New screens from Carcassonne

Hot on the heels of the news that we may get two Arcade games this week comes another future title in the works. Named Carcassonne, this strategy game sees you trying to develop your land in order to score points. Sounds crap when reading the details, but it actually looks pretty decent.

We first heard about the game way back last year. You have to strategically place your tiles dealt to you and complete towns, roads and farms, all the while trying to get as many points as possible. To get more points, you have to claim the largest towns, the longest roads and the biggest farms. You can also steal from your opponents.

At heart, this is a board game, only being published in 2000. It will be the second board game to grace the Arcade, along with Settlers of Catan. The game is meant to be accessible for all ages, regardless of your skill. I’m in luck then! Check out two of the twelve screenshots below to see just how interesting the game looks. The rest are viewable here.

The game also features:

  • Special AI settings to challenge any skill level!
  • Challenge your friends! Up to 5 players on Xbox Live! or 4 players on one Xbox 360
  • Helpful step-by-step tutorial to teach you the game in minutes.
  • The complete Carcassonne-72 tiles and all rule sets!
  • Includes the Rivers I expansion tile set
  • Automatically updated scoring system for quick reference to your current status
  • Dynamic 3D visuals and particle effects reinvent the classic board game
  • Based on the 2001 Winner of the Spiel des Jahres (the worlds most prestigious game award)

The game is apparently being released in June, according to the press release. I’m excited, are you?

Looks like a cross between Catan and Risk.

Or, at a push, possibly Rampart. Which rules.

Excellent game. We play the board game of it all the time. Have all the expansions for it. It’s not an RTS. It’s a tile laying game. Basically everyone takes a turn, draws a tile, and places the tile on the board. The tiles have roads, forests, city sections, etc. You have to match up the tile to another tile that matches it (piece of city connected to another piece of a city, road to a road, etc.) You then have the option of placing one of your guys on the tile you just placed. You use these guys to claim cities, farms, roads, etc. and you get points based off of this. Easy to play and pretty cool. I wonder what if any expansions they’ll include.

Beyond that who knows.

Google for Carcassonne there’s several websites that have the game online for free along with Catan and several others.

I hope they have some expansions. Rivers 1 is a nice 13 tile addition that you start the game off with. Inns and Cathedrals would be the best expansion to include followed by Traders and Builders. For online play it King and Scout would be nice too.

Oh, this doesn’t look bad at all.
