Delay has a Massive Effect on Summer [Update]

The Summer is, as I’m sure we all know, a horrible time to be a gamer. Very few (good) games are released through the months of June to August, and thus it forces us to go out and see the world. It was with pleasure then that Mass Effect was meant to be coming in June; a hopefully solid RPG to whittle away the time. Sadly, a trip outside now seems a possibility, since the game has been delayed until September.

Update: This delay could affect the EU only according to one or two sources, but Bioware have also come out and spoken. More after the jump.

CVG report that a Microsoft event held this morning confirmed that MS would be releasing the game in September, which means that although they avoid the Summer drought, that isn’t always good for a game’s sales, the game is now in direct competition with Blue Dragon, as well as the rest of the games arriving in Autumn (Fall). This is a slight concern since the game may be overshadowed somewhat by other games, especially if we see Halo in September as well.

This news crushes any hopes of seeing the game in May, June or July. Most people thought a June release was to be the most likely for whatever reason, but that dream has now been destroyed. It’s a great shame, but that is the Effect the Summer has on games as big as Mass Effect.

Let us know what you think about this below. No doubt many of you will be bitterly disappointed.

Update: Bioware have come out and said the following:

There have been an unusually high number of threads recently speculating about the release date for Mass Effect or what rating it will recieve from the ESRB.

Currently we also do not have an official release date for Mass Effect.

Currently we do not yet have a final ESRB rating for Mass Effect.

When we do have either an official release date or when we know what the ESRB rating for Mass Effect will be, we will make a formal announcement and there will likely be a thread or two discussing such announcements.

Remember, until you hear about it officially on these forums or the main Mass Effect webpage, there is no release date. Everything is speculation. Stay tuned.

It is suggested by a few people that is may be an EU only delay, since only CVG is currently reporting on it. However the above announcement debunks this, so for now it all remains up in the air and nothing is certain.

Typical that a game of this caliber would be delayed, but I’d rather see that than have them push it out the door too fast. Too many titles have been rushed on the 360, resulting in a less-than-optimal experience.

At least it frees my calendar up to play Forza more.

:P gash, it sucks and yet at the same time its good to know that the developers want to put out the best they can… just means the end of the year i will get a mass of games…

I’ll give you $25 and a half-full box of frozen taquitos for it?

$27.50 and a talking Stewie doll.

First thing I thought when I heard about this was naturally enough ‘NOOOOOOO’. But then I thought about it and an ‘extra’ (they never really officially dated it even if we all hoped and prayed other sources were right) 3 months worth of polish is never a bad thing especially on what is in all likelyhood one of the 360’s biggest RPGs for some time (especially of its type).

Yeah but they are probably ready to release but don’t have the go ahead from the suits. They will wrap this game up and put it on the shelf and work on DLC until its release…this is clearly a marketing move, and a very stupid one at that. Every year, 3 or 4 major games get “delayed” to the holiday season. What I find confusing is the magazine ads I have been seeing for this game, why advertise now if you aren’t releasing for months? Maybe there is still hope…

Forza is sure to be pushed back(again) as well, so try not to be too disappointed when we do not see that until September either…

Forza already has an official date. As for Mass Effect, I believe this is a blessing and a curse for MS. If the game is not ready, thats a blessing because you don’t want to disappoint on a game like this. I’ve been impressed with the pics but not with the latest trailer which really didn’t reveal much.
The longer they wait to get their key titles out, the better for the competition who will be catching up in the Fall and Winter.

No way! It’s a very bad idea to release it in September, what’s wrong with June/July/August when there aren’t being any other MGS games released?
Why??? Man It’s gonna be a game-less summer again

another thing…what’s going to happen with PGR4 then? What about Too Human? No time left for those to be released unless they’re done before Mass Effect.

I’d be incredibly pissed off it the delay was only in Europe (not EU by the way)

It ain’t all that bad. Think about it: if they do delay to September, that means you’ll have a month to play Mass Effect before GTA: IV comes out in October. Then you’ll have two sick-ass games to carry you over to Xmas. That’s not to mention Halo 3, about which I can’t care less since I don’t like it.

Also, don’t forget Assassin’s Creed is due out sometime between now and Xmas, so the lineup for the 360 is not sounding too shabby, though it definitely looks to be back-end loaded.

Then there’s the smaller fries, like Overlord, which looks okay.

In the meantime, I’ll be playing Oblivion, GRAW, Gears multiplayer and Fable (great original Xbox game) and trying to get all those damn orbs in Crackdown. That should tide me over.

Mark my words: Forza 2 will be delayed - official date or not.

I really hope not because it is the ONLY game I want, but they will release a demo of it and shortly after announce it has been pushed back 2-3 months.
