Major Nelson promises to fix the Video Marketplace
Whilst not all of us can access the recently released Video marketplace (which is only available in America at the moment) it seems Microsoft have had good reason to only try this service out in one region - because it is so popular it is crippling their servers.
Major Nelson has personally apologised for all the fuss and assured us all that he and his team are hard at work trying to fix the problem. The good old Major had this to say on the matter:
I just hung up on a conference call on this issue, and I wanted to post an update. As you know, we have been experiencing technical difficulties associated with the extremely high number of downloads from the Video Marketplace service over the past 24 hours. We understand these technical issues have resulted in a very unpleasant experience for our members, including extremely slow downloads or not receiving the content they purchased. We’ve made progress over the past 24–hours, and the team is dedicated to fixing the issues and continues to work as fast as they can around the clock to get the service running as seamlessly as you have come to expect. We strongly encourage all folks who have experienced an error message or did not receive a download they purchased to call customer support at 1-800-4MYXBOX. I also want to mention that if you see the ‘Points have been deducted from your account…’ message when you are trying to download free content, we are NOT deducting points. Thanks for your patience, and please know that the team is prepared to make things right for those affected, including refunding Microsoft Points where appropriate and as quickly as possible.
If you are having problems or have questions, you may want to head over to the Video Markeplace forum on Xbox.com. Members of the Video Marketplace team are over there answering questions and providing status updates on issues.
Whilst it is reassuring that Microsoft are admitting their problems and working hard to find a solution to them, it is also annoying they did not realise how popular this would be or learn lessons from the early days of live when a mere demo of Quake 4 could be so popular it would slow everybody down. It may also mean those in Europe and Asia might be waiting a long time for the such a clever feature. Let us hope Microsoft fix this problem soon and that we can all enjoy HD movie downloads across the world.

Hell, I am very jealous of the Video marketplace. I would love an HD movie dl service in the UK. Seems I was right when I guessed their servers could not handle multiple regions at once though - they are having enough trouble in the US!
The problem might have something to do with people from other regions downloading too (using silver US accounts)
HD = 6 gb? Why are HD movies 25 gigs then?
These are smaller then regular dvd’s which are 8.5 gb Discs …
HD-DVD movies are 25 gigs I meant. But are 6 gigs on the marketplace.
They are compressed wmvhd videos.
I think HD-DVD uses mpeg2 or similar.
Mpeg2 has high quality video but takes up more room.A 2 hour dvd can fit on 1 cd (not dvd) if

Yo. This is off topic but I haven’t been able to get an answer anywhere. Have any of you gotten the “Disc is unreadable, please clean with a soft cloth” message when trying to play several games? This is my 2nd Xbox which I received sealed in the mail since I’m in Canada (they don’t replace machines like in the US). My problem first started only when i play Fifa 07 online, then it became when I played Fifa at all, now it’s when I play NBA 2K7 as well. Any ideas? The Box is barely 3 weeks old. Thanks!

They’re probably increasing it all now, The bandwidth allowance, the server capacity. Hell if M$ have difficulty sorting something like this quickly then they just wouldn’t be M$. Sucks to hear that people were not getting stuff they ordered though.

That almost certainly has nothing to do with the availability of the service. The reason that it is only in the US is likely due to licensing.
Movies and television programs are licensed to distributors or networks in the respective country. Microsoft hasn’t licensed the content for Canada, UK etc. by signing deals with the local distributors.

Why would ANYONE call this service “stupid” or “unnecessary”. You can’t tell me that downloading an HD movie is NOT better than Renting one… to rent one, you’d better have bought an HD- DVD player already… that’s an investment
I’m not surprised by this. It’s kind of a Catch 22. If they had the server capacity for the first days or two, than they’d have too much a week from now on when things calm down. Instead, they build capacity based on projections what normal usage would be. Once they get over this initial hump, things will be fine.
I’m 90% into my Poseiden download that I started Wednesday morning.

I’ve been trying to get 4400 ms points back since APRIL!
I bought a couple South Park episodes, and a few Adult Swim’s I pretty much ordered them and let it download over night. The next day I had to download again since it seemed to have cut off over night. When I downloaded each again it only took a few minutes and they loaded and played fine. It is a pretty cool service, hopefully they will add some better movie selections, and make it so I can transfer these to my Windows MCE edition PC for long term storage. Right now only having them on my 360 HD makes me a little uncomfortable buying any more than I have. Plus my HD is pretty much full now, I have to delete all my old stuff. It would be nice to have a HD cleaner that automatically removed old demos and trailers after a month, kind of like auto archieve in Outlook, except just auto delete to make room for the new auto downloadable content. That would be less maintenance on my part.
