GTA IV Xbox 360 exclusive? [Updated]
Ok don’t panic just yet, it’s just a small rumor and it’s far from a confirmation but if you headover to Rockstar’s support pages and check out the list of available to get support from you’ll notice that GTA IV only has support available for the Xbox 360, with no mention of the Playstation 3 and PC versions. The official GTA IV site has no logos for any consoles listed and still shows to countdown to the trailer that’s coming tomorrow. Now normally this wouldn’t be any reason to panic but with the rumors of Microsoft buying Take Two an exclusive wouldn’t be too surprising.
Update: Crisis averted, Rockstar updated the page and it now lists the PS3 version as well. Move along, nothing to see here.
Something’s missing…
Take Two has recently been in financial trouble and has been looking to be bought up by another publisher. They postponed a shareholder meeting, this meeting was scheduled 5 days ago but has been postponed until tomorrow. Tomorrow is not only the day that the GTA IV trailer hits but also the day that Microsoft is making a big announcement, according to the grapevine that is. Now the grapevine wasn’t very specific, it could’ve been talking about the Elite announcement, and MGS vice president Shane Kim already said that they “could never launch an acquisition bid at a third party publisher” but it’s all becoming a bit too coincidental for us.
Again, before you go running around, screaming that Sony’s doomed; this could still be a screwup by Rockstar’s webmasters and it’s far from a confirmation, especially since the game’s entry in Rockstar’s list of games still lists the game as multi-platform.
Don’t panic.
Check back on Xboxic again tomorrow around 11PM GMT tomorrow for the promised GTA IV trailer, which is most likely to provide some hard evidence as to which platforms the game is going to be on.

If it became MS-exclusive, wouldn’t that kill the soundtrack possibilities? I’m pretty sure Sony would take their ball (in the form of their music) and go home.
Erm, like Sony own the right to every piece of music ever… Plus, Sony Music is an entirely different entity to Sony Computer Entertainment…

I’m basing my statement on the fact that I’m pretty sure it was a tie-in deal with Sony Music (which was negotiated in part because the Playstation got exclusivisity for a good period of time for the games) that enabled Rockstar to get the really good soundtracks for the last few incarnations, wasn’t it?
Therefore, if Sony spat the dummy over this, Rockstar would need to move sharpish to get cosy with another label and get the music sorted.
Plus, while they’re a separate entity, they’re still part of the same whole, and you’d be daft if you’d think they wouldn’t look out for each other’s interests…
I don’t think industry ‘feuds’ mean this much to Sony. It’d be effectively asking them “do you want us to pay you to promote your artists in a hugely successful game, or go and pay your competition labels instead?”.
PGR3 had Sony-labelled Music in it’s soundtrack, I believe.

Can you imagine the fallout if this is true. MS will win this console war for sure.
I would be suprised that even if MS buy rockstar they could pull the support from the PS3/PC at this relatively late stage. Surely Sony would have a contract in place with them saying it needs to be released at the time of the 360 release?
Microsoft could null the contract saying the install base of the system would be too low and it’s too much of a financial risk…
It wont be!! Ive had the official pre-release sleeves for both ps3 & 360 in to my store, pity though!

If Ms had bought take 2 it would have happened ages ago due to all the legal issues, rockstar would not have wasted time money and manpower on a PS3 version just to have it plugged at the end. Take 2 have sent out to all retailers pre-release info for both consoles for october. Guess we see tmr though.
I couldn’t care less as i have both consoles, i will get it on the 360 if it comes out first on that, or if it comes out on both at the same time i will buy the better version. Whatever happens i WILL be buying this game.
Supposedly MS was having 2 huge announcements, one today and one tomorrow. Today it was the elite. Everybody is speculating about tomorrow, but holy shit I hadnt realized that tomorrow was the debut of GTA4 trailer… just in time to have an xbox 360 logo at the end with the words JUMP IN, and just in time for tomorrow’s MS announcement OMG.

When the announcement of Take 2 considering being bought, I thought it’d be a huge opportunity for Microsoft! They’d get all the 2k sports games exclusively along with the all mighty GTA 4 to round it off!
Would be great for us Xbox 360 gamers indeed, they’d optimise it more than otherwise and there’d be more DLC, that’s for sure
I doubt MS will buy a company that is not generating any revenue just to have some exclusive games, if they do…. that will prove how desperate they truly are..

I think that Rock* has to much bad press going for it for a big company like MS or Sony to purchase it outright. Imagine the size of lawsuits that they will surely follow such a purchase.
I don’t think M$ are worried about law suits, it hasn’t bothered them all this time.
