HD-DVD sells out; Oh the irony
It seems the HD-DVD player is taking the world by storm. It has already sold out on Amazon.com, and I know for a fact that Gameplay had to also take the listing down from their website, because I ordered one from there. However, as Planet Xbox 360 writes, it makes for an interesting turn around.
Remember when the PS3 price was announced way back in May, and everyone went crazy. “It will never sell at that price”, “Bloody Blu-Ray, we just want games” and so on were all shouted across forums. And yet, this hardware add-on bumps the price not short of a PS3. So what has all the fuss been about?
Yes, you get a choice with Microsoft whereas you don’t with Sony, but the HD-DVD drive is so popular, it makes it obvious that people really aren’t bothered on how much they spend to upgrade their console. People failed to realise that what you get with a PS3 is actually a bloody good deal. You get built in High Definition video player and a bigger hard drive from the box (Premium, of course). So it is with great irony that people snap up this item as if it were rarer than a Sony executive not making some sort of press cock-up.

And before the comments start flying in “Ah, Rossko UK’s just a Sony fanboy”; no, I’m not. I am actually quite the opposite. However I am not so Microsoft-blind to see that for all the haters of Sony at the price, MS have done exactly the same, just in a more stealthy way. As I mentioned, I know you get a choice with the 360. But at the end of the day, the future is High Definition, and like it or not, you will all (80% I reckon) get this add-on at some point in the 360’s lifespan, making MS as good/bad as Sony.
But alas, we all have different views, and we are all welcome to have them. But just bear in mind when you are buying an HD-DVD drive, and you bash Sony a lot, you are doing the same thing but for another company. And it isn’t about how Sony have handled the public, that’s for different posts. Flaming starts just below.
Thanks to OS Perry for the pointer.

I’M NOT BUYING IT! Because I could care less about DVD’s let alone HD-DVD’s. I’m glad I have a choice in the matter…MS for teh win.
I agree. The 360 should have had HD-DVD built in from the start, but at the moment, I guess it’s just not a popular enough format for some.
I won’t be buying an HD-DVD drive for a long time, tbh.
If it’s not popular enough late 2006, why should it have had it late 2005?
No flaming but just clear thoughts:
It’s in the persons mind of perception.
Spending 600 dollars at launch instantly is a different thing then spreading money on buying stuff over months if not years.
That’s the point of it all.
A year back @ launch: 400 dollars/euros spend
Now it’s time to buy a new toy, so 200 dollars/euro’s spend.
The best part of it all still is: you have the choice. If BR wins in the end, you get ridd of the HD-DVD add-on and there will be a BR add-on by then for sure.
And the future is high-def. But how many people do have a HDTV right now? 5% of all TV’s are HDTV’s. And how many of those are 720p? Almost all. 1080p is still far away from the living room for the mass of people. Going from DVD to 720p is a step. But from DVD to 1080p is a huge step.
I think that’s just it. And what about streaming? Do we need discs that can be scratched in a few years time or can we stream/download HD material?
I agree, it is all psychological, but there is no escaping the fact that they are doing the same as Sony. Even if BR fails, you won’t through away your PS3, they will still produce games with that format.
I never mentioned anything about 1080p. Personally that’s a bit of hype as far as I’m concerned. 720p does just fine, 1080p you would do well to notice unless on a massive screen. Interesting point on that stream/download, bear with me for 10 minutes…

yes MS already said they have the option to do a bluray addon down the road if it was to win the war… but by the latest sales numbers and reviews of quality… and the number of movies on the market… not to mention price lol… hehe and the fact that by 2007 their will be 10 million people that can get hddvd for 200$ lol … ya i think the hddvd future is looking bright.
As for the streaming movies and hddvd downloads (and possible rentals… expiration date feature anyone???) 2 words… zune marketplace
i can almost guarntee come 2007 we will see zune marketplace, and probably the msn soapbox all mingleing together on the Zune and 360
Exactly, I don’t even own an HD tv yet.
i just do not care enough about my movies to justify this thing anyway. i mean i am all about high def when it comes to gaming, but i watch my movies off my network, all compressed with divx, and i am not even a little disappointed in the picture quality. and true, i am not a videophile, and i typically would prefer a good movie on a black and white set than a shit movie in high def, but still. do you really think 80% of 360 owners are going to have high def movies as a high enough priority to actually buy this? maybe those that would be buying an hd-dvd player anyway, but then, whatever. but i am glad as hell i did not have to pay for this peripheral that has nothing to do with gaming. to say that we will all be getting this thing seems more than a little odd to me, but i guess that is because i would have guessed exactly the opposite.

I just think, by the time the 360 is dying out (2010?), that most people will own one, for the simple fact that it is a cheaper way into the HD Movie market. £150 (add price of Core or Premium if you don’t own one) or £999? I know which I’d pick.
By 2010 they won’t still be £999. Hell, they may come down below £100 by that time due to the “HD-DVD Recorders” which will innevetably appear.
heh u know what i realized? the hd dvd component connects to 360 via USB. so that means that if one acquired an hd dvd drive for the 360 they may use it for their pcs as well…unlike ps3 wherein u must purchase a console with a BUILT IN drive…interesting indeed.
this isnt new, but people seem to ignore it microsoft has confirmed it will work on PC’s it just requires playback software like windvd’s new hddvd version
Lets see a ps3 do that hehe
Obviously, there exists a portion of 360 owners who have deep pockets and are interested in HD. The fact that they bought out the initial stock of the HD DVD player really says jack shit about what will happen long term, as it says nothing about the majority of gamers, and says absolutely nothing about people who haven’t purchased a next gen console. They sold the release units. I could have told you that would happen a year ago…
Fair enough. We shall see…
its not about the gamers, its about the movie watchers since thats what the hddvd addon is for.
Personally im considering getting 2 once they are back in stock, one for my pc and one for my 360
il get it when i get an hd tv
I thought this was a news site and not a soap box for newsposters with ‘opinions’
Well we’re proud of having opinions and doing more with news than just rewriting press releases like Gamespot and IGN. That’s why we have such active discussions in the comment section too
Yeah what Curry said you smelly cunt.
What a loud mouthed prick you are Glovner. Curry’s whole point was about the fact that the site is set up for discussion, and you call someone a “smelly cunt” for making a point?
Get a grip you little tosser, you wouldn’t say that to someone you didin’t know on the street unless you want battered, but I suppose everyone is rock hard behind a fucking keyboard.
Some heads need to fix up their attitudes.
So the same clearly applies to you with your rock hard reply.
More to the point I ain’t trying to act hard, I am just providing amusement for myself, hey it’s just the way we speak round these parts, join any room I am in and you will likely witness “The Banter” in which good friends call each other names like cunt in jest and we all have a laugh and get on.
So how about you grow up and stop placing so much emphisis on profanity, they are only bad words because people choose to treat them as such.
pwned
Of course people are going to buy it, it is the cheapest option for films in High def.
This does not mean they agree with the pricing.
I still think this deal is better than PS3 as it gives the choice. I will not be getting this add-on for a good while off yet.
The fact that the payment is spread makes it easier to manage aswell. I couldn’t get the money together for a brand new PS3 as easily as getting the 360 first and getting the HD-DVD later.
hd dvd is getting better reviews than bluray - i still don’t want either one
I’d have to agree with M.A.R.T. on this. When it comes to buying the ps3, you’ve also got to add the price of a few games as well. It’s now starting to look very expensive. To be able to split it over time makes a big difference.
Then you have the ones who don’t have hdtv. Alot of families don’t even have a progressive scan tv! What use is blue ray them?
lol remember how people bitched when the 360 was bundled with 3-4 games and an extra controller for ~600$ … do the same combo with the ps3… because its youknow… a game machine…. and its like close to 1000$ give me a break… first and foremost the 360 and ps3 are supposed to be game consoles…
I really think that it’s all about flexibility and not getting locked into an HD-DVD solution allowed the 360 to beat the PS3 to market by at least a year and from the looks of the BR problems it might be a couple of years before Sony is matching Microsoft’s production #s.
SONY is out selling M$ now, so they have the #’s. Everybody jumps on the soapbox and screams why PS3 is so bad and they have not even touched one yet. In a week or so, I think the tone of these little message boards is going to change and people will embrace the PS3 as a home entertainment component and the #’s will be there, just like the PS2.
Dude, how can the numbers “be there” when there will ony be 500,000 units there? The PS3 will sell 50 million units on Fantasy and Kojima lovers alone, but how can the numbers “be there” when the consoles won’t “be there”?
correction…
480.000 … japan lost 20k units apparently in the latest word from sony they reduced the estimate from 100k for japan to 80k… but knowing them its probably less at this point
I was obviously speaking about new consoles. Where did I scream that the PS3 is soo bad? I don’t doubt that Sony has a good product but I’ve been playing my 360 for almost a year now and I don’t regret the purchase. As far as technology there have been several game developers that have now gone on the record to say that both consoles are capable of delivering comparable quality and performance.
lol sony is outselling MS… yes the 100$ ps2 outsells the 400$ 360 go figure… toyota’s outsell bmw’s does it make it better?
No but it does make Toyota a more profitable company than BMW.
Does that argument hold water when talking about Sony and MS?
why are 90% of 360 news on this website dedicated to Xbox consoles negative to 360????
Are we supposed to only write positive stories because we are dedicated to one platform? Would you prefer us lying over taking a realistic look at our subject matter?
We don’t blindly say Microsoft is God and Xbox 360 is sacred, your absolutely right in that. We prefer critical honesty over misinformation, and I think you do too if you think about it
MS has just been screwing up quite some things recently, so yes we’ll be first to kick them over that. Only because we want them to improve since we love our 360s too
Thats whats funny before the whole ICGames change over it wasnt… the same day they announced the ps3ic one that same exact day all of a suddent they tone of all the artlces became negative
I totally agree, the DAY it happened, this website went sour!
agreed
disagreed. they write what they when they can however they feel they can. end of story.
We haven’t changed crew or anything on that day. Look at Microsoft if we’ve been posting more negative news on 360 since then. If they hadn’t started bricking 360s or milking microtransactions we would’ve been less ’sour’.
Here’s the problem: People don’t want to spend a lot upfront. You buy your car for so much money upfront, and than pay off $10,000+ over the next few years. You buy your house upfront, and as you pay it off you even upgrade it (new kitchen, bathroom). People just aren’t prepared to pay fully upfront, this is why Microsoft released two SKU’s, one with a bunch of stuff and one with nothing. Plus most of these drives being purchased are being purchased as a cheap solution to HD movies. “I have a 360, why not just by a $200 upgrade for movies.”
You’re comparing House prices to Console Prices? Are you real? Tell me how many people you know that can actually pay £200,000 for a small place straight off the bat? A car is a little saner, but it’s still a bit of an unfair or even incorrect analogy.
lol when a console bundle runs around 1000$ more than some midrange familys make in a month, its kinda safe to start discussing hi price comparisons
It’s called option, microsoft isnt forcing bluray or hddvd on anyone, if you want it its their for you theirs and easy upgrade path down the road if you decide you do want it plane and simple… and for the vast majority of people they dont need or want hd or bd yet because theirs still a war, and with a 200$ (with a movie i think) upgrade path for the 360 seems like a damn good option for us down the road if we do decide we want hd
Personally i dont want the hddvd or bluray built in because i want a GAME CONSOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now in a month or 2 when stocks are back in and maybe if i get my projector that does hidef then ill think about saving for the hddvd upgrade…
And btw the ps3 shipments dropped again from 500k to 480k at launch, give me a break with your “the numbers will be their”… 360 and the wii are the way to go this generation… the ps3 is just a over priced forced product…..
.
AND HERES THE BIGGIE!…. HDDVD IS WINNING THE WAR… Standalone sales for HDDVD from last month were 2-3x as many as bluray…. hddvd titles sold 11 to blurays 1 … and their are 3x as many hddvd movies out on the market and expected into mid 2007 as their are bluray movies….. and more importantly come 2007, theirs potentially 10 MILLION 360 users that can easily grab a hddvd player for 200$ … so ya … my moneys on hddvd, for the video quality, for the sales, and for the numbers.
People who buy it to use with VGA connection (the only way to get 1080p on HD-DVD playback) will regret.
XBOX 360 VGA connection has serious but in signal scale that cause washed out picture and if you adjust the TV to compensate for the fault you will lose shadow detail.
This is High Definition Experience MS try to offer?

It’s still not going to get any where near the 6 million people that have bought 360’s already.
It wouldn’t have made sense to include HD-DVD at launch because it wasn’t even ready to use. I’m glad that MS didn’t use HD-DVD!
@Effervescent I agree with you an the worst part of the history is that not all 1080P Displays accept this resolution with VGA I think is only a goodmands LCD than can accept it with VGA (the standard way to do it is trougt HDMI )
i dont know if it was said already cuz i didnt read others comments but you have to buy a 100.00$ hdmi cable as it is not included monster cables will sell you one
im not buys one, and probably never will, just dont wanna have to rebuy my favourite films in hd when they can be upscaled and i generally dont like most movies that come out these days..thats WHY i started gaming when i was 25 few years ago.. got tired of shitty rippoff movies..
The reason sony many 360 users knocked the PS3 price was because $600 for a gaming system is kind of much. The PS3 plays games and plays HI DEF movies, thats great, but for that price…come on. Not everyone uses their game consoles for movie watching. I know for a fact that I used my PS2 for movies less than 10 times, and I had my PS2 since launch. MS offering an optional HI DEF movie player is a smart move because if the HD DVD was built in, the price would have went up selling less 360s. If the PS3 didnt have built in BD…wouldnt it be cheaper??? Ms gave us options, sony didnt.
First of all, I think we have to agree we are early adopters as we have bought the first “next-gen” console in the first year of its release. We are around 6 millions.
Sony places the blue-ray player inside the Play Station 3 as a trojan horse to push this format (logical as Sony is part of the Blue-Ray Disc Association). On the other hand, Microsoft released his HD-DVD player add-on to counter Sony and because Microsoft is part of the HD-DVD consortium. We know this strategy can work. For example, my only reason to buy a HD TV is the Xbox 360.
Both are hoping those consoles will get a head start for their favorite format. I think the will mainly even each other (i.e. the difference will not be big enough to give a real advantage to one or the other format)
I doubt 80% of Xbox owner will buy the HD-DVD for two main reasons:
- most people do not have HD TV sets
- It is really two early to say which format will win the war
May be 80% of us (early adopters) will buy the HD-DVD player and will pay as much as for a PS3. I think this show Microsoft strategy was a good one. They release their console before Sony and cut the price down by using a standard DVD player. How could early adopters resist?
And now, they release the HD-DVD player “before” the PS3 and at the same time say they could in the future make a blue-ray player to reassure us we are not blocking ourselves from one format or the other (yes early adopters might buy two players instead of waiting for a single player able to read both
)
But I doubt Microsoft will release a blu-ray player as they are part of the DVD-alliance.
Anyway, currently I will be in the 20% skipping the player as I still have a standard definition CRT TV.
I wasn’t aware that MS were part of the HD-DVD group, I thought they had just opted to use it out of price and the fact they are not a memeber of the Blu-ray Squad, but hey, learn a new thing every day, go figger.
Well I made a time machine last week and have been trying it out this week. I went to the future…and its pretty grim. Neither blu-ray nor HD-DVD made it. In 2007 a giant conglomerate of consumer electronics companies brought out SuperDVD tm and sold players for $4.99 and writers for $9.99 and gave away the blank media for free. The public went nuts over it natch, and BR and HD-DVD were assigned to Video2000 history. Nintendo won the next console war with the Wii in the end selling over 400 Trillion units(in 8 galaxies) becoming the largest corporation in the universe, M$ and Sony came in 2nd and 36700th respectively. The Raiders had won every superbowl for the last 20 years. Mutants are the new Gays. And China was bought out by India(now more powerful than the U.S) and was leveled and now is the galaxies 3rd largest Mall. We were conquered by hippy loving aliens.
Curry was the Dutch premier, Rival24 was his chief of staff. And I finally did buy PS3 in 2010 for !100.5 million(! the closet symbol for the currency in the future) and although that sounds like a lot its actually about 10euros. ¬_¬
Can’t I have the US?
Nah you wouldn’t want it! They pissed God once to often and he smited em but good(with Britain, Japan and surprisingly France’s help) And besides Holland were the 2nd most powerful country after India.
mostly down to u I might a$$ kissingly add.¬_¬
I apologise for the F’d up tense in that message from the future. It hurts my head trying to explain how its past for me but the future for you. .
Am I still alive in the future?
Yuh ur running Scotland(with an iron fist I might add).
That is what i’ve been trying to tell people all along, is that Sony isn’t trying to suck peoples’ money, it’s just the system includes next-generation technology which comes with a heftier price. My only gripe about this post is the very first sentence. HD DVD Drive takes the internet by storm because it sells out on Amazon? That’s the funniest claim i’ve ever heard. As far as i know, amazon doesn’t impact much of the internet. Theres a million popular other sites that sell things. I don’t think Amazon will hold a million HD DVD drives so I don’t think it’s a fair claim because there are 6 million people with 360s. I’m sure most of them don’t even know about the HD DVD add-on yet. Gameplay? Never heard of the store Gameplay.
I would get it if it worked with 480p, HD really hasn’t broke the market in Europe yet, and you know what the UK’s like with new technology…
play.com are taking preorders, amazon uk just asking for your email to notify you when its available
dunno about anywhere else that might sell it uk wise
Speak on brother, I totally agree with this article.
Although you must take something into context.
Day 1 HD DVD // Blu ray there are f all movies to buy or watch. There isnt as much need to buy an HD DVD player yet. So the system 360 is still the best option for a next gen platform.
You do get a great deal with PS3, in comparison with 360, but again its basic economics…
PS3 wants you to pay $600 now!
While 360 we already have speant the $400 last year (launch) and therefore should have money this Xmas to buy an add on. The costs might be the same, but your spreading out the burden over 2 years
Sony should take note, HD DVD will prob out sell PS3 on launch (if there are 500,000 units avalible)
MS really need to have at least 3 million HD DVD ready on launch.
Its all about the choice man!!!
Oh yeah don’t forget you need to pay $100 for a decent HDMI cable for the PS3!
Cost to use PS3 with HDTV: $700 (in USA)
Well I still don’t really see the HD-DVD and Blue-Ray content out there at levels to drive any kind of hardware sales.
I already get HD movies from my cable company, and with a HD-Digital recorder your set.
I still dis-like the external 360 HD-DVD option though, I wish they had found a way for us to send in or visit local locations to switch the internal drive for a HD one when need be. Or had built it so the drive was removable by user easily.
Anyways, at least we all have the choice in this case.
I’m still laughing at the fact that the PS3 controllers have a NON replaceable battery inside.. lol… Regardless if they will fix it for free, Too funny.
Again its all about the choice like kobejonez said!!!
Ask all those 199.99 core owners out there if Microsoft are wrong, then come to the table my friend with your over priced PS3.
Personally I am glad M$ did it this way.
1. no huge price at launch
2. no hd dvd’s available at launch
3. cheap way to get into watching hd dvd movies
Well done M$ you did something right
I stil like the fact that you have a choice. There are a lot of gamers out there that will NEVER buy the HD Drive. Even if it’s just 20% over the long run, that still equals a LOT of gamers who will still spend their money to support their console of choice. I think I’m on the bleeding edge of advanced gamers….I have 3 HD setups, a 100in screen with a HD projector, a 42in HD CRT, and a 32in LCD. I’ve been waiting for HD DVD’s for a long time, and for the fact that I can just spend an extra $200 to get a HD player is great for me. Thats opposed to laying out 500 plus for a stand alone player…HD or Blu-ray. But I’m not the average gamer. The average gamer will see a bargain to buy the 360 at a lower price and still be a part of Next Gen gaming. They wont ever care about HD movies or games…at least not until HDTV’s have the same adoption rate and programmimg choices as regular TV, which will not be for a long while. There’s also the fact that HD DVD, so far , looks like it may win the HD format of choice war. And even if it doesnt, whats to stop MS from adding an external Blu-ray player (or universal) down the line if HD DVD does lose? I think that for the average gamer, and for this Christmas season, MS is better positioned to get the dollars!
Microsoft offers a choice. Just becauase an item sells out doesn’t mean the sustainable demand for that product is high, initial demand for a new accessory or device will always be high.
I can guarantee you that no more than 20% of Xbox 360 owners will ever buy this device; the price is restrictive and many people do not want to be caught up in the middle of a disc war that has no clear winner yet.
MS offers the choice, it does not force you to buy the drive if you have no use for it. I never watch dvd’s on my Xbox 360 as it is. Because I have a real dvd player; I use my 360 for gaming which I imagine most people do.
I really have not a clue what Rossko is on about in slamming 360 owners over buying this. The criticism leveled at Sony is that they’re forcing you to pay for their new format, and MS is giving you a choice. You don’t even need this thing to play games. Apples to oranges and painfully obvious to me…
Unless he just enjoys the flamebait…
£130 deal or no deal, i am taking the option to buy it and at least when i sell the whole packaged later i be in the right camp as hd dvd is already the only format the porn industry use and they were right when vhs beat betamax in 80’s
Little known fact, although Beta was unsuccessful in the long run it was far technologically superior to VHS. What relevance that has here???
ik think only 40% will get hddvd player
I’m gonna get a Playstation 3…oh wait a minute it got delayed again, no wait, they cut the amount of shipments, no wait, another delay…Thank goodness for XBox 360 so I can utilize my HD TV to its fullest right NOW!!!
The article glosses over choice like it isn’t a big deal. It’s a HUGE deal. If/when I want an HD-DVD player to upgrade my console, I will buy one. I am not forcefed a movie format. I’m not sure I’d call it “stealthy” so much as intelligent. Microsoft gets the movie player money of those than want HD-DVD and the console money of those who don’t. Sony gets neither as a result of going for both.
Are people also forgeting that the ps3 will launch with a compisite lead to keep cost down. That means you will probabley have to spend afurther £50 on a HDMI lead wich takes the price up to £475 and then if you want a game it will be touching £530 .
Wouldn’t worry Rossko.
I learnt a long time ago you will never please all of the people all of the time, which is around the same time it clicked that instead I could probably have an amusing time by pissing off all of the people all of the time.
Mate, I’m not worried. I’ve read all the opinions, and I’m pleased there has been such an active discussion on it! Obviously I can’t please everyone, the worlds a big place! I expect people to diagree with me, all par for the course
Well eventually im almost sure every 360 owner is going to have to buy one. What if they start making games requiring an HD-DVD drive. Sony was right saying that games are going to getting larger than a dvd can hold. So i’m not going to buy one yet. But if the announcement comes that a really bad ass game is coming out and requires an HD-Dvd, I guess im going to have to buy one.
What’s nice about what microsoft did is they don;t force the hddvd player on you like sony is forcing you to get a bluray with the ps3. It easier to get a 360 now and save up money for the hddvd later than wait several months to get both units at once.
I also want a dedicated box. The 360 is loud. I’d rather have a quiet standalone hddvd player.
Personally I will wait until late next year to see if I want a hddvd or bluray. First generations always suck. I still have my first dvd player which I use in a spare room. It can’t handle many of the newer dvds. The same thing is going to have with these new formats.

i completely agree..
oh wait this is what EVERYBODY is saying in this topic and you are just repeating everybody’s opinion to make it yours.
anyway i dont know about the hd dvd i know for surethat Fnac a very large multimedia store is supporting BluRay because it has (according to them) much more big company supporters (sony,LG, etc.)
out of topic: now that i know that the moded x360 are not bricked with the fall update i’m off to moding my 360. i cant wait to download all of the games i’ve missed..
the difference with MS is we can handle the financial pain in multiple parts. With PS3 its one big chunk up front whether we like it or not. I prefer the MS way because I prefer to upgrade over time.
same reply to you..For God’s sake STOP MAKING THE SAME COMMENT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.. WE GET IT!! MICROSOFT SPREADED THE COST WHILE SONY DIDNT….JESUS!!!
I didn’t read all of them. I am glad you get it.
It’s lot easier to sneak the purchase of two lower priced items past The Wife than one large one. We call them stealth purchases.
i think xbox 360 without hd dvd was a great idea as it gave us a chance to save more money for a hdtv to play our gorgeous games on and now we can save for the hd dvd if we realy want it
Do anyboby know if you can play Xbox 360 games on the HD Drive?
