Gears of War’s DVD only the beginning

Epic VP Mark Rein says that Gear of War “is just the beginning!” on the official Gears forums. Rein promises that the title gets the typical post-release support Epic is known for. The company has a long history for releasing content and patching their games to keep the community satisfied and they’re planning to do the exact same thing with Gears. According to Rein, “multiplayer content and functionality is on the way”, and judging by their previous efforts, they mean it.

The reaction to Gears of War has been better-than-outstanding. We’re extremely happy that everyone seems to love the game! More Gears of War multiplayer content and functionality is on the way.

It has become pretty clear to us all that Gears of War will undoubtedly be the biggest selling game in Epic’s 15-year history. With a game that has such a wide appeal it is also clear to me that we’re touching a lot console gamers who have never experienced what it is like to buy a game made by Epic Games.

Console customers, for the most part, are used to buying a game and that being, pretty much, the end of what they can expect for that game. That’s not how Epic Games works. We have a long-term history of supporting our games well after release. Since the very first Unreal Tournament game we have had a track record of excellent post-release support.

We’re going to support Gears of War and we’re going to make improvements and enhancements for it.

Right now we don’t have an exact release plan for this but we’re absolutely listening to you, our customers. Keep posting in this forum. Let us know if you find any problems. Let us know what you love and what you don’t love about the game. We’ll do out best to keep you happy playing Gears of War for years to come!

Epic has a history of releasing excellent bonus packs for their Unreal Tournament games and those were always free. We can only hope Microsoft doesn’t push them to charge money for it but since they’re publishing it’s their call.

Only a few more days ’till Gears gets released in Euroland but retailers might have it a bit early for you if you smile nicely. Be sure to tell us in our forums if you got lucky.

Epic has a history of being very nice to customers, and I guess that’s why gamers are so loyal to them.

As long as the extra content is good (and not just something held back from the origianl realease - Lumines take note!) then I don’t mind paying a (resonable) price for it.

Yes - Epic are the exact opposite of EA - they release innovative, fun games AND support them well - long after launch day.

Fingers crossed that Gears brings in a shed-load of money for Epic and that their Empire & philosophy will grow.

I knew it, I just hope we’ll see more multiplayer modes & maps, new SP acts and maybe some new weapons this year

Gears is the best game in years for me. I LOVE this title. Funny how you mentioned inovative after that EA moron from Montreal said it brought nothing new to the table. Idiots.

I really hope de DLC is free this time around, not that I’m too cheap to buy anything but a lot of my friends don’t buy any DLC and the online community gets split up just like in GRAW…

hopefully we’ll get paid and unpaid dlc’s i mean the feature packs for multiplayer should be free…. and perhaps some free new maps… but i wouldnt mind paying a few bucks for a pack of some good multiplayer maps… the ticket is releasing a good set of maps for a low cost that everyone will want them…

I think that a low cost is feasible. Enough copies of Gears have been sold that a $3-5 mappack with 5+ new maps is cheap (for us), and would easily sell to the many hundreds of thousands (millions?) of addicted gearheads.

win, win … we can get cheap maps, and they a.) make money, and b.) further hook us into the franchise …

I think they should just make gears of war 2 and release it next year as an expansion rather than nickel and diming us to death. It annoys me…

I’m willing to pay a fair price for more maps or other stuff (and I haven’t even played online yet). But I think the Halo2 release style works well — charging at first but then making them free after a few months. That way the community isn’t fragmented by haves and have-nots.

Just to mock EA, Epic could release a “roster update” for Gears — different uniforms, new names for the same characters, etc. And then not charge much for it.

Gears isn’t perfect, but it’s one of the very few games that I think is worth $60. I don’t have any problem giving Epic a little extra cash for more content when the game is this fun, well-crafted and graphically beautiful.

how about live camera surport

Comment by ds on 2006-11-14 19:23:32 | Reply

I hope so.. its on the unreal3 engine so the camera support should be easy to add and would definately vary the game a bit online

Gears rocks, and Epic is a company for the gamer. Their history proves this.

Fix the clunky lobby and add Clan support. I will be happier than ever…

You’ve only got to look at the UT franchise to know that Epic are committed to post release support. And they listen to what the fans want so if you want something in the game head over to their forums and make your voice heard. Personally I want this game so bad I would beat up a teenager.

yeah, definately more maps, more weapons maybe?
and an Act would be cool.

more skins for the Cog or aliens would be cool.
(from previous Epic games?)

anything they do would be awesome.

this game has really blown me away.

Take the weapon pick-ups out of Multiplayer games! I hate racing for the sniper rifle or the grenade launcher, it takes away from the tactics. Give me frag grenades from the start w/standard weapons and we are good 2 go! A capture the flag mode would be nice as well, possibly a playable beserker???

You Pussy.

“takes weapons out of the multiplayer games”
Thats would be wierd… and if everyone would start with grenades games would end fast and everyone would just stick it on each other but what 908peruvian has the smartest idea what to put in a game
