Crackdown demo available

A few days ago, the guys over at Microsoft thought it was a good idea to give us the Battlestations Midway demo first instead of the highly anticipated Crackdown. A new date was announced soon after that and it appears that it has finally arrived on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The download is 1.24Gb in size and is of course free of charge, but silver members will have to wait a couple of days unfortunately. The demo will bring you both single player mayhem as online cooperative multiplayer. A lot of people will be downloading this demo so you’d better sign in on Xbox Live fast to give you a head start.

Crackdown

Crime is ‘the new black.” The world teeters on the verge of anarchy. Law enforcement recruitment has plummeted—no one wants to be in the firing line. All forms of policing across the globe have united to form the Agency. But still it’s not enough. The Peacekeepers are barely able to keep what little peace there is.

Desperate times, desperate measures… The Agency is exploiting the work of disgraced scientist Doctor Baltazar Czernenko (rumored to now be in the employ of Shai-Gen). His underground eugenics program uses a near lethal cocktail of cutting edge technology and military grade pharmaceuticals to propel the human race to a whole new level. Now, that same program is being used to create agents of justice: superior to conventional law enforcers in every way, and capable of rapid physiological evolution.

Rival factions—the gangs—are taking over increasing amounts of territory. The Agency is making a last stand in the heart of Pacific City in a high-security compound known as the Keep. Access is restricted and guarded by Peacekeepers.

Around the world, hundreds of thousands of new law enforcement agents will be coming online, each one capable of replacing an entire police force. These potent prototypes are ready, willing, and able to use unreasonable force to wipe all crime from the face of the Earth. With your help, this will be the ultimate crackdown.

The full version of Crackdown will hit the stores February 20th. If you don’t like Crackdown after the demo, there’s still a reason to buy it since the Halo 3 multiplayer beta is included.

Everybody is downloading at moment….so you have to wait a little longer.

Plus the file is 1.24 Gig…even with my 8 MB. con. it takes a while.

And there’s me with a 512kb connection. I may leave this downloading while I sleep tonight.

See, I have a 230.5 MB/s connection (yes you heard that right) and it’s downloading like crap still. i’m sure you’ll not come close to your bandwith max.

I need to wait because I am still at fucking work!!!!!!!!!!

Its good fun, though the time limit is annoying.

Twatting time limit!!! Since when has a time limit EVER been a good thing?

Comment by geekinabox on 2007-01-23 16:54:44 | Reply

Since the developer wanted you to buy the game and not just play the demo all the time.

:)

I’ve had a go on the demo and I found it to be loads of fun!

I’m usually not keen on free romaing games so it’s quite a suprise. This game just feels fantastic and makes you want to play and play and play and play…

Great demo but how that translates into a full game will be interesting. At last no v-sync issues. Smooth frame rate, clean graphics, and a good levelling up system. The one downer which could be different on the finished version is the lack of story or any real structure to the missions, also the shooting is OK but still not great, between SR and GTA:SA.

It seems very polished, much more than I thought it would be.

Comment by Studley on 2007-01-23 18:41:34 | Reply

Who cares about story when the world itself is so fun?

There’s a skip just outside the entrance to the agency, I’ve spent the past half-hour seeing if I can fill it up with debris from around the game world. Started running out of large objects so I had to shoot police and civilians, and dump their bodies in there.

Now I’m going to try the same thing again, but this time filling it with live gas canisters. Then I’m going to stand in the skip, lob a grenade, and see where I end up.

If only real life was this much fun…

20% in 10 minutes. Shaping up so far.

Comment by Rol on 2007-01-23 18:47:43 | Reply

No story or stucture in a demo is fine but you’ll need something more in the full game otherwise you can just play the demo and get as much out of it.

Comment by Studley on 2007-01-23 18:50:27 | Reply

They have got something more in the full game. A Halo 3 beta ;)

Well i don’t know how fast my connection is, it’s only took me about 10 to 15mn to download. the demo is cool as hell and 4king addicted, almost 4king late for work.

psss… i also think it’s better than saints row.

I downloaded the demo, but did not have much of a chance to play with it yet. I will test it out when I get home. This was one of those maybe games I had on my list for this year. So if the demo is really good, I may purchase it.

For the record, I did not like Saint Row, or any of the GTA series, but I loved The Simpsons Hit and Run.

Didn’t much care for this demo at all. It seems like the typical run of the mill shooter but which takes no skill whatsoever. Your character is pretty much invincible and cannot be taken down, so you just get into firefight after firefight holding down the trigger till you kill the enemies. I don’t see how leveling will be any better, it means you just have more waves of enemies to fight but no way to ever lose.

I don’t see any story line here, maybe they didn’t put one in the demo but without a story there is nothing to make this game cohesive.

I’m sure many like it but it certainly is not my cup of tea. The Halo 3 beta test isn’t convincing me either way.

Comment by trj156 on 2007-01-24 01:00:09 | Reply

Me either, it seems almost painfully mindless.

Comment by Americo on 2007-01-24 06:54:20 | Reply

Play it on the harder difficulties. Leveling up is also increased (along with damage and the rest) to speed up the idea of the game. Story was cut out also, they just wanted to show you the basics.

Comment by Mike on 2007-01-24 01:03:37 | Reply

I got a 1,000,000 Mb connection and it’s still downloading like crap, and you all can’t come close to this kind a speed.

I thought this game was pretty sweet

Comment by trance4jim on 2007-01-24 06:07:09 | Reply

This games is lots of fun.I’m sorry but all I had to do was level up enough to throw cars off buildings on my enemies! It was like hulk meets gta.It seems original though.Co-op must be a real blast!Cod3 has live on lockdown!!!!!
I hope this has a decent multiplayer in full version.

I downloaded last night and I like it… a lot!! I was jumping from building to building collecting the green globes and then seeing how far and how high I could go… it was a blast :o) I will be getting this on release, well worth the money, even with the Halo 3 beta!

Comment by po0 on 2007-01-24 11:30:22 | Reply

This game seemed weak to me. Poor graphics, sloppy vehicle control as well. I think this games saving grace will be the co op feature. Co op can make even the crappiest of games good.

If you like just exploring then im sure itll be fun but spending hours doing what is basically nothing isnt my cup of tea.

Comment by Ungreat on 2007-01-24 17:21:31 | Reply

The demo didn’t seem that great when I first tried it as the shooting system is a bit pants.

When I picked it up again I tried jumping from building to building collecting green orbs for agility and fighting hand to hand for strength, and it was a blast.

Free climbing up the sides of buildings to see how high you can get was suprisingly a lot of fun.

Comment by Thryon on 2007-01-24 19:30:24 | Reply

I gave the demo a good one over. It took two games to learn the controls correctly, but once that was done, I found this game a blast.

I like the idea that the game will reward you (level up) based on your style of play. I like beating the thugs in hand-to-hand combat, and doing so made me stronger, that in return caused the hand-to-hand combats to be even more powerful. Also when you level up, more of the game world becomes open to you, as you can now reach new areas of the game previosuly unavailable (like rooftops).

The demo convince me to purchase this game. Good show Microsoft.
