Region free games update; Gears included

In what is great news for anyone outside the US, it is safe to order Gears of War from an import website, as the game has been confirmed to be region free. Not only that, but the Special Edition is too, as is Tony Hawks Project 8! An excellent time to be a European gamer then (for once).

In what is quite frankly sad news though, is that on the same website, they confirm that History Channel Civil War is not region free, meaning us Europeans will have to wait. That’s if the game even gets released over here at all. I hope it does, because it looks like a game that needs to be played, just because it isn’t another World War Two game. But, if World War Two is your preference, then Call of Duty 3 is also region free.

But you can now all head over to Play-Asia.com and join Nino in the massive race to own Tony Hawks first (since Play-Asia is yet to be closed down by Sony). This will probably be the best way to get it if you are not in America, and it will be considerably cheaper there too, saving you well over £10. Even better if you order the Special Edition of Gears, since they are always more expensive, at least in the UK.

Thanks to GrandHolyKing for pointing it out in the comments section. Next time, you can also try the News Submit!

Don’t bother, I’ll probably own THP8 before you ;)

Lol, I’m not even getting it!

I was talking to the general public Ross, go to bed :P

Damn, I thought you might be! I know why you want me to go to bed… :P

I won’t be buying THP8… don’t really like skate games…

Though CoD3 and GoW sound very good…

Not to sound like a complete idiot, but is this region free or not? Why is it “great news for anyone outside the uk” when surely its great news for us brits as well! We can get it cheaper and yet probably still at the same time (or earlier maybe)than the official release.

maybe its just to early for me. Back to sleep …. ZZzzzz

Congratulations. You spotted my deliberate mistake. I really meant the US, but wondered what peoples’ reactions would be if I put UK. *cough*

Go to bed!

(P.S. Thanks, slight error there ;))

Great news for European gamers would be that they (’The man’)have decided not to use Europe as a place to shit on and release the games at the same price and the same date as the rest of the world not make us dig for scraps from the rest of the world and expect us to be thrilled about it.

Comment by NOrderOnlyCHAOS on 2006-11-08 15:21:18 | Reply

I think GOW is region locked, they sell NTSC and PAL versions… that seems like 2 different regions to me?

Comment by not much chop on 2006-11-08 15:39:22 | Reply

if thats the case then they are not really region free are they? it sounds as if their not sure because they dont have it in stock i ordered one so now im thinking i should cancel it while i can

Comment by NOrderOnlyCHAOS on 2006-11-08 15:49:22 | Reply

on the vgplus blog it say its region free, but they don’t give much information on what was tested..

The NTSC version is onsale, but PAL isnt - via PlayAsia… I was thinking of sticking in an order myself, but it will probably take as long anyway to get here, so i’ll just wait!..

If this is region free, i’m sure there would have been more fuss!… as people in the UK don’t wanna wait!… - i would have pre-ordered and got a US one of ebay weeks ago!

I’m just going to pick it up on release day from ASDA (suprisingly cheap for games! 39.99 for normal, 44.99 for special edition). That way i’ll be guaranteed english manuals and such too.

ASDA and TESCO always do the games a little bit cheaper. You should also check out HMV, they are doing a game rewards scheme. When I joined I got £10 off Saints Row, and then you gains points for more money off!… may get you a decent deal!.

On PlayAsia only the NTSC-J version is available, it says NTSC-US not available until the 13th, with PAL-EU available on the 17th.

So if the NTSC-J version will work on a PAL xbox, what about the language, would it be in English or Jap? (in game, not the bothered about the manual>)??…

Comment by phusebox on 2006-11-08 18:01:37 | Reply

i believe vg plus confirms only that the US version is region free, maybe the JAP isn’t… so stop sending people to play-asia.com

Comment by Domm3l on 2006-11-08 18:22:57 | Reply

What’s with the Sony closing Play-asia bit? Play-Asia chickened out long ago and is not sending any Sony related stuff (PSP or PS3) to European customers.

So they have nothing to fear from Sony.

ok, i have the NTSC-J version, my version is the Chinese/English version , as far as i know the manual is in Chinese and English. The game itself is in English.

ordered mine via videogamesplus.ca and its on it way !!! superb i be chainshawing in no time lol

so does the NTSC-J version work on PAL consoles?? i can’t find any confirmation of this!

Comment by james on 2006-11-10 04:35:56 | Reply

yeah i cant find any confirmation either. doesnt make all that much sense to me that the US version would be region free and not the other versions aswell…. waiting for play asia to get it in stock before i order.

Comment by tralla on 2006-11-10 07:10:30 | Reply

According to Play-Asia.com, at least the NTSC-J version of Gears of War seems to be region protected. Sadly that version is also the cheapest one, much cheaper than the NTSC-U/C and PAL versions :(
