XBLA Wednesday can Pac it’s bags

If you were hoping for a really good surprise for this week’s Arcade title after last week’s disappointment (nothing), then prepare yourselves for some bad news. Ms. Pac-Man will be entering the fray, another retro title to go alongside the almost identical Pac-Man.

This comes as a huge blow for many, since recent talk of Worms being the next game have been all but dashed. Instead we get another retro title, and one that is too similar to its predecessor to be worth the 400 Points they are asking for it. A list of details, in case you didn’t know, is below:

  • Guide Ms. Pac-Man through mazes, munching Pac-Dots and Power Pellets to clear each stage
  • Remains true to the classic arcade version, including ghosts, dot chomping action, and Ms. Pac-Man’s “waka waka” original sounds
  • Full of hilarious antics as you avoid moving fruits and smart monsters through the fun filled mazes
  • Munch a Power Pellet to momentarily turn ghosts blue. When ghosts are blue, Ms. Pac-Man can eat them for bonus points.
  • Play all 255 mazes from the original
  • Free trial demo provides players with the first 2 levels of the game.
  • Gamers can track their high scores on the Ms. Pac-Man leaderboards and strive to garner all 12 Achievements

Ms. Pac-Man used to be a great game back on the Megadrive and in the Arcades. But in today’s day and age, this hasn’t stood the test of time and is downright boring. If, like me, you were foolish enough to purchase Pac-Man, don’t make the same mistake again by getting this. They don’t even mention a two player option on a single machine or over Xbox Live, which is frankly inexcusable. With all the recent Worms news, I was fully prepared to be blowing the crap out of people with a Holy Hand grenade this Wednesday, not munching on some pellets going “Waka Waka Waka”. I’m bitterly disappointed. No-one should be paying for this.

Microsoft better start putting some decent stuff out there soon, before the competition takes over. And the way the competition is going, MS could well be lagging in last if they keep this up.

Ms. Pac-Man will be available on Wednesday the 10th, at 9 a.m. GMT (1 a.m. PST). I beg you, save your points for Worms.

What a piece of shit.
I’m sure MS has a huge list of games waiting for aproval, and they choose such crap. I don’t understand why.

Perhaps the rest is worse? ;) Anyway, Pac-Man should teabag Ms. Pac-Man so badly that she’s cripled for life.

MS is just ASKING to be spanked by nintendo in the arcade area… I mean, less than ONE TITLE PER FUCKING WEEK! COME ON!

Jeez… Then when they do release a game after a while, its this lame retro crap that no one wants.

Sure they’ll make a bit on a decades old game, but at the cost of what? People thinking more about that wii purchase they’ve been considering?

Your entire post is one big contradiction. You go from bashing Xbox for having another retro games, and not enough new games, but then say the Wii is better than arcade when every arcade game on Wii is retro! What an ass.

totally fucking ridiculous

Furthermore, no one is going to buy a system for downloadable retro games. Honestly, is anyone buying a Wii so they can play Sonic the Hedgehog form the Virtual Console, or the Xbox 360 for UNO?

Well, I do know a lot of people who will buy a 360 just to play Settlers of Catan on Live, but that’s the exception. (evil grin)

Arg I hate old games. They SUCK. They might have been fun whenever the only other pass time was throwing cow patties at each other, but today they just bore me. I would like to see more games like Roboblitz and Marble Blast Ultra. Those are 2 simple yet very entertaining games.

“Old games” probably means anything before 1995 for you. (rolling eyes)

“Full of hilarious antics as you avoid moving fruits and smart monsters through the fun filled mazes”

the fruits are bonus points, you do not avoid them, and this game deserves at least a teensy bit of respect. ms. pac-man might not be the mother of modern gaming, but the arcades of yor would not have been the same without her.

I didn’t write that, that is from Gamerscore blog; their fault not mine, but good spot!

You are all a bunch of whiny idiots.

1. I love Ms. Pac-Man. I plunked a ton of quarters on it. Something tells me you weren’t alive in 1982.

2. Are you SERIOUSLY going to base your computer system on XBOX LIVE ARCADE TITLES? “Nintendo has the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Genesis version! Forget Halo 3! We want THAT!” Oh, boy. (rolling eyes)

Comment by Bill on 2007-01-09 04:36:02 | Reply

Well it’s better than Pac Man at least. I was really hoping for Worms!

Comment by Jonah Falcon on 2007-01-09 04:37:52 | Reply

Worms was probably delayed to clean it up. The title I’m drooling over is Settlers of Catan. That can’t come fast enough.

Comment by Bill on 2007-01-09 17:56:49 | Reply

And Carcassone!

In some ways i think 1 a week is to much. Ages ago when they didnt release anything everyone was playing the same games and multiplayer was great. Now there more games some people arnt getting the most out of them and getting multiplayer matches aint easy.
Dont get me wrong, i wont get ms Pacman., but me and people on my freinds list often keep challenging for 1st place on the arcade leaderboards.

“Almost identical to Pac-Man”? What crack do these editors smoke?

Comment by El $corpio on 2007-01-09 07:30:20 | Reply

I guess they just do it to keep Bandai Namco happy

To me it looks exactly like pac man anyway, what’s different about it then (apoart from waka waka & the fact “Pac Man” is “Ms Pac Man”

Comment by Studley on 2007-01-09 10:38:57 | Reply

Haha, you all hate it, unfortunately I’ll be first in the queue to buy it because it’s my girlfriend’s favourite game :/

I’d rather another week go by with nothing.

This (Ms Pac Man) is almost taking the piss. It’s like a big wet kipper in the face…

poor form.

For me, then game looks like Pac-Man too…the same goes for New Rally X, which has been released before christmas and shares the gameplay with pac-man (except the ability to hunt your hunters), so they have 3 nearly identical games on the xbla marketplace.
Who would be such a fanatic to buy this game for 5€/$ if he could get some NES games for the virtual console of the Wii for the same price, for example Excite Bike, which’ kinda limited gameplay is still a lot more entertaining than wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka Pac-Man.
Or in the future Contra III for SNES, which is soooo superior to the Contra for XBLA. We need more new games for XBLA or at least retro games which are the most improved versions of their series, like Contra III instead of Contra, Super Street Fighter II (Turbo) instead of Hyper Fighting, which was way too hard and too lacking in the number of fighters to be worth a buy, we need games which still could sell consoles.
I don’t think Pac-Man could sell a console, while a Tetris could^^.
And XBLA needs more complex games, something like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario World instead of wakka wakka wakka wakka.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time for 10€/$ alone will sell better than all XBLA games together, if it ever gets released on the virtual console.

Yet another gay release. Think of it this way though. Now that it’s out it can’t take up a future release spot.

I still stand by the fact that if they are going to release retro stuff that they need to also release original content the same week.

Comment by RortyCrankle on 2007-01-09 14:55:11 | Reply

I think it’s ironic.
It has to be why would they release the simplest on one of the most powerful games machines otherwise.

Enough of the irony already!!!

…Can’t wait for pong though

Any relation to Jimmy Crankie?

I spent 400MP on Pac-Man for the XBLA guys to give us 90% the same game for the same price. That’s ridiculous. I will be saving my points for another game… a MAD game (and Worms if I have some left over).

Comment by DaffyDuck on 2007-01-09 17:25:09 | Reply

Good news guys, next game will be Heavy Weapon. It is pretty addicting, you can go to capgames site and try the flash demo, you will be hooked.

Comment by x El Scorpio x on 2007-01-09 18:07:56 | Reply

So if these new games coming out, hopefuly soon, are 150 MB (Heavy Weapon), 500 MB (Worms) etc, then how the hell does Microsoft expect the developers to fit the same games in 50MB?

Worms was 500 WITHOUT High Definition graphics so we’ll get a very very limited game…and/or we’ll have to download lots of extra packs
