Bill Gates has plans to out-do the Wii
If you speak to hardcore gamers, you’ll find that those that own a Wii haven’t turned it on for quite a few months. Why that is is varied, but nonetheless the Wii is certainly a machine for friends only. The 360 on the other hand has a good mix of games and they keep even the more casual gamers pinned to the sofa all day. Now though, Mr. Gates has hinted at a possible new direction Microsoft may take with their gaming division.
Speaking at “All Things D”, Gates said the following:
“Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you’re just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it”.
A bit like Wii then, Bill? “No, that’s not it. You can’t pick up your tennis racket. And swing it.”
Clearly not happy that the Wii remote doesn’t mould into different shapes depending on the game being played, it seems likely that at some point motion sensing will become a part of 360 gaming.
Whether or not this is the right direction or not remains to be seen. Given that the Wii is knackering and the PS3 has no rumble, perhaps Microsoft could find the sweet spot and make it work flawlessly. Then again, do we really want to have to move our controllers left right up and down all the time?

Normal controllers are more practical at the moment, it might be fun in certain games waving around a controller, but for being precise and for long playing sessions, LAN parties or competitions it is terrible

I personally like to play games most when I’m waking up or going to sleep. Therefore, jumping about all over the place like a loon isn’t very suitable. I appreciate what Nintendo do though, they have always been the innovator, however it’s not my personal cup of tea.
Remember how unpopular the idea of adding motion sensors to the PS3 controller was? Not only was this because of it was a blato rip off response, but it has proven to be a rubbish (imo) implementation to such a console. Keep it original Microsoft, don’t bugger about trying to mimic the competition and focus on what your potential fan base would want.

A boatload of triple A titles? When did that happen? The only assured triple A titles coming out right now are Halo 3 and GTAIV. The Wii’s success depends on whether or not the developers will be able to do something decent with the motion sensor controller… and given that they’ve loved developing for it so far, that looks to be fairly easy. MS has some competition in the future with the new Super Smash game.

Yes - MS released a Sidewinder gamepad with tilt sensors and Motorcross Madness which used it - about 10 years ago. Like all Wii games it was lame as you quickly realised that a normal control pad was far better for playing games.

Motion sensing is something that should work WITH current controllers. It shouldn’t be simply one or the other. So long as future games supporting motion do not lock out controller use, who cares? Let them do their thing. If it works, its for our benefit guys. Stop crying about a different direction for user input. Revisions are a way of life for a tech giant. But Motion sensing isn’ the best thing about wii, I mean It’s definately coo when it’s not abused but the pointer is where it’s at for shooters. After ou play Redstell, a decent FPS-better than it’s given credit for, for a while and get used to the new controlls. You’re popping off headshots like it was for todlers. If microsotft were to rip wii off, that’s where they should go. Either way they’re just going t piss off supporters who have helped get them to number 1 spot as far as saturation goes. I agree JL. I paid way to much for a wii off of Ebay in January. Showed all my friends wii sports. Then had fun playing Zelda for a couple weeks. Haven’t touched it since, thinking of selling it. My 360 rocks, even if I am on my fifth one (sucks so many broke but they were easy to get replaced) and In my opinion is the only console to own.

Except that every FF game has to be more epic and incredible than the last, with little in terms of gameplay change, where every Zelda game has something far different and new (sometimes bad) to it. At least Nintendo tries, though. All Square Enix cares about is shoveling out their equivalent of Hollywood big budget films.

And I may be wrong but anytime a DVD goes in my 360 and is played onto my Hi-Def LCD it is displaying in 720 (or so the TV says).

One word - Compression.
Lets put it this way. If you had a decent shoe collection would you buy a warehouse to house them or if they all fitted into the cupboard of your room when stacked a certain way which would you go for (obviously you will say the warehouse because you are a tit but if you look at it logically whats the point). In other words all that space and nothing to put in it (except all the jap games which will go crazy for filling it with CGI shit).
So to follow on to your argument of GTA, okay so if you had 50gb you coould fill it with massive gameplay area, but at the same time this will push up production time, which in turn pushes up production costs which always ends up being passed on to the consumer. The PS3 games are already more expensive at the moment so don’t really know if people want to spend even more.
I don’t mind paying £40 a year if it provides a robust system which is policed in some way to keep cheating pricks away and also gives me the benefits of being able to chat to my mates (with voice not text) before during and after playing a game, even if we are playing different games. You enjoy your free shitty service son, because everyone else I know with a PS3 doesn’t they still turn back on the 360 for that.

However it seems not to mention the fact that as software publishers do not work exclusivly for Sony (or very little now, anyway) the only thing they are interested in is profit.
The user base of Sony’s machine is small, it costs more to code for and as such is not economically viable to be the system of choice to develop for, so until they get a decent percentage of the market it makes far more sense to use the 360 (or Wii depending on what systems are being developed for in the case of the title but even then the Wii really requires them to make use of the Wiimote so it is a more logical jump to code the 360 and port the PS3).

I have dropped it from 6 feet in the air onto a sloped cement parking garage ramp only to jump down, pick up the battery, put it back in, and turn it back on only to see that it worked just as it did the day I bought it. One more example is my brothers PS2.
He bought it on the launch date, and has never even cleaned it. This thing is literally caked with dust, but it still works to this day. The other thing that is pissing me off is these developers saying $h17 like”Oh, it’s too hard to develop games for the PS3. BOOHOO!!!”. OF COURSE IT HARD TO DEVELOP FOR!!!!!! When the PS2 come out they said the exact same thing! The reason that it’s hard to develop for is because there’s NOTHING else LIKE it on the face of the earth! The 360 was like that too. The only reason that you don’t hear this kind of thing about the 360 is because most of the developers on the 360 platform have some kind of affiliation with Microsoft.
The 360 uses a series of three processors to do its dirty work, while the PS3 uses a revolutionary 8 core processor that is more powerful than any mainstream processor to date. If you want proof of that, then look at the folding@home project statistics. The other major thing is the GPUs. The 360 does have a more powerful GPU, but that’s because the 360’s GPU is dedicated to processing ALL of the graphics. The RSX GPU is actually primarily used to apply textures. The Cell’s processing power is used throughout the PS3 during it’s operation.
Also, the 360 has been out longer, and developers have had a considerably long time to grasp what the 360’s hardware can do, whereas the PS3 hasn’t been out that long. Something else to think about is the price of the consoles. Yes, the PS3 is quite expensive, but then again, so is the 360. Now, you might be saying to yourself”No it isn’t. The 360 is only $300 for the core system, and only $400 for the premium.” But think about this.
In order to get the 360 up to the specs that the PS3 is at, you have to buy the premium system($400), the WiFi adapter($100), and the HD-DVD drive($200). Add all of hose together and…OMG! That’s a $700 price tag. That’s actually $100 MORE than what you could get in a single black box instead in 3 white ones! Lastly, Microsoft has a larger base than Sony does. Sony makes it’s money solely on hardware. Microsoft is a domestic market with a large footprint and is into multiple markets.
Yes, I am a Sony fan, but not because of any series like Final Fantasy (I hate RPGs), rather, I like sony because I haven’t had a SINGLE issue with their products. All of Sony’s products do exactly what they are supposed to do, and they do everything quite well. I know about too many of Microsoft’s products that don’t do, or can’t handle what Microsoft said they can. Examples could be, oh, I dunno, EVERY SINGLE ONE of their operating systems! But MS does have a good habit of slowly making everything they get their greedy hands on slightly better over time. That’s my argument, and I’m sticking to it.
