Funcom announces cryptic MMO for the 360

Funcom announced a new MMO for the PC and the 360 on Friday. This comes only days after a poem hiding information about the game reached the hands of Eurogamer. This isn’t the end of the mystery, the game’s website offers another puzzle for users to solve.

From the official release

Taking place on our earth, in our times, ‘The Secret World’ (TSW) is inspired by history and mythology, modern conspiracy theories and ancient mysteries.

For there really is a world within ours, a secret world, where magic exists, monsters roam and ancient forces are fighting for the dominance of earth. It is a world of legendary stories, ageless conflicts and powerful cabals. In this world, even modern cities hide secrets. In this world, players can take part in the greatest conspiracies of our age, and battle the forces of darkness across the world and throughout time

According to the release, the game has been in development since last summer and is already at a playable state. There is currently no release date announced, but you can bide your time with their puzzles if you’re so inclined. While the concept of the game shows promise, exactly how an MMO in this kind of setting will play out is uncertain. Check back for details, and most likely more puzzles, in the coming months.

It sounds very much like a Neil Gaiman or Clive Barker sort of game…the “magical world alongside our world” aligns very closely with the themes in their novels/graphical novels. Particularly the mythology idea, which Gaiman leans on heavily.

The “magical world alongside our world” reminds me of ‘The Longest Journey’.. Now that was a great point & click adventure!

I don’t dig all the fantasy MMOs out there… I really want something set in a contemporary scenario with some magic or science-fiction twist. So far, I’ve only had City of Heroes to satisfy me, so I’m looking forward with interest to this game. :)

These are the same people who made those cool Dreamfall games.

We need a ShadowRun MMO! Oh, baby, that would be good.

Still, this one will be on my radar.
