Spring Update: IM problems being looked at & more
The Spring Update hit just this week, and as soon as people tried to use the MSN part of the update, there were already problems being discovered. There is semi-good news about the problem after the jump. It has also been discovered that websites offering save games to be downloaded have been sussed out, and the saves no longer work.
With regards to the MSN integration, it seems if you signed up to Xbox Live when you were younger than 18, the service is unreachable. Regardless of whether you have since turned 18 or not, the service doesn’t recognise that fact and continues to say the service can’t be used for a child. This is despite the fact that you can use it on your PC from 13 onwards, and despite the fact that with parent settings set to the right thing, video chat and headset use is also possible. Xbox.com has posted the following information on the problem. There are also some handy shortcut options that you may not have known about if you use a USB keyboard.
Why can’t I use Messenger on my Xbox if I have a child account?
The Xbox Live Messenger team places high value on child safety and is working on a solution to allow users thirteen-years-old and older the ability to safely use Messenger on Xbox 360. The solution must ensure that children not be contacted by unauthorized Messenger users, and must adhere to our Family Settings policies that give parents the ability to determine with whom their children can communicate. This is important work which requires proper time and diligence. We will update the community when we have more information to share.
I am now 18 or older. Why is my account still considered a child account?
There is a very small group of Xbox LIVE members who first created their accounts while under the age of 18 but have since passed their 18th birthday. These members cannot access Messenger on Xbox 360 at this time. We will explore solutions that enable these members to use Messenger on their Xbox 360 and will update the community when we have more information to share.
How do I use a USB Keyboard with Messenger on Xbox 360?
When you’re using Messenger on the console, you can use it with a keyboard while you’re engaged in other activities, such as watching a video or playing a game.
It is possible to use a USB keyboard while you are having an IM conversation on Xbox 360. Simply attach the USB cable from your keyboard to one of the USB ports on the Xbox 360.
You can use some of the following keyboard shortcuts to interact with the Chat Box:
- Sign in to Messenger. When you are not signed in to Messenger, press Windows + M to take you to the Messenger tab where you can sign in.
- Start a conversation. If you are signed in but don’t have any open conversations, press Windows + M to take you to the Messenger tab where you can start a new conversation.
- If you have an open conversation in Messenger and want to go to the conversation area, open the Xbox Guide and select Chat and IM or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
- Open the Chat Box. If you have any open conversations, press Windows + M to open the Chat Box right over your game or movie.
- You can see the last few lines of any active conversations and enter a message. This is a good way to exchange quick messages.
- You can close the Chat Box the same way you brought it up, by pressing Windows +M.
- Switch between conversations in Chat Box mode. You may have more than one open conversation. Cycle between conversations by pressing CTRL + -> (right arrow key).
- Open the Guide while in Chat Box mode. Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller or press the Windows key to close the Chat Box and open the Guide.
- If you using a Mac keyboard, substitute the Apple key for the Windows key.
At least they have acknowledged the problem and are looking at a possible solution. It might be frustrating, but the problem is being worked on, you just have to give them a bit of time.
As for the game save problem, it seems MS have done a good job in stopping the cheaters. If you have ever uploaded saves onto 360gamesaves.com for the world to use them, then you might be in a bit of bother. It seems MS have gone through the whole archive of saved files and put a block on the console ID, meaning all saves are corrupt.
In the Spring Update, Microsoft has implemented a new protection against gamesaving by using our gamesave archive against us - they went through our gamesave archive and downloaded all the saves, then everyone who has uploaded saves in the past has had their current local “ConsoleID” values added to a Console Revocation List implemented in the new spring update.
Any gamesave coming from these ConsoleID values is now recognized as corrupt in the latest update. Which means if you’re on the list, saves created on your console will now only work on your console. Your transfer privileges have been revoked.

Does this affect any of you?

HAHA indeed HAHA
Hahahahaha. Nice.
LOL, HAHA - good one
No word on changing the account then… dammit
That’s great…….lol
Good, now those damn achievement whores are gonna get the points the right way.
Anyone else have a problem with the auto sign-in? Since the update when I start up the 360 it doesn’t sign in automatically to xbox live. Not that pressing “connect to xbox live” doesn’t work but still..
i spoke to ms last night nd they sed it should b fixed within 2 weeks which is a load of bullshit!
The spring update corrupted my gamertag (XBox tech support verified this). I can’t sign on with my old profile, although I can create new ones. SO frustrating — all my saved games and several hundred dollars worth of dowloadable content are inaccessible, and possibly lost forever! Meh!
Since the update the sound at start up no longer plays. It’s not a problem because it is there at the dashboard. What is annoying is that the sound (in 5.1 at least) has gone from the South Park cartoon downloaded a while back. I’ve deleted it and will check when I have time to see if anything else is affected.
Regardless of all the testing, Microsoft still releases with toom any bugs.
I haven’t had a chance to use the IM yet.
Is it in a cool overlaid black box like the above image or just another blade?
um both technically. you have to put it in the “cool overlaid box” as explained in the last question in the above article.
personally i havent had any problems with the update and im liking things so far. although i havent messed around with MSN messenger hardly at all.
my main gripe is with the media end of thing. one thing i really wish they did was give us more media features like more video and audio codecs. specifically divx/xvid and .avi for video and some more advanced codecs for audio. it’s dumb that want to act as if they are trying to be the “complete” media and entertainment package and then they only have a handful of formats that it can run. i find it lame too because if they were trying to block piracy people can currently just transcode their files on the fly with orb or tversity, or they can transcode them permanently. and now with them supporting main profile mp4 you dont even have to transcode completely, but they still wont give us xvid/divx and .avi support. it’s really a dumb move for a company trying to promote its product in the way that they are.
i also REALLY wish they improved the interface for browsing music and creating playlists and stuff. it would be nice if you could save playlists you make on your 360 for later use as well. id also like if they had an “add to playlist feature” assigned to a button that you could push to add whatever youve highlighted (artist, album, or single track) so that you could albums without having to go into each album when you dont want to play a whole artist or add individual songs, without having to add an album and then go and remove all the other songs that you dont want from the album. i think a lot of little stuff like that would be nice to see maybe every 3 months, and then a bigger upgrade every 6. it would nice if they had
Since the update the sound at start up no longer plays. It’s not a problem because it is there at the dashboard. What is annoying is that the sound (in 5.1 at least) has gone from the South Park cartoon downloaded a while back. I’ve deleted it and will check when I have time to see if anything else is affected.
After the update I can’t get any sound anymore on videos (for example pac-man, south park and soundtracks) that haven’t got a 5.1-track.
This is really annoying because this also means that the media center-functionality has become useless.
There are several reports of this issue (also on XBOX.com), but I haven’t seen an answer from Microsoft yet.
Still, it must be easy to fix with an option to force the XBOX 360 to output Dolby Digital 5.1.
Hope this issue will be fixed with an update.
so does this mean that the phantom dust save that I just transfered a week ago will not work?
I’m happy that they’re working on this problem. I mean, like it was said all over every other post on this issue, the idea that I can use Messenger on my PC without any problem, but I can’t do it on my 360, just because I’m 17, is crazy.
And I really hope they fix the whole over-18 problem. I’ll be 18 in a few months, and I sure hope I won’t have to go through some long tedious process to verify I’m as old as I say I am.
People who use gamesaves to up their score don’t update their console or play on live. They usually have 2nd consoles and transfer a profile to another console via mem card to update score online… I know someone who does it, they have their console on the 1st original dashboard where you can use any gamesave…
Uhm, wouldn’t this just mean that people who’ve uploaded savegames in the past won’t be able to in the future, but this won’t stop others from doing so now? Or for that matter, since it’s the console ID, once those nasty gamesave sharers get the 3 red lights and have a new console shipped to them they’ll be able to do it all over again?
lol yer very much HAHA but what makes me laugh is the thing they say about people who have turned 18 i quote “There is a very small group of Xbox LIVE members” VERY SMALL VERY BLOODY SMALL i dont think so most of the people that are having problems are under 18 when signed up! why i ask you can xbox 360 do updates but cannot keep spme sort of Date system! shocking I know!?!?!
Im fuckin 17 and they consider me a child…bullshit, cant wait for this to be fixed.
I have used My email for someone elses Live account before i knew i couldn’t use it again. I want to know whether or not there will soon be an update to change your email adress because I want to sign into my MSN and not a blank one
Seconded.
Never had a PC when buying the 360 so used the works e-mail address. Don’t have MSN at work because that would just be silly of them to give it to us.
