Fall update to be released within a week?
Thomas Meyer, an active reader of the Russian based Xbox360Fanboy.com, did his homework and came to an interesting conclusion while listening to Major Nelson’s latest podcast. In the podcast Major says that he can’t use his new 360 Wireless Communicator on his retail 360 yet. The Fall update probably fixes this problem and since the Wireless Communicator is set for release next Tuesday in the US it would be likely that we’re getting the update before that. Microsoft wouldn’t sell us a product that doesn’t function yet, right?
Major Nelson says [76:20] that you cannot use the new Xbox 360 Wireless Communicator on a retail Xbox 360 yet and he tried it on his developer kit. Since the Communicator is scheduled for release on October 31st and people should be able to use it on that day, it’s logical to assume that the Fall Update must be distributed no later than Oct 31st. Right?

Yeah it the dashboard update we already saw some pictures from. Only it was scheduled for November. But the conclusion from Thomas Meyer seem logical.

I’ve had 2 headsets myself. The original one, and the replacment I had to buy when my Siberian Huskie ate the first.
in that case they’ll either delay the release or give us a minor update!!

I’d love one of those wireless headsets, but I reckon it’ll be fairly expensive. GameSeek.co.uk are saying its ÂŁ34.99 (€50 apx).

If you did mean ÂŁ500 and were joking, then yeah, something ridiculously high wouldnt surprise me.
They do minor updates to Xbox Live every couple of months that take about 10 secs or less to download the update.
I think this could be no different. I don’t think it will require a Full dashboard update to implement a wireless headset.
My guess is the Fall update will come out near GOW launch or shortly after to allow for a suprise feature to be unlocked in GOW. (total speculation) But I don’t think the dash update will be when the wireless headset launches.
I’m sure they’ll offer a tiny update. I doubt they’d distribute an incomplete dash update. That’s just asking for trouble. Unless the update is complete….
no im more inclined that a dash update was coming out when the HD-DVD machine comes out to allow for the extra play button thing on the dashboard.

But if you recall the last dashboard update had support for the camera, months before the camera hit store shelves.

Yes they would, they sold us the xbox 360 didnt they. Sending my launch machine back tomorrow. bought a core to playu in the emantime and it went back to the shop as it was faulty, and it looks like the replacement is also a bit dodgy as the discs coming out of it are hotter than in my premium machine..
And just about everyone on my friends list has sent their machine back to MS as faulty.#
Myself and many of the people on my friends list have had machines since launch day. Myself and most of my friends list are yet to have a major problem with it.
The only thing that I will say about mine is the the fans in it seem to build up speed while sat at the dashboard and keep building up until they are running at full speed. Machine stays cool though.
Might I also add that just because you buy a new piece of kit, whether it be a part for your waching machine, a part for your car or indeed a brand new console ,it is not guaranteed to work, it is only guaranteed for a replacement if it’s found to be faulty.
Glad I bough the extra 2 years warranty…
Thats funny, cos I have had mine since the launch day, not had one problem, and out of my whole friends list only 3-4 has had to send them back.

Funny that , no i dont. I didnt exagerate the statement. as ive now had 3 machines, and 2 of them, possibly the 3rd are faulty.
And yes most of my FL have had replacements, not all, but most of them.
So no i dont feel that i have exagerated the statement

I hope when the wireless headset is released they have a new vision cam bundle that includes it instead of the old wired headset.

I just came to think of something. Viva Pinata supports user created content to be shipped through the mail system. That would require an update as well.
I hope you all burn!!!!! just kidding, anyway yeah this sounds about right, and to the guys that said, “no I think it’ll come out with the HD-DVD”, think about what they did with the cam, the update came out much before the product so:
a) 360s would be ready for the cam when it was released
and
b) To allow for more mass testing to be conducted
They might be doing something similar to this now, release the update now to get more mass HD-DVD testing going and to ready the 360 for the add-on whenever it is released.
The way I see it both the Wireless headset and the HD-DVD player are bound to come with a “boot cd” for the 360 that contains the dash update, it has to. It’s the same with the Live Arcade Unplugged vol 1 that had the dash updates with the camera support. How else will they be able to allow people without internet connection (yes they do exist) to use the wireless headset (for lan games?) or HD-DVD player.

I propose that we round them all up. Tie their hands and feet together then throw them in a lake, if they sink and drown fine. If they float we pull them out and burn them as UNHOLY WITCHES!

When Major mentioned this in his blogcast, he did mention the next dash update specifically (along the lines of “Fall,Spring,whatever update”), so i recon this could be possible

I think we would like XVID alot more then DIVX, I can’t remember the last video that I watched that was encoded with DIVX.
what? you do realize that they are the same thing, correct? they both decode the same 3c content. divx can decode xvid and xvid can decode divx.

I think the dashboard update is very near. The reason I state this is because in Major’s last podcast, he had an interview and the guy said Microsoft typically makes big updates (like the last one we just had) and usually makes a dashboard update within a few days. Major jumped in and suggested it could be weeks away.
Also in the latest OXM there is a section talking about the dashboard update, it stated if you are reading this now you probably already have the update. They also state they will include the update in the next magazine disc.

does anybody know if i can we use 2 headsets at the same time in video chat as the headset connects to the 360 not the pad. or 1 wired headset and 1 wireless.

apparently some people have gotten a newsletter from MS mentioning about the dash update…as usual it got sent a little early. Can’t find a pic of it yet though
oxm said it should be out “when you read this” as PG4 said earlier. i just got my magazine today, some have had it for a week already. so the update is very near.
acording to gamestop.com, the wireless headset won’t see release until 6/11/06 now
