Assassin’s Creed short film in development

If you have ever felt that you could have made any of the Tomb Raider films so much better, then you would understand how frustrating it is that there is nothing you can do to change anything. It seems someone at Ubisoft felt the same way, and has actually done something about it. They are creating an eight minute film based on their upcoming game Assassin’s Creed, with the intent of giving you the viewer a chance of “adding their [your] own personality to the story”.

If it all sounds confusing, then that’s because it is. Whilst Ubisoft are making an eight minute film based on Assassin’s Creed, it seems you can change a lot about it to fit how you want it to. It seems the next generation of movie watching is upon us.

Ubisoft’s first short film will appear this year with the ambition of circulating it through Web sites, iPods and video game consoles like Microsoft’s X-box Live, according to Carré, who said that for the moment the company was not looking to traditional movie theaters for distribution.

Using an untraditional distribution form, he added, will allow viewers to edit and manipulate the film, adding their own personality to the story.

“We hope to make our games more visible,” Carré said.

“The gamers have been waiting for years to see these movies, and now we can turn them into films with heroes that they like.”

It’s certainly an interesting idea, and one that will surely be closely followed to see how this turns out. Ubisoft are so serious about this new way of watching movies that they have opened up a new studio especially. Based in Montreal, their first project will obviously be the eight minute film of Assassin’s Creed, with plans to do more longer films (but presumably not real films) in the future.

It remains to be seen exactly how this will work at the moment, but keep your eyes peeled for more news on this. Have you got any short films you would like to see on the Marketplace based on your favourite games? Let us know below.
