Leaked image of Xbox 360 version 2? [Update]

Here’s a new one. An image leaked to Engadget apparently reveals a new 360, with different capabilities at it’s rear. Most specifically, it shows an HDMI port, something which millions of 360 owners have been dying for since November 2005. Is this just another story with no backing at all? Technically yes, but there is never smoke without fire.

Update: It seems Xbox-Scene has confirmation that the image is not a fake. Original post and update details inside.

If you cast your minds back to pre-360 days, you’ll remember it had a codename. It’s codename was Xenon. Now, this new one is apparently named Zephyr. Both odd names, so there is at least some consistency.

As well as the HDMI port which is visible in the picture below, there is also apparently the much touted 65nm chip inside, instead of the 90nm chip inside current 360s, meaning heat levels will be reduced. Also apparently included is another item 360 owners have been screaming blind for: a bigger Hard Drive. Engadget say that the HDD is 120GB, doubling the PS3 size (assuming you don’t use your own of course), which will hopefully also be released separately. Engadget do say that they are unsure whether or not the new HDD will come with the new 360 or not. It would make sense to include it, especially if the Movie Marketplace reaches the rest of the world.

All this is great news for those with 1080p TVs or monitors, assuming it’s true. Even if it isn’t, we all know that this is likely to happen, since the current 360 cannot utilise HDMI, only Component and VGA. And the 360 does get very hot, no doubt about that. We heard rumblings last year of a better chip to sort that out. So it is possible that a new, much improved 360 is on its way.

Pricing? Well, I would personally like to see the Core no longer sold, since most people buy Premium anyway. Then push the Premium down to the current Core price, meaning the new 360 comes in at the same price as the now-old Premium. In turn, Microsoft can remove the cap on XBLA games, and everyone can rejoice. As unlikely as it is, that’s what I think should happen.

Despite all this great news, there are many that won’t be pleased about this. Releasing a new console after just over a year of the original release is never a kind thing to do. I’m sure many will quote the analogy of buying a car, then upset of a newer one out in a year, but it feels different for consoles. We’ve seen revisions in the past, with the PS1 and PS2 being made smaller, but that was after five years, not one and a half. The debates could go on forever, but I think it’d be a nice gesture to allow original adopters a cheaper price if they trade in their current console.

Of course, all this might be fake and we won’t see anything of the sort for a long while yet. CES kicks off on Monday, with Bill Gates giving a keynote speech on Sunday. Will we hear more about all this then, since they have already refused to comment on the subject over at 1UP:

UPDATE: What does Microsoft have to say about this? Not much — but it’s not a straight up no comment.

“We have seen all types of claimed leaked photos like this show up online and as a standard policy we don’t comment on speculative items.”

Well, they haven’t denied it, but then again it’s a textbook answer from Microsoft. And until we do, take all of this with a pinch of salt, but hold it close to your heart and hope.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of this either. Way back in July last year there was a similar image, again leaked, and again from a source that the original posters trusted. Could it be that this latest mumbling is following on from that, and as such is at a stage where it’s almost done? Who knows, but Engadget ended with the following line:

But our very kind Xbox insider seemed happy to let us know we’d be able to get them “soon.”

The image released back in July

Don’t forget this is purely rumour and speculation at it’s very best. Nothing is set in stone yet, but if anything does become of this, you know Xboxic will be right on it!

Update

Xbox-Scene have managed to land some photos of an actual Zephyr prototype, which clearly shows the image at the top to be a true image. If you still don’t believe that this is legitimate, there are images below of the motherboard, and a video that confirms that HDMI is now possible.

Another image of the new design. The white marks are to protect the Serial Number

After details emerged about the ANA chip, to the right you can see a new HANA chip. Is it for HD?

ANA…

…and HANA

As you can see from above, there are some key changes. HANA is the new ANA, and I can only guess that HANA is a High Definition equivalent, meaning that ANA is simply analog. What this means is that an HDMI cable will never see the light of day for original 360s, since it simply can’t output digitally. A video showing the new 360 is also more evidence that this is no longer a fake, and we could well be seeing the new 360 soon, as promised yesterday.

Thanks to Danl, xKuDaNaTx, kissmygritz, steave and Ace for submitting this, and thanks to Trigger M4N for starting a forum topic on it. Phew, that’s alot!

i think that msoft will make some sort of adapter for those who purcahsed a 360 without hdmi… r else those consumers will b very pissed.. and they will also release the hard drive separatley…. you can’t change the chip, but that’s about it.. and a lot of people have thought this may include built in wi-fi.. i doubt it.. the whole wireless adapter layout is still on the back.. and a lot of people have also said they might a release a black one like this… microsoft’s whole advertising scheme is white and green.. they can’t just change it to black.. it won’t look right.. about consumers gettin pissed, i don’t think many will, be, as long as they release the hard drive and an hdmi adapter separately… everything should be straight.. if they don’t, there will be a lot of pissed off consumers

and like it says on the forums, the top right of the console says xbox 360 console, so if it was a prototype, it would not say that, and there would be a lot more words and stuff covered up… and the case probably wouldn’t be like a real 360 also.. the top right saying xbox 360 console shows to me that this might be a mod or something of the sort… the person has obviously covered up the serial number, which can reveal a lot of things about a console.. the owner, and when the console was purchased… and if it was a zephyr or prototype or whatever, there wouldn’t even be a serial number

could this be the ‘psx’ of xbox’s? It seems media centric with the larger HD and HDMI port… maybe they should pack in an HD-DVD drive, and charge some stupid ammount.

I call fake, but thats just me.

Why do people seem to say the 360 is noisy because of the processor?

The DVD drive makes the noise, not the CPU fan.

Oops, yeah. I was obviously talking about something erlse that needs to be fixed :P

P.S. Thanks ;)

Pretty old. I wonder why this comes up again

Did you not read my post? I mentioned that.

The June image is mirror-imaged — the USB and Ethernet ports are on the left, not the right. I flipped it left-to-right, rotated 1degree clockwised, scaled to 60% and overlayed it onto the recent image. The line up. These two are definately the same motherboard — atleast the connectors are in the same places.

The Result

Good find! :)

The timing of this leak fits pretty well with the fact the Bill Gates has the CES 2007 pre-conference keynote on Sunday.

Gotta figure that Billy has some reveals for the 360 (last year’s was the HD-DVD drive) … i was figuring that separate HDMI and HDDs might be the news, so a new 360 with both wasn’t too far off.

Bottomline: everyone’s known that MS has had to have had some plans for a larger HDD in the works (they’e been quiet on the subject, but it is reasonable to assume that something was in the works). And *if* they could’ve easily done HDMI with the 1st box then I think we would’ve already seen it in November when the HD-DVD and PS3 came out.

Engadget’s not much on a rumor monger, IMO, so I largely buy this.

Fake.

another thing i wanted to say is that a lot of people who are mad are only mad because of the hdmi…. the hard drive can be added separately anytime, and only if you need/want it… however, the hdmi, unless they make some sort of adapter, can not be added… this is the main thing that makes me and other launch xbox and previous xbox buyers angry..

I would call this a bomb atomic, if it’s true.
but the real quetion is how much it’s going 2 cost.

JUST FYI,

The HDMI 1.3 Spec was not finalized when the XBOX360 launched, nor was it finalized for several months after that. Sony was a leading partner in finalizing this spec (which allows the 1080p output + piracy encryption) and dragged their feet on the process. On purpose? who knows. But rather fishy nonetheless.

So short of it.
Why didn’t MS include the HDMI?
It had not come to fruition yet!

Comment by Sean on 2007-01-06 00:20:14 | Reply

HDMI isn’t required until 2010 or 2011 onwards, by then we’ll have the 360s successor.

I’m still buying a 65nm 360 though. I have multiple consoles in different rooms as my entire family plays games to some extent, so it’s only a matter of time until I pick up a 2nd.

If this is an “Unauthorized” leaked image, then WHY DID YOU PUBLISH IT???.

By doing so, you are contributing to the “illegal” dessimination of CONFIDENTIAL “XX company”/Biz information.

Haha.

“HDMI port, something which millions of 360 owners have been dying for since November 2005″

I’d say that’s more like ‘thousands’.

I imagine this will come with the hd dvd drive and they’ll raise the price of it another $100 and call it the Xbox 360 Ultimate. Hopefully they do drop the Core SKU completely.

Comment by coojo on 2007-01-06 04:42:05 | Reply

millions have been dying for it i mean they say 3/4 360 owners own an hdtv

Comment by billwalls on 2007-01-06 05:38:53 | Reply

I will now be surprised if MS starts to release games on HD-DVD, or Release another 360 with built in HD-DVD…all this just to keep up with the competition.

who cares!?! my 20G HD isnt even half full and my tv supports 1080p through vga and component inputs…most of the people bitching about this (if it is true)are just complaining for the sake of it

Yeah looks like a fake to me, blew the picture up in Photoshop, I saw weird artifacts around the HDMI port.

For now I call it a fake.

i wonder why does the game sites release all this bullshit..its all fake..
how bout people start telling people to make good fakes on 360 and “leak” it..smh at people releasing this to news..

You’ll regret that when it turns out to be true…

Apology? :P

This really doesn’t interest me because I don’t have a HDTV. But if I did, it would just annoy me that I spent E400 on a console to have to spend E400 more if I want full the HDTV experience.

Only if you have a tele that is bigger than about 50 inches. Anything less and you won’t notice the difference. I’ve got a 32 inch tele, and I wouldn’t notice the difference even if it could do 1080p.

You still get the full HD experience with or without the new 360 through component/VGA.

Comment by hazard on 2007-01-06 16:41:07 | Reply

so it turns out to be a real pic, has anyone thought of the fact it might be a mod and nothing more?, do people seriously think that MS are going to release a 360 1.5 with hdmi? i think people with hdmi tv’s would boycott it out of grounds of having to pay full whack for another 360 console, also the other thing to point out that those other pics taken from xbox-scene, a site that dedicates itself on console mods and hack reports. Next we’ll be hearing is xbox 360 ver 2.0 with official green water cooled technology

Comment by hazard on 2007-01-06 16:50:17 | Reply

also the video showing the supposed 360 1.5 claiming that its an official MS upgrade, why are they using an adaptor for the cable?, if MS had really gone out to make a whole new console with hdmi support, dont you think that they’d go as far as to make an official cable???,just a thought.

“Who’s the bigger fool… The fool or the fool that follows a fool”

think about it!!

Unless it comes stright from Micro$$$$oft it’s only a rumour. people should take what they see on these “non offical” sites with a pinch of salt after all there only human like the rest of us and it’s human nature for them to get just as excited(or not) as the rest of us

Comment by sMaCK A h03 on 2007-01-06 19:29:55 | Reply

they used an adapter because they had to use dvi inputs on their tv/projector/lcd or whatever they were using

Looks pretty real to me. I’d definately like to see that harddrive released sooner rather than wait for this revised hardware to release at the same time.

Hazard, they used a computer monitor which only has a DVI connector (also digital) so they had to use an adapter to convert the dvi cable to have an HDMI connector which connects to the 360. Obviously with an HDMI tv, you just use a HDMI cable - no conversion needed; any HDMI cable will work, you do not need an ‘official’ cable if Microsoft will even provide one.

The ONLY reason I started to play a console is because I was tired of having to buy a new $599 graphics card every 6 months when a new game or a new expansion came out. I always felt like I had to be on the cutting edge of technology to get the most out of a video game.

I buy a console thinking that those days are over; I have purchased a stand alone video game unit that I WON’T have to upgrade until the NEXT XBOX comes out 4 years down the road. Sure I was going to buy the nice little gadget that comes out, $50-60 bucks, no biggy.

I want HDMI on the XBOX because I want to free up FIVE cables running to my TV with ONE cable. Is that really a reason for me to want HDMI? Prolly not. I don’t have a reason to really be that upset, but again I have that feeling of NEEDING to be on the cutting edge of technology. Maybe I have personal issues of inadequacy. Maybe my mother didn’t breast feed me, I don’t know. M$ however will break the unwritten rules of the console. A major change like the processor and how the image is sent from analog to digital should not be done. Once again I will have to UPGRADE my console spending possibly another $200 ( Lets just say they give an upgrade option), and I will be at a total of $799. Why did I leave PC gaming?

This is a rumor though right? I am getting upset for no reason. I am sure Microsoft will make the right decision. I am laughing IRL.

this seems to clear things up a bit, he talks about how what we have been seeing at the moment may be just a prototype that MS is playing around with. Of cource he may just be a spin doctor trying to protect an announcement.
