Software update making 360 drives quieter?

According to German site cynamite, debug 360’s have been given a software update by Microsoft that slows down the disc drive speed, meaning playing games is quieter. A revolutionary breakthrough, but will consumers see it?

Chances are we will, perhaps when the Spring update hits. Microsoft always try and have one big thing that everyone wants to see in both the Spring and Fall update. Last Spring saw background downloading, whilst the Fall update saw 1080p made a possibility. So is a quieter drive the next big thing?

Microsoft found a way to reduce the noise of the Xbox360 clearly by a software update. (Their emphasis)

Microsoft delivers since short one a software update to the technical literature, which makes the Xbox360 substantially quieter. The possibility is given by the update to the play manufacturers to drive the drive assembly speed down of the box. So far the drive assembly always runs with plays with full speed - or not at all.
Up-to-date the update functions only on special Debug boxes. We assume however Microsoft immobilizes also conventional Xbox360-Konsolen shortly by updates.

Who needs one of these now?

Since the site is German, the above is a translation, not a poorly worded article. Cyanite also point out that the loading speed of a game may take a hit, since the drive is spinning slower, so the data is reached slower. Is that a worthy sacrifice, or would you rather have faster load times and turn your surround sound up that extra notch? Let us know below.

I’d rather just have a quiet drive lol

The drive certainly shouldn’t spin at full speed all the time, especially not in the game’s menu. When loading it should load at full speed though

From what i can work out this wont effect loading speeds. The 360’s dvd can run at 12x. The new software shouldn’t effect it max speed just allow it to run at lower speeds. So at the times in a game when all that is loading is background music the drive can run at 1x with little or no noise instead of blasting off and on loading the next minute of music in 4 seconds

Yeah a lot of the time it’s not necessary to load full speed, it probably just wears out the components a bit more than it would otherwise too.

It’s better if it loads slowly when it’s not necessary to have all the data at once, therfor it’s quieter and might even improve performance of the other data loading

That would be awesome, the drive makes wayy too much noise

Yeah i would rather a quiet drive but not at the expense of load times. As kinetic says above its the noise it makes once the game has loaded that pisses me off. Making the drive quieter during actual gameplay would be great, as i can here my drive spinning even when my 5.1 system is so loud that my next door neighbour can tell what game i’m playing ;)

Quieter drive is ’sounds’ better. :-) I don’t care what anybody thinks but the 360 is like a plane taking off when playing 360 games. They should give a option in the dashboard to either run full speed or quieter.

Peace and L:-)ve

I have more important things to bitch about than a little noise comming from a game console. Get a life faggots.

LOL! yes!

Clearly nothing really that much more important though as you still have the time to come on here and bitch about people bitching about there drive.

So the rhetorical question would be who is the bigger bitch?

I’ll have to agree with that.
Is my 360 loud? Hell yes.
Do I hear it while playing games? Hell no.
But I guess if I could, It would annoy me…

Science proves that worms in the hard drive will make it run quieter.

A “little” fan noise? Um, kinetic ‘dog’-fart, you need to power the console on before commenting on this subject.
Who here is complaining about the FREE 360 console they received? Anyone? Since I PAID for my expensive piece of loud equipment, I have the right to say what and how I feel about it.

Thanks for posting kinetic ‘dog’-fart!
