I have the same ‘problem’ on my VGA monitor. But the reason for the reduction in quality is obvious. Before the patch the game was in 16:9 (even if you set your xbox resolution to 1280×1024), but now the aspect ratio changed to 4:3. This means it fills my entire screen, which means that more graphics power is needed. In order to maintain a steady FPS, they probably scaled the resolution down a bit.

Oh? I use a VGA cable and the picture actually seems better after the update.

On a widescreen 19 inch monitor, that is.

Well, the strange thing is i have to run it on 1280×1024 widescreen, my monitor can’t handle 1368×720, has something to do with the aspect ratio I guess. Anyway, I’m not complaining.

A friend of mine uses a 4:3 21″ PC monitor and before this patch the borders were 3″ top and 3″ bottom, it was horrendous, now he says it’s sorted and fills the screen he is so chuffed with the patch as he now can see alot better.

At my VGA it looks good.
Its actually better for playing split screen as the monitor is not widescreen and i had to deal with black bars…

But for single, i gotta admit it looks weird..

.::: The problem for VGA-users is that they’ve applied the ‘old’ solution to get rid of the borders. Which used to be changing your 720p-compatible 1280×1024 resolution back to a 480p-compatible one. It was a workaround but wholly unneeded as the squashed look was rather slight and the 720p image made up for it.

But now the workaround is enforced, meaning that on a 1280×1024 monitor the lower 480p is all you can get. Quite simply VGA-users without a 16:9 monitor have been robbed of their 720p signal. You can see the difference easily as the front-end of the game looks ‘zoomed in’ with large options and less breathing space for the elements like it used to have. This is due to the lower resolution leaving less space for the elements which weren’t scaled (the entire picture itself was cropped).

Another tell-tale sign are the cutscenes, which suffer from more profound alias-effects. (The mouse in the chapter 2 Boomer introduction looks plain serrated.)

I really don’t get how this could’ve been approved as a solution. Especially since a 720p image was already possible and suffered only a slight deformation.
It’s like amputating the entire arm for a broken fingernail.

I wonder what Epic themselves has to say about all of this?

Mark Rein should be completly blind. Is annoying how he keeps claiming the game looks as they expected when EVERYBODY (except him) with a 1280×1024 vga monitor can clearly see the game is now blocky and with no AA at all (in addition to use 4 : 3 ratio in 5 : 4 resolutions)

The issue is with 5:4 aspect ratio monitors using the VGA cable. If your monitor is 4:3 you will not see a problem. Mark Rein at Epic claims he tested and sees no problems but he was conveniently using a 4:3 ratio monitor

N3LSON you don´t have a clue about you are talking about. It has nothing to do with the 4 : 3 or 5 : 4 aspect ratio, and I warrantee it would look as bad at 1024×768 monitors as in 1280×1024. The only difference is at 1024×768 the aspect ratio is correct. But both modes look equally blocky and aliased.

Well here is a an idea that might fix the patch. GET AN HDTV. If your going to buy an HD console then first buy an HDTV.

Note 1: Mine looks fine post-patch. I feel for yuo guys with SDTVs that are having problems.

Is the problem only present when using a VGA cable to hook up your 360? Or is the problem when you’re using a SDTV?

How can you have both at once? No SDTV that I know of has a VGA hookup in the back? But nearly every modern HDTV does.

I’m lost. I played gears last night on a 27″ tube, hooked up w/ yellow/red/white composite cables. Looked fine to me.

Just tried the patch on my 20.1″ Widescreen TFT running at 1360×768. It looks the same as before tbh, I’ve got no issues here.

QA seems to be an area where MS or even Epic in this case are lacking in. It shouldn’t have gone out of Epic’s doors, and how the hell did this one pass MS certification I ask?

4:3 resolutions on VGA break in most 360 games. That’s why I have my 360 set to “widescreen” mode and I just adjust the vertical height on my CRT monitor to match 16:9.

Because grenade tagging was way to easy peasy lemon squeazy before. For me the best thing about the patch is the limit on 3 “downs” After all… 3 Americans in anyones game is enough.

Well i don’t have much of a problem with the gaming quality as its still amazing, but ever since the patch there have been to many connection errors with the game. i had never had one beore the patch and now most games i join online gets connection errors. And i know its not just me because everyone in the game gets it too. If they could fix this it would be great

ya ive been in ranked matches where that message came up n i saw two ppl leave, ppl, when you see that message, DONT LEAVE. Its not your connection, it shows up because when one person leaves it slows down the game so the patch brought up that screen to pause the game and re-establish a full connection before it starts again so everyone has a top quality connection.

It’s a good thing, means everyones connetion goes down and up together meaning you don’t get shit like battlefield where you stand and shoot a prone target for about 2 minutes only for them to dissapear as they have had a shit connection and are busy jumping around the map like some sort of epilectic flea.
