Hacked 360s get some more Live safety
When cats and mice fight it is the exchange of blows that is most fascinating to see. After big cat Microsoft started dropping the banhammer on illegally modified Xbox 360s, slaughtering lots of mice along the way, the mice have now started their escape again with new firmwares that are supposedly undetectable.
Quoting the release notes for the new iXtreme firmware for Toshiba-Samsung drives:

Technical details
————————Defeats all current and some future Xbox Live detection attempts.
Useful? Not in any way, when reading this. The last time Microsoft had been harvesting data for months in secret, building up a list of reputedly over 400.000 consoles that were to receive the banhammer simultaneously. Since the console ID cannot be faked, all those machines are officially reduced to being offline for the rest of their lives, so the new firmware isn’t going to help them. As for those consoles not banned yet, this firmware truthfully only promises to block ’some future detection attempts’. So in reality, running this firmware will still get you detected and kicked out of Live for life, eventually.
As long as the Xbox 360 is still not fundamentally hacked to run modified code, the fight will always be in the advantage of the cat who can strike a lethal blow at will, while all the mice can do is run. Good luck to those people who are going to try this.

Interesting use of analogy ;).
In this fight, I soooo cheer for the Cat. The devs deserve their cash, ms deserve their cash, retailers deserve their cash and noone is forcing you to buy games. Wait a few months and they drop a lot in price. And with a consolewar going on, I rather see x360 gamenumbers increasing than playing illegal games.
you suck be quiet
i wish i had a hack, i waste so much money
i hack psps but not 360’s thats too risky havin the posibility of bein banned via XBL
for the money bill gates has already, xbox should be free, games should be cheaper. if you let people use xbox live then they have to pay for that.
Bill Gates takes his share sure, but when you buy games its the devlopers you are supporting not M$, and if people bought more games and didn’t run copies and hacked boxes games would be cheaper as profit margins would be higher.
No they wouldn’t. They don’t pass the increased revenue down to the consumer. LOL. What planet are you from?
¬_¬
I think you’d find they would. It would only take one major publish to do it and the rest would follow suit.
The only thing I find very funny in this discussion, I mean game developers should get money for their work, is that the same people that shout and cry that games must be original…
Have illegal Windows on their PC’s, copy every MP3 they can find and download the latest movies just out in cinema’s, get Adobe CS3 because it does cost a lot of money etc.!!!!
Want to see a photo of my legally purchased Adobe CS3 Web Premium box and my CD and DVD collections?
Even my Windows is legal, and next week I’m going to see Pirates 3 in the cinema.
Niels, ofcourse that’s nice but I’ll dare to say that 95% of all users won’t be that way. A lot will have illegal OS’s, software, anything
I am just saying it often sounds so funny. Those same persons are crying out about buying games or not but on the other hand…
Ofcourse, it’s good to get legal stuff
my windows is legal. i rarly download mp3s if i like them i buy there cd.. if i don’t i delete the mp3. i don’t DL movies b/c my ISP is a bitch about it.. and it’s not right in the first place.
Exactly, don’t lump everyone into the same class to justify your actions. Most people have respect and live their lives by a code of ethics.
or they just don’t have access to warez and claim to have “morals”.
Thats where you’re wrong mate. I whine cause I actually do everything legal (nowadays, was different some years ago, but having kids really changed my mind)
Heh, having kids changed my mind as well — on why it might be nice to make backups of purchased games and play off those, so when the disc gets scratched, I could just burn a copy of the original and be off to the races again.
Unfortunately, since there’s no way to tell if a copy came from an original sitting on my shelf vs. sitting on Blockbuster’s shelf, I understand why they fight it. :-/
DOES IT NOT STATE IN BRITISH LAW THAT YOU CAN LEGALLY MAKE 1 COPY OF ANY ORIGINAL SO THAT YOU CAN PROTECT THE COPY. IS BILL GATES NOT VIALATING YOUR CIVIL RIGHTS.
The only thing that would get me to mod a 360 would be homebrew similar to XBMC on the original Xbox. Current Xbox can’t cope with the new x264 files cropping up in fansubs.
Copying games doesn’t really interest me as I rent most of my offline games and then buy those I like (which are few and far between). And for online games copies are too risky.
Seriously Xboxic , all you do is fuel fanboys with crap . Leave it to MaxConsole and Xbox-scene for proper hack news . Remember last October with the apparent ‘ban hammer’ ? Wow…bullshit! Now that modders did get banned you felt like you did your job and all the fanboys rejoiced on the forums . I’m sure most of you download mp3’s on a regular basis too . You make me sick
Uhm what exactly is wrong with the article? We’re reporting on news happening in the world of Xbox, and that includes news on hacking. We’re not here to explain where to download it or install it, that’s for the ‘less legally oriented sites’ out there. But why should we not bring a short and factual report on the matter? As C4E himself says in the release notes, the hack is still detectable. So that’s what we report.
As for the banhammer from last October, we had information that we considered reliable enough. Turned out it got delayed a few months. Big deal.
xboxic just PWNED YOU CHRIS!!!! lol.
You tell em xboxic !!! Chris is a dick !!!
What he said ^^^.
My modded Elite still plays backups on live just fine.
Also , I agree with Chris , yall should leave modded firmware out of the news , cause too the ppl that actually know about hacking its perfectly clear everyone hear is talking out their ass.
time is not on your side tommy.
IF (big IF) you even do have a modded 360:
1. No one cares.
2. You will, at some point, be banned.
Then you’ll have the nicest DVD player out of all your friends.
Bull shit i cant wait until the thieving muther fuckers are banned from xbox live…….why should i pay £30 + per game when jammy bastards get them for £10 or less or even free…….Its bull shit
Also this site should not promote the fact that hacking is possible……if promote is the wrong word then simply just telling people that its possible is bad enough.
ummm news is news man
We made some choices in that respect, which is that we report on everything that’s happening in the Xbox world. Reporting, not handing out how-to’s. If 400k 360s get banned, that’s news in our book.
Well I think its a Valid and worthy news article, Most people are aware of the ability to mod consoles specifically for running copies anyway.
Since I’ve been at Xboxic its been fairly clear that Curry and crew are opposed to modding and have never ever condoned it in anyway to the best of my knowledge. To deny its existance and ignore the story would be negligant and I feel the choices made to run story were good. The article may alert people to the mods but it also quite clearly expresses the futility in it.
Xboxic is a kind of news site and there is, and will always be, some good, some bad and some neutral news. Get used to it. If u dont like the news on Xboxic u can always go somewhere else.
“..Then you’ll have the nicest DVD player out of all your friends.”
Hehee nice one=)
Would have been funny if true. But it’s not. Even if you’re banned from LIve all the burned copies will still work.
Everyone has done something illegal.
Funny thing is most people don’t even know it because EVERYONE does it nowadays.
True, but then not everyone is a 100% deliberate thief or altering a system which by it’s very nature is designed not to have it’s hardware maniuplated or reverse engineered.
A slight difference than jumping a red light methinks…
Well said.
What really disappoints me is the fact that c4eva or whatever his name is, is the bad guy.
This hack was desinged for one thing and thats piracy, thats what makes me hate the guy for releasing it.
The original lot who done the hack robison and the specialist never released it as its only for piracy so i respect them and there work but this c4eva guy no respect at all.
What does make me think ever harder about the subject is that he has no idea what microsoft are actually planning for these idots who actaully flash there drive.
He says himself go onlive at your own risk, well that says to me that he hasnt got a clue what ms are planning
“What really disappoints me is the fact that c4eva or whatever his name is, is the bad guy” Well no he doesn’t force people to aquire copies of games or for that matter even apply the mod. It could be argued that he is working for the homebrew scene which has nothing to do with playing dodgy copies CoD 3.
I’m not too worried about this. A lot of people are too scared to open their 360s, and then another 80% don’t know what they’re doing and brick it during the flash process.
The 10% who do get this working though, well… just expect to be banned. Microsoft have shown with the recent bannings that they can (through updates and games) check the console at hardware-level.
I think it’s safe to assume that Halo 3 will ship with an improved version of the beta’s detection methods(if the rumours are true and Halo 3 has some firmware checking mechanisms). And, you just know 90% of 360 owners are going to get this game.
It’ll be funny when little Jimmy (or Tom, in this case) puts it into his drive only to see the banned-from-live screen.
That should be 15-20% ^_^
Having hacked every console I’ve owned in my life (and that’s a lot, all the way back to playing burned PROMs on an Atari 2600) including the Xbox (which I never expected to be able to play on Live with but did play on line with Kai and the other tunnel programs). The 360 I have no desire to. Since I don’t spend much on games (just a $20 a month 2 game subscription to Game Fly keeps me occupied) and want to keep playing on Live I wouldn’t risk it. Look if you are modded and pirating games you have thousands of dollars worth most likely be happy with that and don’t expect to play them on Live.
Wow , and now the fanboys come in . Why do I bother ?
Poor rich guy.
i just want to know this…
how many of you download music?
Hypocrites
you need to be more technical with your questions dumb ass. downloading music doesn’t necesarilly mean your pirating like your stupid ass. there’s multiple sites that you can pay to download songs, i-tunes for starters.
as i’ve said before: I rarely download mp3s if i like them i buy there cd.. if i don’t i delete the mp3.
Idiot that you are!
You wanna know how many music I download? I download everything I like, everything, my whole music collection is downloaded, more than 40GB of music! (I do have some original cd’s
that I bought)
“BUT WAIT, Isn’t that illegal NX?”
I am not doing anything illegal. On the contrary, It is fucking LEGAL to download music, at least, here in The Netherlands!
But, my X360 is not hacked or updated with any kind of firmware. All my X360 games (8 games) are originals which I paid for. Everyday I enjoy the fact I can go on LIVE and I do not support game copies or hacked X360’s!
I download music, but I pay for it.
F**k the greedy miscrosoft Pigs. As long as they exist, there will ALWAYS be piracy. And the pirates ALWAYS win.
Freedom!
…and of course piracy was never around before Microsoft…never!
From my experience most piracy tends to be age related. After people get real jobs, real houses, and have real money in the bank (and pay real taxes, which is the time most liberals start to turn in to republicans) and can lose it all by one stupid act, interest in piracy tends to wane.
Sorry, don’t agree there. If games would be cheaper, piracy would become lesser. Music is a great example, since paid downloads you can choose the better numbers from an album and keep the costs low. If games would be cheaper downloads would be lower too. The offering would be the same, but less downloading.
I know enough adults who use pirated dvd’s/games and windows, but only the interrest into downloading music became less.
If games would be cheaper ?? So you are saying if something costs too much, then its OK to steal it?
I don’t think that’s what he’s saying at all. He’s saying that if prices were lowered, the need to ’steal’ would be lessened, not that because it’s pricey it’s more kudos to steal it.
@Redeyes: Agreed! When I was around 17-20 years old and student, I got me a PS One and had it modded and played tons of copied games which I got from a ’supplier’ for $5. Now that I’ve aged to 35 I got me a PSP and PS3 (okay, this is an Xbox site, but don’t blame me for that, haha) and didn’t mod those. First reason is I don’t feel like risking to brick those and flush a lot of cash. Secondly, I have a decent job now and fortunatelly make enough money to buy original games and finally, not to sound like a sissy, I feel obliged (maybe because of the job/money I have) to pay developer for their effort. So yes, I agree it is very likely agerelated.
Exactly, same here, I totally agree
Oh you should definitely mod that PSP.
It’s awesome.
and I’m 39 and still mod. just cause I can afford it doesn’t mean I want to waste money on games that won’t be used in a few months.
no but that does make you a asshole
For all dumbass pirates;
Pls get a job if u cant afford games or begone!
Get a fucking dictionary SpartanX360
