Hazy vision causes problems

If you’ve never heard of the upcoming game Haze, it will be stuck in your mind by the time you finish reading this post. The developer decided to publicly “diss” Halo 3 and ask for more mature games.

Haze scriptwriter Rob Yescombe had the following to say:

“while Halo is brilliant, you’re a teenager - the next-gen is about becoming more mature,” explaining that “in Haze you become an adult”.

[…]

“It’s about what’s happening in the world today - it’s ludicrous, and how can you make something that doesn’t reflect that? Well, you could bury your head in the sand and make Halo 3, but the fact of the matter is there are more important things at stake.”

It comes across as a bit childish to openly accuse Halo of being immature considering it is one of the most popular gaming franchises currently around. Free Radical, the developers behind Haze, were also responsible for the less-than-mature Timesplitters series. it seems strange that someone would talk of maturity being required when the company used to create immature (albeit entertaining) games, but never mind.

Another thing that should be pointed out is that games are generally created for escapism, where players can forget about the real world for a short time and relax by blowing some stuff up that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. Realism is nice to have of course, but sometimes too much can ruin gameplay altogether.

We have spoken about Haze once or twice before.

Whatever you may think about this, it is likely the idea was to get Haze known to people. Hating on Halo is an easy way to get some attention, and in this instance, it has certainly worked. Post away in the comments below about this if you can take the time to be away from the Beta.

I think your reading a bit too much into that. I don’t think its an attack on Halo 3 at all, rather an observation that games should, like films, adapt to represent their times rather than continue with old trends.

I think a suitable metaphor would be films; if we had continued to produce films like the Ealing Comedies and dramatic, black and white romance, we’d never of got as far as Minority Report or Farenheit 9/11 which are geared towards the current audience.

Halo 3 can be considered a “classic” game, consisting of big stompy aliens and a removed, science fiction setting. Haze, I believe is being stated, is closer to a “modern” game in that it reflects modern events and ideals.

Good enough for me.

Besides, I liked Timesplitters 2 much more than Halo.

very well stated monk. i also wanted to point out that the author of this article equates popularity with maturity:

“t comes across as a bit childish to openly accuse Halo of being immature considering it is one of the most popular gaming franchises currently around.”

popularity and maturity are truly independent of one another, and i think it is worht pointing this out.

They sound arrogant to me…If this isn’t an awesome game(we’re talking better than GOW awesome), they will likely be receiving a lot of Flak for that comment.

just a publicity stunt, say something towards the most popular gameing title out there right now to make people notice you, although i gotta agree with colby that it better be one hell of a game with a statement like that. i nevefr played timesplitters 1 or 2 what system are they for? Im also not big on the halo 3 beta, just doesnt do it for me.

Timesplitters 1 and 2 were on the PS2, well worth a go, especially if your a fan of Ninja Monkeys !

Since when do videogames have to be anything more than entertainment. Im not even a big Halo fan but these guys are talking out of their asses. Somebody better let them know that most of the Halo crowd are probably the same people that would be interested in their game. And pissing off a rabid fan base such as Halo’s isnt gonna help them sell any games even if Haze is the anti-Halo, Halo-killer.

“It’s about what’s happening in the world today”

errm then why are probably 70% of games either sci-fi or history?

Well Halo 3 Beta is crap imo, it is childish, just running round mindlessly shooting. The guy is right we need better more in depth mature FPS’. The reason halo is a “sucess” is all those who liked halo will buy anything to do with it and will defend it to the death. I had a PS2 and as a result i didnt play Halo but i did play Halo 2 when i got my 360 and i wasnt impressed and the same goes with the Halo 3 beta. i know its only a Beta but it isnt at all good, gameplay, graphically or any other way for that matter. Give me R6 or GRAW2 anyday over Halo 3.

just my thoughts! lol

Yo Tucky i’m with you on this one. Dont get me wrong i like all of the halo games and the multiplayer. For it’s time it was great, but now that you have games like R6, GRAW 2 and GEARS (which are games that have taken multiplayer to the next level), when you play the halo 3 beta it feels like yesterday’s news. When the beta came out i thought i was going to leave R6, GRAW 2 and GEARS, but after about playing the beta for about 2 hours - i was like “yeah this is boring”. Trust me, i tried to love it! When you play R6, GRAW 2 and GEARS after playing the beta you notice how much better those games are. Now I know alot of people will say “it’s only a beta” which is true, but in all honestly guys from now until the game comes out - it’s going to play the same (boo) and look the same (boo), only with more levels. I truely hope that from now until the game comes out Halo 3 becomes the next level for multiplayer action but i doubt it.

the halo series is way over hyped it just goes to show that with a marketing stradegy you can make people buy just another average first person shooter and say its the greatest game ever when other games like graw and gears get not near the hype deserved it sickens me.

Comment by mu on 2007-05-20 03:56:15 | Reply

i am just now climbing out from under the mountain of gears hype.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2007-05-20 19:26:13 | Reply

Yea, but at least it lived up to the hype and then some.

Halo is overhyped according to people who don’t really enjoy the game. I’ve invested a lot of time in Halo, Halo 2, and even the Beta now and I still can’t get enough. There is a reason why is is one of the highest grossing games in console history. If you don’t like it, that’s fine but you can’t deny the impact it has had in FPS community and future games.

As far as Haze is concerned, um, Halo is VERY relevant to modern day happenings. Just because it takes place in space with fictional aliens, the plot elements are more interesting than any boring Tom Clancey story. I mean, Religious warfare. Religious leaders blindly leading they’re devoted followers into self destruction. I think the plot is more mature than a lot of people think, not that everyone is going to convert because they now question their faith.

Just because the multiplayer has a fairly easy learning curve doesn’t mean its immature. With that kind of attitude you’re game is never going to appeal to the masses and is going to be played by the dedicated, but certainly not by millions.

Im not condoning what this guy is saying(its absolute bull) but the writer of this story names timesplitters to show that they also made” immature” games, but he was refering to only next gen game, timesplitters was a last gen game. I dont support what this haze guy said but you made a flawed statement.

lol,
its easy to be a baseball fan. Just hate the Yankees.
its easy to be a hockey fan. Just hate the Leafs.
its easy to be a basketball fan. Just hate Detroit.
its east to be a football fan. Just gamble.

its easy to get your game some media exposure. Just hate on Halo.

and besides, how anyone can consider a game of any sorts, least of all an FPS as ‘mature’ is beyond me.?!?!?!???

Comment by ManoDestra on 2007-05-20 03:43:59 | Reply

Some games can be considered mature, if what they aim to achieve extends beyond simple entertainment into the arena of enlightenment and dare I say “art”. A couple of games come to mind in this respect. Metal Gear Solid 1 on PlayStation 1 was a ground breaking game where you actually cared about the characters as they weren’t simply one dimensional like so many other games. And it had a lot to say about the nature of war and why we find it entertaining to play games based on that subject matter. I love mindless blasting as much as anyone else, but I think it has to applauded when a software house takes a risk and actually tries to make a serious point through the medium of a game. Manhunt was another example of this. Once you got past all the media hype and actually played the game to the end, you found that the game actually did have something quite serious to say about violence and voyeurism as entertainment. I think a mature game is possible to make albeit difficult due to public perception of the medium itself.

I’ve never understood the massive appeal behind the Halo franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the single player campaign of Halo 1 tremendously until the pain in the ass final section where you had to drive to the end of that stupid level. Halo 2 was interesting as some of it was played out on Earth and of course it had multiplayer. I’m probably the only person in the world who despises the matchmaking in Halo. I prefer freedom of choice rather than being thrown into a match. Secondly, online Halo 2 was crud as it mainly consisted of a bunch of guys sniping you from some secluded section of the map, then claiming that they’re great because they got the most kills. Never really understood this. It’s no fun sitting picking guys off, certainly not constantly. I like to get up close and personal in multiplayer, it’s simply more fun to go head to head because then it’s a level playing field. Anyone can snipe from a distance and claim to be great just because they scored the most kills. And they guns in Halo 2 weren’t as good as Halo 1. And I would definitely agree that there are far better FPS games out now. Halo needs to move on big time and based on the beta, it doesn’t appear to have done this. So far, nothing else on 360 beats Rainbow Six. That’s the bench mark now as far as I’m concerned. Great multiplayer with nice search criteria, loads of co-op and a great single player with superb graphics. Take a leaf out of Ubisoft’s book Bungie and you could be on to a winner.
