Sega now powered by Unreal Engine 3

With seemingly increasing popularity each week, the Unreal Engine 3 continues to raise the bar for next-generation visuals. Sega of America, the latest company to license it, will utilize it for a few unannounced titles.

Gears of War, one of the most acclaimed titles of the past year, has helped flagship the new engine. With “its versatility and power [it] will help SEGA create incredible gaming experiences,” states Simon Jefferey of Sega of America. Epic Games, creators of the engine, has also expressed their excitement to work with Sega: “SEGA has a long history of innovation and leadership in our industry and we’re honored that they’ve chosen to use Unreal Engine 3.”

Although many die-hard fans of vintage Sega franchises, such as Sonic, may interpret this decision as a mistake (some encourage Sega to return to their classic routes), it will hopefully allow the company to innovate and expand upon many of their titles.

Sega has yet to announce the titles that the engine will be used on, but more information will likely be revealed within the coming months. Thanks, nofear360, for the tip!

Improving and expanding can only be a good thing. Here’s hoping the leave Sonic behind and work some new IP for their shiny new engine !

is it just me or do most UE3 games look too much alike?

Agreed, hopefully they will start making kickass games again. VT3 and VF5 was a good start, now it’s time to innovate again. Something that SEGA is best at.

I like the Unreal Engine and all but with all these people using it you got a whole bunch of games that look exactly the same. I see many dark and shiny hallways in the our future…

Yes, the challenge for the devs will be how they use the tool set.

Surely there’s a learning curve and with time, GDs will be better able to differentiate themselves from others using the same framework.

Still, I would rather have a bunch of good-looking games than a bunch of crappy ones.

The Unreal Engine would be superb for something like, say, Shenmue III.

Unreal Engine remake of “Daytona”.

Think I’m crazy - there were some great car racing mods for Unreal Tournament 2004!
