your ass it’s part of the long-term strategy. They’re trying to get that foot in the door somehow, some way. And once they do, there are a HUGE number of ways for them to leverage the infrastructure they’re building up.

I won’t even go into the various ways that I can think of that they could do that. One obvious one, though, would be to automatically sycnhronize XBLA games with your handheld device. Either bluetooth or WI-FI, there’s no reason you couldn’t set your “Microsoft-Enabled” handset to automatically pull over XBLA games (Geometry Wars, Pac-Mac, Cloning Clyde, you name it) you’ve downloaded on your XBox 360 (or PC, or microwave, etc.). HD XBLA games might be an issue initially, but there is certainly plenty of horsepower on modern handhelds to handle the processing needs.

In short, regardless of the public statements Microsoft is making, they are salivating at the idea of establishing that trifecta…PC, TV entertainment system, and handheld device. And having witnessed Microsoft’s success in penetrating other markets, I would bet they’ll succeed in that as well (eventually).

To all the people who want monies returned for the 2 days of downtime. You people do realize that if they were gonna credit you anything its gonna be like 30 cents right? Its less than $5 a month and then divide that by 30 days in the month and theres your total. Wow you people are beggars.

i think it is a little early to be thinking of the next next gen. after all the technology used to make xbox 3 isnt even invented yet.

Comment by steven ratty on 2006-10-19 13:48:52 | Reply

i bet this one has HDMI and hd dvd built in.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2006-10-19 14:37:32 | Reply

Well probably, considering it won’t be out four 4-5 years. But by then at least the technology will be cheaper so it probably won’t come out at a stupid price.

Why not come back and state something else obvious.

You know, every console company (like MS, nintendo, Sony) Starts already working on the next gen just after the release of the console.
