Double Dragon coming to XBLA, with co-op

We often give Microsoft crap for stuffing their Xbox Live Arcade with crappy retro rehashes but this time they’re excused from such criticism this time due to the pure awesomeness that Double Dragon is. OXM UK reports that we’ll see Double Dragon on XBLA with enhanced graphics and Xbox Live co-op. The game’s going to be 12.56MB big but other details such as a date and a price have not been disclosed yet.

Double Dragon in the original arcade version

Featuring the brothers Lee as they battle through a post Nuclear NYC, searching for a kidnapped young damsel in distress, you fight against an evil organisation known as the Black Warriors. Whilst trying to rescue the girl and safeguard the secrets of the Double Dragons simetaneously, players will punch, kick and headbutt their way towards a final showdown with machine gun wielding bad boy, Willy Mackey. Oo-er.

The usual price for retro games like these is 400MP ($5) and there’s no reason why Double Dragon should be an exception. What’s also interesting is that Taito did a little research on what their fans wanted to see on Xbox Live Arcade back in October. We wouldn’t be too surprised if Bubble Bobble is announced for XBLA too, judging by the replies on the survey. Taito has a huge line-up of arcade classics and having them aboard doesn’t bode well for people who want to see original titles made by small indie developers on Xbox Live Arcade but the retro fans must be thrilled by this news. Don’t get your hopes up for Double Dragon’s release being tomorrow, OXM says that this week’s title is the Texas Hold ‘Em update, but keep your eye on Xboxic for future updates.

MY THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE AS SHIT, POSSIBLY SHITTER THAN EVERY OTHER ARCADE ‘KLASSIK’ GAME OUT ON XBLA is tingling.

You have the worst taste in gaming ever if you don’t prefer Double Dragon over Gauntlet, Defender and Galaga to name a few. Also, you spelled classic with a K, Double Fail.

NO, maybe I came across a bit wrong, but everytime people claim a “ClassiC” is coming to XBLA, they moad it’s not a port of a speific console, then moan about how it’s crap compared, and then about the D-Pad controls.

Spelt classic with a K for old-schoolness.

sois sois sois sois

Sounds like someone got beat up while playing Double Dragon.

Good news thou. Finally a great retro title. I don’t know why they haven’t worked in a survey into Xbox Arcade… so we could vote on future titles.

I really wish we could vote.

I really liked this game when it first came out in the late seventeenhundreds (or something like that) but the simplicity that was fun then will now probably just ruin the good memories. We need XBL to be split in a classic version and a regular version or have the rate at which games are released sped up heavily…

it’s one of the few games that i can still enjoy on my sms. the screen shots look like a marginally updated sega original and that rocks!

That’s rather small so I’m not expecting much at all.

I wish they’d add some more levels and extra modes with better graphics (along with original gfx)

YWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! my prayers have been heard! got rills on the back of my body

I like Double Dragon but this retro crap has gotta stop! I like the idea of downloading old titles but not in such a heavy frequency. Games like small arms don’t come out enough. Where’s castle crashers?! We were promissed that by December and they better make good!!!

Why don’t they just put up Battle Toads and Double Dragons. I remember playing that on the sega, and I would buy it the first day it came out on the marketplace.
But I might give this a try too.

I WANT FINAL FIGHT. Now that game had Haggar. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to play with a 6ft 6″ muscle man with handle bar mustasche? What, no one? Maybe you’re all Cody admirers.

Oh yeah !! Although Renegade stands the test of time better than DD, I think this is an awesome addition to XBLA retro.

streets of rage was far better

Nice, but what has Taito to do with that? The game is by Technos (just the arcade version was distributed by Taito in America and Europe).

In addition, it was not Taito which made a survey on games to be ported to XBLA, but Empire Interactive. Empire just license games from Taito, that’s all.

Taito themselves have ceased all Xbox360 development after “Over G”.
