Thanks to Major Nelson, we can bring news of the most played games on Xbox Live for 2006. The chart you’re about to see is based on data from January 1st 2006 to December 29th 2006 and the rankings are based on how many gamertags have played each game.

Any surprises? I can think of a couple. Although most were probably expecting Gears of War to be top of the table, I’m a little surprised myself. The data is based on the number of gamertags playing each game. Considering that Hexic HD is free with every Xbox 360 console, it’s somewhat remarkable that it was beaten by Gears.
Another notable absence is that of the Xbox 360’s football offerings. Having had FIFA 07 and PES 6 make an appearance on the console this year, I’d have thought they’d fly up this chart. I’d have thought wrong.
Last but not least, Viva Pinata isn’t proving to be as popular as we’d hoped. Here at Xboxic we are adamant that it is one of the gaming highlights of 2006, be sure to check our review. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be getting the attention it deserves, put that chainsaw down for just a moment and try your hand at gardening.

Not really, because it goes by the number of gamertags, not the hours spent in it.
Gears of War had so much hype, that I think newborns went out and pre-ordered a copy. Im not saying its the GOD OF ALL GAMES, but i havent met a person who hasnt played Gears yet (i make everyone who comes over play also
) lol

Hexic HD wasnt free with all consoles. It only came with the premium console allready on the HDD. The core console didnt have it
As far as I’m aware, the title ‘Premium Console’ is just something the community has made up to make it easier to distinguish between the two.
The actual two products available are ‘Xbox 360′ and ‘Xbox 360 core’. Therefore the statement in the article, “Hexic HD is free with every Xbox 360″, is in fact true.
Whoa! Gears, a game that came out in November, beat COD2, which has been killing the charts for about 10 months this year? Impressive, most impressive.
Cloning Clyde should be higher up, though. I spend ten paragraphs gushing about it and it only comes out as 19? Fourteen spots under Pac-Man, which I could very well blame for killing my first 360? For shame, people.
Am I the only one in the 360 Community that finds Gears of War, dull?

I feel the same thing, I played it for a bit and didn’t quite find it to be that great of a game. Sure, the graphics are great, but the gameplay isn’t too terribly addicting to me.
What multiplayer FPS isn’t repetitive? I bet I have played 1,000,000 rounds of Counter-Strike in my life it is always the same thing. It is the gameplay that keeps me coming back to something like Gears.

LUMINES LIVE! 20th? Its a surprise more ppl havent even given this game a chance because of it’s price tag. But it is by far the most addicting game ive played sice Halo 2 and yes that includes GoW.
