FIFA 08 information and screens hit the back of the net

Another year, another FIFA game. Last year EA Sports released the decent FIFA 07 to compete with the equally decent Pro Evolution Soccer 6. Just over a week ago, we announced to you that FIFA 08 will be coming multiple gaming consoles and now we have the first details of the game.

The guys over at IGN got to go and talk to Joe Booth of EA Canada to discuss FIFA 08 and they came back with a lot of information that will get football fans excited. Firstly, you can see the first four screenshots of the game above. While they look very similar to FIFA 07, the game is still only in the early stages of production.

It’s planned that from 2010 (to coincide with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa) it would be possible to team up with 10 of your friends to take on other teams of 11 players. But in order to do something as big as this, EA Canada has to prepare for it. And the first steps towards this magnificent plan is to be introduced in FIFA 08 in the form of the Be a Pro mode.

In Be a Pro mode, you will take on the role of a single football player. You will play the match like normal, except you will be relying upon the computer controlled players to get the ball to you or, if you are a defender, you’ll be relying on them to score. In this mode you will get hints and tips telling you things like you are offside or to move into open space. And don’t worry as you can change the player you are controlling in the pause menu if you get fed up staying in the one position.

One thing that has been in desperate need of changing is the shooting system. Thankfully it has been changed this year. Masters of long shots will be more effective this year and these shots will have a better chance of going into the net, or at least being on target. If you’re in perfect position for a long shot, the power meter will slowly increase as you hold down the shoot button.

Another feature to keep an eye on this year is the slow-pace button. This feature allows you to go into a slow motion mode and do trick moves with the ball. To use these trick moves when in slow motion, you’ll simply have to use the right stick. However, during the normal course of a match, the function of the right stick will, unfortunately, be once more to knock the ball into space.

Some great news for football fans is that FIFA 08 will run at 60 frames per second and will have 30 leagues, 620 teams, and over 15,00 players. EA wouldn’t say anything about Manager Mode or much about online. However, EA has confirmed to the delight of football fans that there will be Interactive Leagues.

FIFA 08 will be coming to Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, PC and mobile devices sometime later this. However, as of yet there has been no official released date confirmed. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as the release date is announced.

These are completely pointless screens as they arent in game, FIFA will be the same as every other year, it will have the 5 minute”WOW look at the graphics” factor then after that people instantly say “Still not pro evo” and will go play pro evo wondering why they even gave this shoddy attempt of a football game a chance. Its the same very year, few people including me may think “oh maybe this one will be diffeent” but it never is. Konami have nailed the gameplay and as a result will always win the longevity and gameplay award. Simple. If you play or watch real football then get pro evo, if you want an arcady, shoot from anywhere, crapy player animations and out of time commentary then fifa is the game for you.

Yawn. Once again, the usual barrage of CGI / intro screens, and a handful of gimmicky new gameplay features which won’t stick around for future versions.

PES might not exactly scream ‘innovation’, but at least it’s enjoyable. Plus it’s had the equivalent of this “Be A Pro” feature for years. Thing is, it’s not actually THAT fun, which is why they don’t exactly shout about it, but it’s there.

the “be a player” mode sounds interesting but seems to be the usual fifa once again

Studley that isnt CGI its gameplay the game has been looking the same the past 2yrs.

that “be a player mode” will be shite……relying on the computer to set up a half decent shot will be very hard to pull of but the Xbox live side of the game sounds very promising…..

Apparently too many people didn’t play FIFA 07. The engine needed a bit of tweaking for frame rates and stuff, but it was very fluid, and had 10x better animations than Pro Evo (I love Pro Evo, it’s my most played game, but FIFA had everything except the shooting and responsiveness over Evo).

Seconded

I sure hope those 30 leagues make it onto the 360 version.

Yeah, they will. Definitely.

I’m always a Pro Evo player but will keep an eye on FIFA.
I want to be able share (and therefore SAVE) replays. Fouls, goals, whatever, on XBOX Live. That would be very awesome.
Come on EA/Konami, make it happen.

Its gonna be average…again.
