Sega strikes a deal with some Aliens
It looks like the folks over at SEGA have once again acquired the rights for video games based on a popular license, now adding Fox’s popular sci-fi movie franchise, “Alien“, into the mix with their recent acquisition of “Iron Man“, “Charlotte’s Web”, and “His Dark Materials”. According to the HollywoodReporter, SEGA will begin development for a series of games on the PC and next-generation consoles, including a first-person shooter and a role-playing game, with one shipping as early as 2008.
So what will separate SEGA’s Alien series from previous releases by both EA and Vivendi Games? Mike Gallo, senior producer at SEGA, claims that the series will make use of the lore and history behind the film franchise as well as other source material, such as the comic books, H.R. Giger’s artwork, and so on. In addition to fan service, they are in talks with actors from the franchise to reprise their roles, including Sigourney Weaver’s “Ellen Ripley” and Lance Henriksen’s “Bishop“. They also make it clear that this license does not include Predator or the rights to the disappointing “Alien Vs. Predator” film.
SEGA want to be taken seriously with this endeavor, perhaps in defense of some accusations that this will result in something similar to EA’s use of film properties (Batman, Superman, Eragon, Harry Potter, etc). Rob Lightner, Vice President of business development at SEGA, states:
“We haven’t finalized anything at this point, but everything is on the table… It’s important for everyone to understand the difference here: We’re taking licensing to the next level with this franchise.”
Will the Alien saga be in great hands at SEGA? Looks like we won’t know the answer until 2008. Until then, what are your thoughts?

Man, I would *love* to see something in the “Alien” universe appear on the 360. Maybe something with Colonial Marines vs. Aliens? Or something that more fully fleshes out the universe of “Alien”? I just hope whatever it is sticks with the gritty realism of the original movies and doesn’t cheese it up.
When was a game based on a movie *EVER* anymore than mediocre at best ? Most of the time games based on movies are ultralame rushjobs, planned by financial analysts who somehow came up with some numbers that convinced a newbie venture capitalist to fund yet another disaster.
Doesn’t really matter what label you slap on a moviegame … they all tried it, they all failed miserably.
The best ones are those that don’t make any attempts at following a movie and instead become (or try to) it’s own entity within a big franchise (see starwars games, lotr games … and those are not that good after all).
The best thing about such games is …. it’s jobs for ppl who need to work, paid in full by venture capitalists who even make money from losing it in the first place, thanks to wonderful things like absurd tax laws
Maybe the graphics will be pretty ^^
Have you played GoldenEye? How about Chronicles of Riddick?
Screw that stuff, Spider-Man 2 ftw.
Well thats 3.
Anymore?
Personally, I think some the Lord of the Rings games have been fantastic. Well, I only played one (The Two Towers, I think), but I loved it.
oops…I see you mentioned LOTR after all.
I dont know about this one this has alot of potential.
I hope they make it scary and not just a lame attempt at it.
Voyager2k, You need a vacation….Or something….
Imagine a game based on the “Aliens” film with a similar gameplay mechanic to Rainbow Six Vegas, with motion trackers, welders and Pulse Rifle etc.
That would be sweet.
My mate mentioned “imagine if an Aliens game had been made by the GoW fellas” this got me thinking, they could really do a great game for the 360 based in the Alien universe (minus Predators)The game should be a survival horror, were you go a simple non military type (ALIEN)…Imagine how creepy that would be.
Then later Marines turn up and you can go one.
And to the person who said Star Wars games are crap, what about KOTOR?
Please show me where I said Star Wars games are crap. I’m not going to quote myself since you can make another attempt at reading and understanding just a few posts above this one. KOTOR is exactly the kind of exception I made, not based on a movie but instead it’s own entity within the franchise.
And as I said, it’s not that good but for fanboys that doesn’t matter, right ? You want to be right, you don’t hear (read) anything else other than your own praises of what you want things to be like.
But go ahead, praise a game that hasn’t even made it yet to the design tables
Hell, no deals have been finalized yet …. but sure, it will rule ^^
A good alien game would be too much like halo
Whatever, Sega is no longer the company it once ways. Have you seen the latest releases in games they have put out? The latest version of Sonic is poor and looks like no one cared to put it through quality control whatsoever. Sega is no longer the company it once was, the games they put out are very substandard, the graphics are all very poor and the gameplay which is most important lacks in any substantial effort. Sega is pretty much dead weight, they need to go back to original ip’s and to the innovative and fun games, although I don’t think parent company Sammy will allow that.
How about B J & The Bear Plz
Voyager, you said “The best ones are those that don’t make any attempts at following a movie and instead become (or try to) it’s own entity within a big franchise (see starwars games, lotr games … and those are not that good after all).”
“and those are not that good after all?????”
lol
