Custom games playable in Halo 3 Beta

The Halo 3 information simply won’t stop coming. We had a roundup post yesterday, but that simply wasn’t enough. Now we have confirmation news that custom games are playable in the Halo 3 Beta, as well as some never-before-heard information with regards to the full game, courtesy of a scanned Gamepro magazine.

Starting with the magazine, a guy over at GameFAQs has been kind enough to sum up all the information that the magazine contains about a variety of different things, as well as showing off the scans.

Weapons

  • Magnum - The Magnum is much improved since Halo 2, dishing out slower, more punishing shots. But it’s still not back to Halo 1 strength, as the clip currently carries just eight rounds and you can’t zoom in. Still a nice, precise choice for dual-wield combos.
  • Energy Sword - The infamous Sword gets two tweaks aimed at balancing its overwhelming power. One change is a brief weapon-switch delay. The second adjustment is more controversial: the Energy Sword now has an ammo meter that depletes with each attack, which keeps players from hoarding it indefinitely.

Vehicles

  • Wraith - The lumbering Covenant Wraith returns with a new player-operated secondary turret. It’s helpful for driving off boarding attempts.
  • Brute Chopper - This ugly, jagged Brute Chopper looks like something Firefly’s Reavers might drive into battle. Its twin cannons and heavy, blade-like chassis can pulverize lesser vehicles in a nanosecond.

Equipment

  • Radar Jammer - Hurl this item into a fight and watch as chaos and confusion engulf friend and foe alike. The jammer scrambles the radar of all nearby players and triggers disco-like light flashes to further disorient your prey.

Maps

  • Shrine - A UNSC battle cruiser looms menacingly over Shrine’s sprawling sand dunes. Shrine is the largest map ever to appear in a Halo game, so Bungie put a key emphasis on vehicle-on-vehicle combat. Shrine has few ties to older Halo 2 maps, but its massive size recalls Relic.
  • Epitaph - Epitaph is an arcane Forerunner cathedral-like structure that towers above the surrounding wasteland. The central killing floor is crisscrossed with elevated walkways, exterior hallways, and lifts. It’s a spiritual successor to Halo 2 maps like Colossus, Gemini, and Midship.
  • Last Resort - Zanzibar, one of Halo 2’s most beloved maps, has been rebuilt and rechristened Last Resort for Halo 3. This industrial site is almost twice as big, with a less cluttered internal layout and more paths into the flag room.
  • Secret Map - Bungie sneakily sent us two mysterious concept paintings labeled only as “Work in Progress Map.” We see the icey motif and pray for a new Lockout, but only Bungie knows the truth.

Customization

Create a Spartan:

  • Tired of staring at Master Chief’s ugly mug? Halo 3’s online mode offers new armor permutations that allow players to customize their personas from head to toe. Will the Covenant Elite player models be eligible for similar upgrades? Only Bungie knows.

As if all the above information and scans wasn’t enough for you, then checking out the videos below will show off some of the things that can be played around with if you can get into a custom game. There are some shots below of the Energy Sword in action, as well as a video showing the world that there is absolutely no hacking going on whatsoever.

Gamevideos have also got two High Definition videos of the Sword, Pistol and Wraith in action that you might want to take a glace at, though sadly they cannot be embedded here. We do however have some screens that you might want to check out just below of the Sword and pistol (dual wielded!), courtesy of Hushed Casket.

If you’ve played a custom game already, let everyone know how much fun it is below, and let us know if it makes you want the game even more. And in case you don’t know how to do it, get a party of eight together, then get invited into a different game where there is just one person. Take the whole party across and the ninth person apparently gets booted into a custom match. Then just invite away and everyone gets to join the fun.

Thanks to Twosixnine and SneakySnake for submitting.

I love this beta, and the fact that it isn’t a finished project yet, with more things to come on september 25, only makes me want it more. Sadly it ends this weekend.

Next weekend.

June 10 to be exact :)

I can’t find how to make/join a custom game?

I’ve put in an extra bit at the end just for you. ;)

I was pretty certain you can’t -play- custom games, but you can see the menus for them… through a glitch involving having more people than you should in matchingmaking parties. one of my friends did this and there’s a new gametype: INFECTION!

Yep, played a half dozen custom games last night. Rocketball with low gravity and slightly increased speed (~150%) is a blast (no pun intended). Low gravity and greatly increased speed (300%) with swords on Snowbound is a riot! (At that speed, you can almost outrun the turrets guarding the border.)

Comment by Yoshima 31ite on 2007-05-31 01:45:05 | Reply

and just to let people know the low gravity only affects people not vehicles or anything else as far as i could tell while i was playing around with it.

I played some custom games last night. I have no idea how the guy did it but when I left his party I was now host of my own custom game. The coolest game I made up was Slayer with brute shots as your primary weapon, regenerating grenades, 50% gravity, and 300% player speed. As soon as you take the lead, you get hit with 200% gravity, 25% speed, and you glow. This game was a blast. Nothing is more fun than sitting with a sword on the back of a mongoose and trying to cut people as your drive by. As for the magnum it is quite powerful, it fires slow, but it is far superior to that of Halo 2. I really think that these custom games will be available without mods sometime before the end of the beta. My gamertag is Near Fantastica. If you see me in a custom game feel free to jump in.

my 360 broke 1 day before the beta came out,
I still can’t play this shit
this suxx!!!

why do they even let you customize your armor, it’s cool, but you just end up red or blue anyway

Comment by Near Fantastica on 2007-05-30 18:23:44 | Reply

Armor customization is now beyond just 3 different colors. You can change your helmet, armor, gloves, etc. The red and blue is only for team games but not we’ll see some variation in these team based games too, which will be cool.

woOt!
this gets better each day. Loving the hell out of the beta. Good on Bungie to let us get a taste, plus, we get to assist in their stress tests and playtests.

Can’t wait to get a custom game going tonight.

Comment by Near Fantastica on 2007-05-30 19:43:44 | Reply

Yeah. If I can manage to get a custom game going tonight I’ll get some unique games going on. Since I left the custom game lobby and I have no idea how or intentions to mod things myself I have to rely on someone already on my friend’s list being in a custom game.

I’ve given up on the beta. Too many people cheating on it. Hopefully things will be different come september though

Comment by Near Fantastica on 2007-05-30 20:25:53 | Reply

I haven’t encountered any cheaters yet and I’m almost a major.

Comment by Nickfury187 on 2007-05-30 20:39:58 | Reply

me neither

somebody’s a sore loser…

Comment by Yoshima 31ite on 2007-05-31 01:43:09 | Reply

lol yeah i’d have to agree with that.

Comment by mass9 on 2007-05-30 21:00:22 | Reply

some people mistake regular LAG as cheating. I can’t say that I’ve seen any verfiable cheating (like one shot kills or really fast movement). Maybe he’s just no good and needs an excuse ;)

Comment by scott on 2007-05-31 00:03:02 | Reply

1 shot plasma pistol kills!
Disconnect to come back in again 10 seconds later

Scott, You just suck! the only time I ever encountered anyone playing “unfair” was people glitching out of the maps on Valhalla. Don’t say people are cheating because you can’t aim!

Comment by mass9 on 2007-05-30 21:03:17 | Reply

that Brute Chopper looks like one MEAN machine.

i’ve played about 10 custom games so far and they were all really fun. the sword and pistol KICK ASS!! also the wraith is pretty damn cool and there is a spot on it for your team mate to hope on to a turret to stop hijackers.
