Survey says: loads of juicy rumors

Certain Xbox Live subscribers got an e-mail today asking for their participation in a super long survey earlier today. Normally surveys like these are boring, there’s a reason certain companies pay you to fill them in, but this one was rather interesting. It asked participants how interested they were in certain first party accessories and Live features. Among the subjects was a web browser, a joystick specifically designed for Xbox Live Arcade games, a mini-keyboard you can plug into your controller for text messaging and a black ‘premium’ controller. Hit the jump for the most interesting excerpts.

New 360 controller?
New schtick?
  • How interested would you be in buying an Xbox 360 branded mini-keyboard plug-in device for your controller to make text messaging and chat easier, assuming it would cost between $19-$29?
  • Paying per song (~$0.99/song) to download music to your Xbox 360 hard drive from a music service. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.
  • Paying a subscription per month (~$14.99/mo) to stream any and all music to your Xbox360 from a library of over 2 Million songs. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.
  • Paying per video (~$19.99/movie, $1.99/TV show) to download standard definition full movies and TV shows to your Xbox360 hard drive
  • Renting movies (~$3.99/movie) that are downloaded in standard definition to your Xbox 360 until you watch them and then are deleted
  • Paying a subscription per month (~$5.99/mo) to access 10-20 internet radio stations streamed to your Xbox 360. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.
  • How interested would you be in using an integrated Xbox 360 Web browser that would allow you to access and browse the Internet over your Xbox Live connection?
  • How interested would you be in participating in beta tests for upcoming games if they cost an additional incremental fee?

While these are all very interesting questions they still don’t guarantee that this stuff might actually happen. That said, Microsoft isn’t asking you about web browsers and ‘premium’ controllers because they’re bored and it’s safe to say that we’ll see at least one of these products if the demand is there.

We removed the link to the survey since it may be linked to the person granting us the survey, and there seems to be an NDA attached to it right now which wasn’t there at first. It’s got usual Microsoft security though, allowing you to deeplink to later questions so recipients can access the information without consenting. Nice one.

Comment by Nekro on 2006-11-07 23:51:29 | Reply

I agree, it needs a 6 button layout for a starters.

It’s a fucking concept sketch… Do you really dount they will get it right before it would go into production…. c’mon guys, comments like that are a waste of space… And I don’t think the survey question was “Do you think this joystick looks great, or looks like shit?”

Comment by karma on 2006-11-08 13:20:37 | Reply

It’s Microsoft, of course they’ll get it wrong.
And fuck off btw.

I’m defo getting the black pad if it stops me from issuing incorrect orders in GRAW, R6V, NFS and any other game that uses it as 4 extra buttons.

Release a larger HD already M$, sh!t come on !

Comment by Julio on 2006-11-08 02:55:31 | Reply

All agreed say ‘aye’. D-pad blows harder than Paris.

You can already stream music for free, depending on what station you’re after (theres an article on my blog/website if you’re interested).

The black does indeed look sweet, and yeah like the others have said, I’d much rather one that doesn’t stick or give me issues.

Totally uninterested in the subscription services, but they won’t be around in .au anyway.

I wouldn’t mind the keyboard though, although you’d think a normal bluetooth one would be nice.

backlit controller and a web browser!!
it’s christmas in november!

Sounds like they’re trying to gauge if people would be interested in the Zune Marketplace on the 360.

“Paying a subscription per month (~$14.99/mo) to stream any and all music to your Xbox360 from a library of over 2 Million songs. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.”

The above comment was based on this quote. :)

cool black controller

Comment by Mystakill on 2006-11-08 04:51:42 | Reply

Why would changing the color bump the price up $10-20? The prices should be dropping because of the volume of sales.

I’ll stick with my $4.99 per month Yahoo! Music subscription, because I can stream or download to my PC.

$19.99 per movie is ridiculous for virtual content. DVDs cost less, look better, and provide more content. I’ve already got a DirecTiVo, so paying more to watch TV sounds pretty ludicrous.

I’ve been streaming for free on XBMC for years. Why pay for it? (FWIW, I don’t understand why people pay for XM or Sirius radio either…)

All of this price gouging is getting annoying. Volume sales & digital distribution should *lower* costs, not increase them. Greed sucks.

gimmie, keyboard and mouse support, allow me to surf the web, and play first person shooters with it. Let me choose the keyboard and mouse I will use.
I like those black controllers, there should be a trade in offer for both the controllers and console so I can get both in black which would match the rest of the theatre components. After the warrenty is up I may take it into my own hands and paint the console myself.
Not to get completely out of subject for this site or this article, satillete radio is bomb. If you have a universal receiver with a docking station in your house, car, work and a protable boombox and listen to it everyday including Howard Stern (given your a fan of Howard), then you might think its worth having. Being able to drive any where in north america and canada without loss of reception is pretty F*ing nice. I have a full 80g ipod, and probably twice that in total mp3s, but I prefer listening to the sat radio, its worth every penny for the fresh content, no commercials on the music channels and about a minute every hour or so with Howard’s channels.

Comment by Stonie on 2006-11-08 07:26:43 | Reply

M$ already said that keyboard and mouse combinations for games on the 360 would be a no-no, any keyboard would be disabled for games and useable for the browser and text messaging.

Also of note, an article done some months ago stated that tests being done on a game that was playable between 360 & PC, the people playing with controllers on the 360 were constantly owning the people using keyboard & mouse on the PC.

well, it is written slightly improved d-pad. I would have preferred massively improved.

Comment by NOrderOnlyCHAOS on 2006-11-08 11:01:26 | Reply

agreed. Slightly just aint good enough.

The original xbox pad had a fine d-pad, but on the 360 pad it feels weak and cheap!. and is un-usable, so more than slightly please!…

Those black controllers are either:

A) Horribly Photoshoped (I could probably do a better job) by MS to show us an example of they would be like
B) Horribly designed
or
C) Designed by the same guy that came up with the “Sony: The Most Shiney Console… EVER!” idea

I want to see a new premium black 360 with a built-in HD-DVD drive, which is quiet and doesn’t have a massive power brick . That would be cool.

I think that it is better if you can upgrade your gold account for the services that they might be offering, something like a
goldcard plus that you can buy in the stores.

Example:
standard Gold prepay card, offers the things you can do now with gold.

Gold prepay card plus, that offers everything you can do now. But with the radio stations and downloading music.

what i don’t like is the price. If you want to buy the movie $19,99 for that price i can buy 3 movies on dvd.

Also the price of renting is higher. $1.99 for the older movies and $2.99 for the recent movies.

Yeah I need a good arcade joystick for the 360. (like X-arcade one)

I really want those sexy black controllers! No more fingers sliping off, ect.ect, and the improved d-pad..excellant. sign me up!

I would internet radio if I could choose what station I wanted to listen to. And not from a MS approved list either.

I meant I would like internet radio.

a.. How interested would you be in buying an Xbox 360 branded mini-keyboard plug-in device for your controller to make text messaging and chat easier, assuming it would cost between $19-$29?

Fascinating — a controller plug-in to leave a USB port free. I’d say “Very interested”

a.. Paying per song (~$0.99/song) to download music to your Xbox 360 hard drive from a music service. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.

Hee hee. MS thinking of using an iTunes style service for Zune? Until they work the bugs out of the Zune, I have no interest.

a.. Paying a subscription per month (~$14.99/mo) to stream any and all music to your Xbox360 from a library of over 2 Million songs. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.

I’m not much of a music guy. At least, not enough of one. Pass.

a.. Paying per video (~$19.99/movie, $1.99/TV show) to download standard definition full movies and TV shows to your Xbox360 hard drive

I assume that $20 is for all year round. (Please notice - standard def). Hm. I’d have to think about it.

a.. Renting movies (~$3.99/movie) that are downloaded in standard definition to your Xbox 360 until you watch them and then are deleted

God no. Too much for standard def.

a.. Paying a subscription per month (~$5.99/mo) to access 10-20 internet radio stations streamed to your Xbox 360. You would be able to use this service while playing a game.

Microsoft wants to be Sirius. LOL

a.. How interested would you be in using an integrated Xbox 360 Web browser that would allow you to access and browse the Internet over your Xbox Live connection?

Depends. Free? Definitely.

a.. How interested would you be in participating in beta tests for upcoming games if they cost an additional incremental fee?

You want me to… pay YOU… to beta test your games? Are you out of your f—ing minds. I already have to “beta test” buggy PC games after release. (rolling eyes) God NO.

Comment by Nizno on 2006-11-09 17:39:53 | Reply

Maybe the extra cost in the black controller will be a matching, black, rechargable battery.

@ Jonah Falcon

I agree with you 100% about the Beta testing… What the sh!t… hell no. i’d beta test for free but will never pay to beta test buggy crash-prone test software. Nope. Any one who does is an @$$

everyone’s talking about controllers when the big deal is M$ prepping more ways to milk it’s live users… $20 for Standard def movies that I can ONLY watch on the box when I can buy DVDs for $10 or less, rip to my hard drive and stream to my Box. Wait… aren’t we already paying a subscription fee for Live…? This crap should come free for those who pay the yearly subscription… what a rip… oh but the controller is cool…
