Elite Trade-in offer confirmed

There’s good news and bad for those of you planning on trading in your 360 for an Elite. Xbox360 Fanboy got a hold of the flier for the promotion, and it will work differently than previously rumored. The good news is you’ll still be getting credit for your system, the bad news is the credit won’t be used how you would like.

The good news is GameStop is offering more trade in credit than usual. The bad news is you won’t be able to use it towards the purchase of your Elite.

The fliers will be given to all Elite purchasers, who can then bring their old system in before May 27th along with the appropriate coupon, and can receive increased trade-in value for their system. While having any program is a plus, it still seems like a pretty raw deal for the consumer. The trade-in values aren’t that good, and not being able to use it towards your Elite make this offer decidedly mediocre. The question now is, how many 360s will we see on eBay on April 29th?

But this doesnt make sense, why is this saying trade up for the elite when you cant get the elite? Thats like saying upgrade your TV to this one, but you cant get this one!? Its so pointless, surely we can just trade in our 360’s as normall and get an elite whats stopping you? The shop isnt going to turn down your money or console or whatever are they.

Everybody looking forward to trading up = pwned

Well then just buy the Elite and then trade in your stuff and the next day refund the elite system and then re-purchase it with the credit you received! It’s that simple!!

Since when do Game Stop or EB Games ever give good trade in values? Just sell your system on Ebay or the like and go buy an Elite.

One day people will realize how much of a ripoff that gamestop and ebgames are.

They offer no good deals, their “pre orders” are useless, and they insult people with “trade ins”.

The more morons out there that toss away their money on them, the more ms and other companies see that the general gaming public are fucking idiots.

I know what you mean dude. They do the trade in stuff because thats the only way they can make money. You trade in a game and they give you 20 bucks, sell it back for 54. I will never trade in anything to Gamestop or EB.

I’m confused. If I buy an Elite and then the next week (after I’ve transferred my old data, if possible) give them my old 360, will I not get $250 cash?

Comment by cujoe on 2007-04-20 19:12:31 | Reply

i think they give you 250 in store credit, but if they do give you cash, then basically there is no bad news, there just saying you must pay the elite in full, then come get your cash later! maybe! thats how i take it….. god i hate gamestop!

This is why I’m now looking into a PS3. I like my 360 premium and have no complaints. The Elite is just a silly purchase for any consumer but hey, it’s a free country. The part that bothers me the most is that Microsoft and obviously Gamestop really think most gamers are morons. In some ways, they are right because a number of you will buy this and do the trade in.
Common sense would tell you that your premium is worth more than $50 over a core unit. The 20GB hard drive is a $100 dollars more not to mention the wireless controller. Premium trade ins are the biggest losers. No thanks, I’ll take a use 20GB PS3 instead.

the main reason for an elite at my house is that i have my premium 360 in my bedroom. we recently bought a 52″ 1080p lcd for our living room, and an xbox 360 with HDMI output is what my parents want. we are also looking into the hd-dvd drive. plus the xbox matches the tv. so i guess our reason for wanting one is good, not sure about everyone else.

Well to be fair on a business point of view, why would they want to be inundated with white second hand xbox’s whilst virtually giving away the elite. Buying elite full price profits them, and the console trade in is similar to trading in games offers more or less.

I guess your not too familar with how the used videogame market works. The reason EB/Gamestop, Gamecrazy, etc. is in business is not because of new game and new console sales.
They make the bulk of their money on selling used items.
When they buy the 360 for you for $250, they can sell it for $350 or $329 and that gives them $100 or $80 profit. On new console sales, they probably make $20-50 profit on each console (if that much). It’s a no brainer for them to do this.

The whole Elite thing is pretty much useless in my opinion. They needed to push out a bigger hard-drive in anticipation of the iptv and greater hd-movie download selection… the HDMI output is a nice addition, but until hollywood grows the balls to cripple resolutions on other than hdmi, it’s hardly a reason to pay an extra 100.00 bucks.

And frankly, 179.00 for a 120 gig hdd is aggravating. I know, it’s a laptop sata drive… it’s still too much money.

Lol they are basically saying “buy the Elite…then give us your old 360 and well give u some instore cred.” Idk…I guess this is a good deal for some.

I will get the Elite (already paid for), but not eveyone is like me. Most do follow a budget.

Some people may only have the $500 required to buy the Elite, but will decide to hold off, as that would leave them no money to buy a few games. This way, they can use the money to buy the Elite, then bring their old console in for trade-in value and still get games.

You must remember that most places will not offer any type of trade value for your old console. (try it a Wal-Mart).

I am giving my oldest one away to a friend.

That’s similar to me. Im gonna buy the elite outright and then sell my old xbox360 afterwards. Might get it serviced before selling it too cos its playing up at the minute.

As bad as this deal sounds, at least they’re allowing you time to transfer your old hard data data over to the new Elite before trading in the original 360. Plus you could probably get cash instead of credit, but at a lesser value — just like they do with games.

Comment by Darkhosis on 2007-04-21 09:03:04 | Reply

you notice that eb games guy that was posting comments when they first announced trade ins for the elite is not posting anything now that they have changed what they originally had said.

The more I think about this offer the more it seems like false advertising to me. When you trade in a car the dealer gives it a value, you then apply that value to help pay for a new car. you don’t buy the car and then the next day bring in your old car and get credit for oil changes. its not a “trade up” its the same bullshit offer they give all the time with the exception that they won’t apply your trade in towards the elite price before you purchase it.
