Bigger Xbox 360 Hard Drive - rumour #342

It seems that the hard drive rumours surrounding the Xbox 360 are showing no signs of slowing down. With one rumour behind us, another has already surfaced. Plaid Ninja has captured a picture from an Xbox 360 Press Event showing a hard drive with 70GB’s of free space.

A bigger hard drive on the way?

Whilst we wait patiently for Microsoft to once again deny the existence of a bigger hard drive, we’re hopeful that something may be announced in the near future. With the announcement of the Video Marketplace, the need for bigger hard drives is becoming all the more apparent. So much so that I personally believe it’s no longer a matter of if, but a matter of when will it be available?

Although the image above shows 70GB free, the actual size of the disc can’t be determined. Who’s to say that 180GB’s aren’t already in use? That would make it a whopping 250GB in size, one can only dream… Also, the presentation may have well used a debug kit which are known to have bigger hard drives.

Update: InsaneBastard has kindly advised that should the hard drive have space already used the bar underneath the drive would be partly filled, which it isn’t in that picture. You learn something new everyday, thanks for pointing that out!

you know, both these hard drives have been spotted at MS events. it really isn’t a stretch of the imagination to see that MS would manufacture larger HDD for xboxes used at events as they need to show more stuff off … it doesn’t mean they will roll them out to market.

but maybe they will.

“Yawn”… yeah of course there is gonna be bigger hard drives… 99% already need mores space… 20GB is not enough.. especially with the push for more downloadable content.

What am i meant to do, buy 3 20Gig HDs… i think not!..

Now lets get some REAL info, like pricing!

Microsoft probably wishes that 360 owners will willingly pay $100 for every additional 20 GB of info they wish to store on their 360’s. More likely they hack external third party harddrives.

“Who’s to say that 180GB’s aren’t already in use?” if that were the case, the bar underneath the drive would be partly filled, which it isn’t in that picture. So either the 360 doesn’t detect the disc correctly, or it’s a smaller drive (80 perhaps). I’m guessing the latter…

MS should release an update that allows us to save games to a USB plugged in flash drive or something. You can get a 200GB mini usb harddrive quite cheap at the minute

It would be nice, but it won’t happen… It’d be too easy to pirate content, as you’d be able to copy everything back to a PC and then share it over P2P…

MS have a good way of getting you to buy one piece of hardware then soon enough tempting you with better. I had bought 3 crappy wire headsets before I even knew the wireless was coming out in the UK. I have that now and it’s great. How long do you think it’ll be before we have to upgrade our hard-drive to a better model, and before long there probably be some super new 6 megapixel high def live vision cam.

Two of the pixels on my camera are dead, thought it was a bit much to take it back to the shop for that reason though.

by law you get a 12 month warranty in the UK compared to the US where it’s 3… if your wired headset breaks (as they do coz there cheap ass!) phone the MS customer support and they will send you another one for free… as many as you need to take you past 12 months!…

on that pick - doesn’t the hard drive have 40GB enscribbed into it

Debugkits have bigger hard drives. All rumors this year have been based off debugkit screenshots thus far.

gotta give ms credit challenging iTunes/iTV with a gaming platform and raising the bar for PS3

Comment by Fanappy on 2006-11-07 14:10:48 | Reply

but yeah a new hdd will be needed

Comment by Sean on 2006-11-07 14:16:46 | Reply

Microsoft take dev/debug kits to events, and they have 80Gb HDDs. So, that pretty much explains this… again.

a HDD announcement wouldn’t be a suprise now, with the video downloading.

so you cant plug in a usb hard drive?? and if not what about that datel transfer kit to send info to your pc and share over the web??

You can plug in an USB drive, but only for media playback. You cannot store Marketplace downloads, Xbox Live profiles or game saves on non-official storage devices.

and again..RUMORS=PHOTOSHOP=BULLSHIT=DONE BY SOME NO LIFER WHO LIKES TO TRICK PEOPLE..

and why they would make 70gb?? thats odd number.. if they do release new hdd..its gonna be 60gb

If the current one uses 7GB of memory for system use and that one is genuine, then it’s most likely an 80GB drive after formatting is taken into account.
It would be good if it were true though considering the fact that they want their movie downloads system to take off… I can’t see how that’s possible with 13Gb at the minute.

Comment by steggles on 2006-11-07 14:45:37 | Reply

An 80gig formatted drive, with that backwards compat / cache partition. That would leave roughly 70gigs left to play around with.

erm…with the updated message. I have the usual 20GB hardrive which didn’t even show as partly filled until I got some arcade games on it. It wasn’t until I was at about 12GB free did I see coloured fill on the hdd mem screen. This could have been an 80GB drive in the picture with 5GB reserved as usual and another 5gb on the disk. 5GB out of 80GB is only 4% which probably wouldnt be enough space usage yet to make a difference on fill.

Devkit??! They come with 80gb

Just so everyone knows, in case you missed it, they’ve already announced a 100GB HDD.

And even if you’re not willing to purchase one of those, remember this: once you’ve purchased something on marketplace, you can always download it again in the future, free of charge.

THAT you can read on major nelson.com in the comments section, he has a red colour around his comment so that mean’s he is more then just an member of majornelson.com

That was debunked.

Quick reminder for those out there if you didn’t know…The 360 hardrive is preloaded with some videos, and if you delete them you’ll get about an extra 1.5 gigs. Most people aren’t aware of this, just thought I’d bring it up.

Comment by El $corpio on 2006-11-07 17:31:37 | Reply

I’d guess it’s supposed to be an 80GB drive because you can hardly see anything in that bar underneath

During the Mt. Dew Game U promotion the console next to the one i was playing was not playing games but was froze on a screen that said 56.62GB free. When I asked about it the guy unplugged it so i couldnt ask any more questions.

They really do just need to let you use a 3rd party hard drive or your computer.
