Epic aren’t Roadie Running away from problems

Were you one of many who was initially delighted about the new Gears of War patch, only to discover that they had tweaked the Roadie Run in such a way that it became even more irritating? It seems Epic have listened, and another update is in the works, which will strike a fair balance between old and new.

Rod Fergusson, the producer of Gears, had this to say:

As you know, at Epic we try very hard to listen to our community and address issues they may be having with our games. Recently, to do just that, we tweaked the way that roadie run controls so that players would have greater control of their movement in an attempt to reduce the amount of times a player would accidently get sucked into cover. Our idea was to look at “player intent”, in essence, where is the movement stick when a player bumps into cover. If the player wants to go into cover then they’ll have the stick pointing towards it. It they want to stay out of cover then they’ll have the control stick pointing away from it.

We tested this method extensively for weeks and really felt that it was a solid improvement, otherwise we would have never released it. We have received numerous emails and forum posts from people who really like the new system but unfortunately that is not true for everyone. Based on what we’re hearing from the community now, there are a large number of players where this new control system does not help them as we intended. For that we apologize.

The good news is that we have been looking at this problem very intently as soon as we started getting reports of people getting caught by cover more frequently and we believe we have found the ideal solution for both groups of players. It’s one that takes the best elements of the original roadie run control scheme and marries it with the best elements of the latest roadie run update and doesn’t have any of the negative issues of either.

Our current plan is to continue to test this latest tweak to make sure that there are no more issues with it moving forward and then to include it in our next title update. This will not happen immediately of course as a full test pass and a full certification test pass takes time, and we’ll want to monitor if there are any new issues that require attention due to the inclusion of Annex or the removal of certain exploits.

We appreciate your patience in this matter and please know that we have your best interest at heart any time we look at updating the game.

“Bah, not again…”

People actually complimented the new system? Really? It’s nice to know that Epic do at least listen and that we can all make a difference. Personally I had no problems with the original. Sure, you occasionally get stuck on an object, but it was at least bearable. Apparently it needed a change, but we now need a Version 3. Perhaps the easiest solution would be to have options of which version you wish to use. That would please everyone.

yay for epic listening n fixing that bs. whoever complimented it can suck my left and only nut. but anyway, lets hope they either revert it the way it was or maybe make the requirement that u have to repress A to stick to cover, that would be good.

Yeah either that or make you point the right analog stick towards the wall to take cover in roadie run mode… that might work too.

:)

cool, well done epic. but we need 8 on 8 multi… or even 6 on 6.

Yeah, that would be great with Gears’ atrocious host-side netcode… ROLLS EYES!!!! This game can barely support the lag-fest that is 4-on-4 … any more players would be a horrific nightmare of “epic” proportions. Let this be a lesson to Epic: catch-up with the rest of the industry already and stop giving us multiplayer netcode that is YEARS outdated.

that would be tight ^

I actually really like the new control, I haven’t had problems sticking to things I don’t want to.. but yes, Epic deserve a lot of credit for quickly dealing with things like this, not leaving it months and months before even SAYING something.

…wow. These guys are wonderful. I wish all developers were like this.

*Nods* if only.

Actually, gotta give props to RedOctane here. They were pretty quick on fixing the whammy bar.

there’s not a single think epic can do to get me to enjoy GOW anymore other than include a party system. i only liked it before because it was new, now i’m tired of playing with nobodies and kids.

You can play with friends no problem, but unfortunately you’re a pathetic achievement whore with no life and no ability to attract the opposite sex. So ranked matches are your only misguided attempt to maintain some dignity… but it isn’t working, sorry.

Great to hear they listen to what peoples thoughts are specially on such a big game. THE HOST….thats something they should work on…multiplayer the host always has a clear edge on everyone and it can get very annoying. If only something could be done about it.

lol
try getting a better connection. Epic can’t help you.

Funny how nobody has a problem with any other multiplayer affair (i.e., R6V, etc) using the EXACT SAME CONNECTION as they use for Gears. Hmmm, could it be that Epic royally f*cked-up by using horribly outdated netcode?? Get off Cliffy B’s d*ck you fanboy loser.

While they’re at it, they might as well fix the new weapon slide and chainsaw glitch that they didn’t manage to get rid of at all.

Comment by Yoshima31ite on 2007-04-16 03:14:04 | Reply

they got rid of it for the way people used to do the glitches, but people found new ways to do them. And personally it doesn’t bother me too much, just don’t let them get near you with the chainsaw, and as far as the weapon sliding… just do it too.

i like the new system personally as i think it gives the max control to the player. i think people just dont really understand how it works, or they are too noob/lazy to utilize it and so they complain. but kudos to epic for apparently trying to make the perfect offspring of both now. should be interesting to see what they come up with. epic and cliffy b have been a company ive liked/trusted for quite awhile now.

I don’t mind the new system, it’s just roadie running around corners is near impossible now.

Don’t get me wrong…. I love Epic…. and Gears…. but having the “A” button do so many things is bound to have its drawbacks.
Personally I prefer the way Rainbow Six choose to do cover.

never happened to me but the hit detection is seriously messed up now I shoot people with a full clip of actively reloaded shotgun shots and they don’t die, then I take a normal shot and die instantly!

Totally agree. Also they need to fix the dropping through the floor that seems to happen every time on Fuel Depot when climbing the step inside the warehouse just to the sides of the Hammer + getting down them.

trying getting a better connection? because of host advantage? im on 20 meg and anyway the xbox 360 can only take 2 meg into it max. Its not my problem its the game.

Surely the download speed ain’t as important than the upload?

You mean people still play this game? Trade it in now while you can still get decent money for it.

Comment by Yoshima31ite on 2007-04-16 23:05:41 | Reply
