Gears of War - new achievements and more on the way

It seems Epic just can’t get enough of supporting their hugely popular title and quite frankly, who are we to argue? Speaking on the official Gears of War forums, Mark Rein Vice President of Epic Games has stated that “the next Gears of War update is coming along nicely” and has provided just a smidgen of detail.

Gears of War

The statement made today on the Gears of War forums reads:

Folks,

The next Gears of War update is coming along nicely. We don’t have a release timeframe for it yet but I just wanted to let you know we’re making significant progress. In addition to the previously mentioned plan to improve roadie run we’re also going to have new achievements relating to Annex and the Hidden Fronts DLC. Of course no title update would be complete without more exploit squashing and the ever-popular “general housekeeping”.

There we have it, though we don’t have the all important time frame, we do have an interesting revelation in regards to the new achievements. As the new achievement guidelines have allowed developers to make a further 250 Gamerscore points available via marketplace additions, it’s fair to assume that the upcoming Gears update will utilise that feature. Gamerscore whores, rejoice.

As is always the case, pricing has been the most common question and Mr Rein has taken the time to add the following:

The title update is free and that’s what contains the achievements. However some of the achievements are tied to things relating to playing the maps in the Hidden Fronts map pack which currently costs money but will be made free in a few months.

Unfortunately that means that many of us may have to wait until September to accomplish some of the forthcoming achievements. Nevermind, those of us who don’t yet have the maps can be at ease in the knowledge that we’ve gained an achievement of our own:

Achievement Unlocked

All kidding aside, we’re delighted to see the game being given ongoing support and we’ll be keeping you all updated with more details as soon as possible.

I would rather smoke a spliff than buy the new maps as well!! Coming from PC gaming, paying for maps is a bitter pill to swallow.

All of the above plus Wacken Open Air FTW!!!!

Also, this topic (kind of) made CNN:

The GOW maps are mentioned, along with the things a lot of us worry about.

XBox 360 - Nah, I’ll wait…

awesome! epic is continuing to kick ass. i was hoping for a bit more content in the update. perhaps the infamous new weapons that may never actually come out. maybe they shouldnt though for balance and all that jazz, but still it would be nice to have something a bit more prominent, but i suppose the new maps did come pretty recently which is pretty substantial. i dont know. id much rather see the achievements be more general than the new maps and annex personally. more player skill achievements or something. i think a culminating achievement for getting all the weapon kill and stomps and revives etc. would be cool. i know there are a couple threads about achievements people made up when they heard about the extra 250GS over on the epic forums. i posted some of my creations, though i cant really remember them. check it out if youre interested.

dry summer so what, I’m still not paying for 4 maps. I’ll wait until there free. Then I will enjoy the freebie stuff.

I thought you couldn’t go more then 1000 achievement points per game?

Comment by Gaz-DanaWalker on 2007-05-25 16:43:10 | Reply

you are allowed an extra 250points when it is DLC.

Comment by Marquee on 2007-05-25 16:46:20 | Reply

I never heard about that I still thought you have to do what Crackdown did and scale back the full game to like 800 points.

I could be wrong just never heard about it.

yay! I might actually go and play Annex again and keep the filter away from Warzone. I wonder what the achievements will be like, maybe “scored a total of 10 minutes in ranked matches of Annex”

I wonder why ms and epic havent advertised this game more. I saw the mad world trailer manyt imes and it is the best game commercial ever. but they should release a commercial where they show some of the gameply and show people how good it looks. many people still dont know what gow is. i guarantee they could sell a few more million copies and show casual gamers that the 360 looks as good as a 600 dolar machine.

Comment by Near Fantastica on 2007-05-25 21:12:14 | Reply

I think GOW is quite well know. And that “Mad World Trailer”, though its not actual gameplay… that is how the game looks. There is hardly any difference between in game graphics to cutscene graphics. I think GOW had an excellent advertising campaign was a huge success.

well well well……..i dont care

I play the “Mad World” practically every day. I love the song and love Gears even more; this video gets me hyped for some MP!

When I run in circles (strafing) it’s a…mad world.

The new achievements wil probably be fairly mundane, but there is still the option to allow for some corkers like… Finish a race to 19 at 420 target time. (Takes about 5 hours and can be decided by a mere 3 seconds when teams are evenly matched) Or perhaps finish a 5 matches decided by a single second. Perhaps even a few secret achievements like making 10 breaks/captures without killing an opponent.

As for those who say GoW sucks, take it from someone who has been playing shooters consistently from Wolfenstein 3d through the Dooms, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life etc etc etc right up to the present day. Gow is a refreshing change with only minor niggles that will surely be gone in a sequel but don’t affect the gaming experience too much. It just takes a little getting used to so far as the controls are concerned. It is those who can’t be bothered to learn these that hate Gow. (I was one of them, but my friend kept getting me online to play it and now I’ve come to appreciate the subtle nuances that make it so great.)

Oh and to those from PC land refusing to pay for new maps. Fair enough. However, what you’re used to is individual gamers taking their own time to download a map engine for a certain game and make the map in their own time for fun. In the console world, it isn’t so easy and the developers must be paid for their work. After all, Epic has already made X amount of dollars from GoW and could reasonably say that the wages they pay could be better spent upon designing a new game that would earn far more than an addon. However, Epic seem dedicated to this title and there is still some money to be made from publishing an addon so they kindly did as much.

Props to Epic for this dedication. It has certainly done a lot to keep the game from going stale for those who enjoy playing it.
