360 Elite: The differences, the HDD transfer and more

The 360 Elite is set to be released in North America soon, and publications across the pond have been receiving their gear as a courtesy from MS. This has led to all kinds of posts about what the Elite does in comparison to the regular 360, and how the HDD transfer works. After the jump, Xboxic has a roundup of everything you will need to know in order for you to make the best decision possible.

Firstly, the Hard Drive. Assuming for a moment you buy the HDD on its own, then all you need to do is follow the pretty easy instructions provided. In the box, you will not only get the 120 GB HDD, but a transfer cable and some software. You plug the transfer cable into the bottom of the 120 GB HDD whilst the 20 GB remains on your console for the time being. Plug the other end of the data transfer cable into any of the three USB ports, then pop the software CD into the drive. This initiates the transfer process, where you will be prompted to press OK, Yes and so on, then the process will begin. Most transfers take around forty minutes, according to reports. (With regards to the USB ports: MS say any of the three can be used, but official instructions say only the back port may be used. It’s unclear whether it makes a difference.)

That is all plain sailing, and after the time reaches zero, all content from the 20 GB drive would have moved from the 20 GB over to the 120 GB. Therefore, all content is erased from the 20 GB, giving you a brand new HDD to sell, trade in or use on another console. Any content on the 120 GB would also have mean erased, however Hexic HD does remain. So if you haven’t got that unique Arcade game, you’re in luck.

Now, for the Elite itself. Packed with version 1.2 of HDMI, the console is black and so is the controller (and the headset, also included). In the box you get the 120 GB HDD, an HDMI cable and an extra connection to re-route your sound if you have a 5.1/6.1/7.1 set up. If not, the HDMI cable carries the sound anyway. This extra connection to re-route the sound plugs into the port where you currently have either your composite/component leads or VGA lead.

Microsoft are anticipating that most people buying the Elite will be first time buyers, not upgraders. If you are an upgrader, this is the part where it gets a bit sticky. You will probably want to transfer over all your stuff from a 20 GB HDD to your new 120 GB HDD. Unfortunately, no cable is provided out of the box, and an email or a call to customer support is in order. They will send you a data transfer cable free of charge, but in the mean time, continue using your 20 GB drive, otherwise you will overwrite your data on the 120 GB when you come to do the transfer.

The second annoying part is to do with Arcade games. Movies cannot be transferred over so will have to watched before the process. Arcade games are even more annoying though. The content is tied to the console ID as will as the Live ID. For anyone who has had to replace their 360 at least once, you know where this is heading. Upon completion of the transfer, the Arcade games have moved to the Elite, and you can place the 120 GB on your new console. The problem now is the console ID is different. This therefore means that the Arcade games can no longer be played offline, because they revert back to demo form. If you are signed into Live then that’s fine, you get the full version. Also, other gamertags will no longer be able to play the games since it isn’t tied to their ‘tags, unless the original ‘tag holder is signed into Live.

As for the performance of the Elite and regular 360, Engadget has a nice comparison article. To summarise, the 65nm chip is NOT in place, so the Elite is still just as loud as its brother. The article also notes that there seems to be little difference in the visual side of things through HDMI.

That just about wraps it up on all the information currently known. Below is video posted by Major Nelson where they discuss the contents of the Elite and the process, as I have already outlined above. Check it out for Hot Jen (who is she?) unpacking the box. Reports suggesting she comes with all Elites to help you unpack are currently unfounded.

We hope that helps, and if you have any further questions about anything, ask in the comments and we will do our best to answer them from the knowledge gathered from various sources.

I thought the transfer process would be connected from under the HDD to a USB port. Mentioned it way back on the news about the new 120GB HDD coming with a cable. The elite still seems a pointless buy by all accounts and everyone just as well get a bigger HDD on it’s own.

I said that the cable plugs into the bottom of the 120 drive, and I also said it comes with a cable. I don’t know what you mean?

Also, other gamertags will no longer be able to play the games since it isn’t tied to their ‘tags.

You can still play arcade games using gamer tags that didn’t download them, as long as the tag that did download them is logged into live. So if you have two controlers, log one into live on the original tag and then use the other to play the full arcade game with the different tag of your choice.

OK I clarified that a bit. I did mean offline, but I didn’t state that clearly, so thanks :)

But if you don’t have live, like for instance you go round a friends house to get xlba titles or updates, then you’re screwed. I imagine Ms will be inundated with calls about non-working full versions of live arcade titles. At the moment from what I’ve heard their call system is already backlogged from customers trying to claim back MS points to repurchase titles after MS replaced the console

“Hot Jen” is the article called her.

So who else noticed that big honking ring on her hand (diamonds, big ol’ rocks)? I did, so not so hot…

XBox 360 - We did not include the HDD kit in the elite because….

Well I think this blows. I was going to upgrade… but now I’m not so sure. Calling Microsoft so they can mail me a cable? WTF? And I won’t be able to play my arcade games offline? F*ck That! I own 46 games (arcade) and often bring my system to a house that has no broadband. This is the gayest news I’ve heard since I found out my cousin wants a sex change.

Comment by inty2525 on 2007-04-27 15:05:41 | Reply

would a sex change count as gay? anyway… on to more serious matters… where did i leave my child?

Comment by Wet Vein on 2007-04-27 18:03:46 | Reply

Well…. she’s a chick, and she wants to be a guy… and then be with other chicks…as a guy. That’s pretty gay to me.

Aweeee, isn’t it nice that they use some old guys to relate to the younger generation of gamers as father figures…. be a good son/daughter and go buy and Elite! Who’s yur daddy?

no cable????
Good thing I did not know this 4 weeks ago, or I would not have pre-purchased the console.

Comment by SneakySnake on 2007-04-27 17:58:14 | Reply

huh? so are you glad or mad?

im personally mad. thats a bunch of bullshit. they dont include the transfer cable, they make you have to go through the extra effort as the consumer - not a good business move. they also make it a fucked up transfer with arcade games and movies. and the HDMI is only 1.2 and not 1.3 which is crap if they are trying to truly be the leading edge and beat sony in terms of HiDef and being a media center. apparently there is also very little performance change. they also didnt build in WiFi which I still dont understand. so basically they are fucking over all the early adopters, who are most likely the biggest fans. good job M$ - i was gradually becoming more and more supportive of you as a company, beyond just loving xbox, but now youve thrown that down the shitter.

Comment by Thryon on 2007-04-27 18:16:47 | Reply

I was mad as heck, but now that I had time to think about it, I have little reason to be angry.

I care not for HDMI 1.3 as my brand new THX amp, and HD Projector both only support HDMI 1.2 only.

I care not if the XBLA games require me to be connected to live, as I am always connected to live, and I am the only person that uses my console (my wife has her own Xbox 360)

I care not about the movie issue as Canada does not the Marketplace at this time.

I care not about WiFi, as I have a gigabit switch in my house that connects all rooms, so LAN jacks are plentifull.

What did get me angry was that stupid extra effort that I have to do to transfer my files. I am still frustrated, but can see why it was done. As the article indicated, most who will purchase this console, do not already own an Xbox 360, and therefore will not need this one-time use transfer cable. This would not be an issue if I could just transfer all my save games to my Xbox memory stick, then to my Elite system but some save games cannot be transfered (Viva Pinata comes to mind).

Ah well…I already went out and purchased two black rechargeable battery packs…too late to turn back now.

I think the Elite is a load of Bullshit, all you get is the option to upgrade to 1080p…720p is good enough.

Comment by FoolInjection on 2007-04-27 19:52:05 | Reply

All I would really need the Elite for is the 120GB HD… and even then I don’t think I’d EVER have downloaded enough content to warrent getting it.

I play mine on a bog standard TV so the HDMI port is a bit redundant on me.

Maybe if I had a really high end HD TV… I’d think about it.
