Microsoft to finally fix the 360’s hardware problems?

We all fear the day that the dreaded 3 LoD will show up on our own beloved 360. We all know somebody with a Xbox 360 that suffered the blinking red lights of death. Although Microsoft never officially acknowledged the hardware problems there is clearly a problem with 360s dying. And as of today, it seems Microsoft is secretly working on a fix.

Today Logic Sunrise received a email from their contact close to Microsoft with some spicy new details about a new Xbox 360 cooling setup. Supposedly Microsoft added a secondary heatsink, next to the DVD-drive, that’s connected to the GPU’s heatsink. This way they are sure to spread the heat more and try to prevent the 360’s from overheating and causing the 3 LoD.

These photos seem very plausible as it would be a logical step by Microsoft to fix the dreaded 3 LoD problem that already put so many 360’s to the Microsoft Repair Centre. So if Microsoft says there isn’t a problem with the hardware design of the Xbox 360 why are they adding another heatsink? This surely isn’t the last we’ve heard about this rumor or the 3 LoD issue itself and we’ll keep you up to date accordingly.

have they added heatsinks already? Only cos I mentioned in the forums somewhere that the white casing on my 360 doesn’t fully fit since it came back from the repair centre. The metal casing underneath is too big.

Could very well be that recent repairs got an extra heatsink as part of the ‘fix’, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I can’t see shit with LOGIC-SUNRISE slapped all over it.

Yah same here. Their watermark is downright annoying.

I dunno, I think they could have put a slightly bigger watermark over it… /sarcasm

Seriously though, maybe they’re using the fugly watermark to hide the incongruence in their claims?

Lol

“So if Microsoft says there isn’t a problem with the hardware design of the Xbox 360 why are they adding another heatsink?”

Because microsoft constantly spreads the mushroom treatment to customers.

We heard it with the wireless headsets, the scratched discs, the dead 360s, the constant game patches, broken promises, etc. That’s their mantra.

I’m still trying to get them to remove my cc from my live account like mr. larry hyrb promised back in march.

Liars. That’s what they are, and that’s what they deal in.

like all big companies…but we love them so!

I found it funny that my launch wireless controller didnt work with my wireless headset, so I had to swap for a newer one yet MS insisted there was no problem. heh heh.

Still, about time they fixed this. The 360s biggest flaw is the 3 RLOD. I just hope when i got mine fixed in november they added the extra hardware…. mine hasn’t broken in a while!

yoi spelled center wrong. Im just letting you know

No he didn’t.

Comment by trj156 on 2007-06-13 04:21:35 | Reply

it’s spelled differently depending on where you are from, just to let you know

Sorry, I am English. ‘Centre’ and ‘Colour’ are original versions of the words, changed for ease of use in mainstream American culture by, you guessed it, Americans.

By the way, you missed the apostrophe in I’m. Just letting you know ;)

I do laugh when an american tries to pick someone from Britain about language and spelling after single handedly bastardizing the entire language beacause you are to thick to understand silent letters etc.

Comment by Badabing on 2007-06-13 11:51:14 | Reply

You’re not a master of it yourself yet either ..

It’s: too thick ;)

Comment by P-niiice on 2007-06-13 12:47:26 | Reply

Also, there should be a comma after “letters”, and “single handedly” should be hyphenated. You also missed the capitalization of “american”. `

Comment by Taomyn on 2007-06-13 12:55:22 | Reply

..and “bastardising”…..another Americanism

Comment by newmodel on 2007-06-13 15:39:16 | Reply

Broad sweeping generalizations are fun! The reason these two wonderful cultures spell words differently is because prior to the release of the first dictionaries the English Language was NOT standardized; people spelled things however they goddamn well pleased. The current spellings are due to the work of Johnson and Webster; who each tried to form a logical standard for spelling in their respective countries.

Hey if I had the time to check my post without the possibility of getting grabbed sending it at work the quality would improve.

Until then I only need to be able to spell:

Fuck you too.

Yup okay, you keep thinking that.

Anyway even if I did at least I would be a manager, you would have to work your arse off for a good couple of years before you are promoted from McD’s shit shoveling duty.

So I put your points down to the green eyed monster

My 360 died recently and M$ here in Australia are trying to tell me I need to pay $200 to fix it!!! What a disgrace. Luckily here we have strong consumer rights and I’m on my way to an out of warranty free fix. They’ve already offered 50% off repairs. A little more pressure and it’ll be free. I hate M$!!!!!!

Over here we brits get royally screwed - not to mention we pay a 3rd more for everything games related for no decent reason other than we easy to rip off and too polite to moan. Yes you aussies having everything better, better government and immigration policies and better weather - but more deadly animals. Guess it is a fair trade…

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-06-13 19:01:58 | Reply

Fair trade my arse!

They populated the damn country by being a bunch of criminals and we punished them by sending them to a hotter country!

Lucky bastards.

Don’t take offense however, just having a joke and half my family are Australian.

The lucky raping, murdering criminal half anyway.

its still going to be hot…they need to add more airflow and change the cpu

Comment by Kaidra on 2007-06-13 06:02:52 | Reply

tron, I’m in the same boat, alas M$ hasn’t offered the 50% off yet (which I wouldn’t pay anyway). I contacted the ACCC and they will investigate the whole thing if a pattern emerges. I’d suggest to anyone in Aus., that if they are not happy with the service they receive from MS, to lodge a complaint with consumer affairs (www.consumer.vic.gov.au) for those in Victoria.

Hey Kaidra check out this link.
http://forums.xbox.com/12691994/ShowPost.aspx
There’s heaps of info there and other pissed off Aussies!!!! I’ve spoken to the ACCC and sent of a letter of demand.
For you guys in Britain you must have some form of consumer watchdog. Call them and put pressure on M$. They will crack under pressure because consumers do actually have rights.
Maybe its because we’re all convicts we dont trust anybody…either way I dont trust M$!!!

Comment by tron on 2007-06-15 03:36:58 | Reply

Just got confirmation that M$ will repair my console for free. So keep at them and know your consumer rights!!!!

An Extension to GPU block is a clever step.

Comment by KineticOnline on 2007-06-13 10:39:27 | Reply

Extending the heat sinks will only really help spread the heat out, just meaning that it will take that bit longer to overheat. And then when it does more of the system is buggered than before.

MS need tio do a few things.
1. Allow us to open the system (no dust = less chance of failure)
2. Change the design of the case (overlaping air holes dont allow for proper airflow)
4. Get the cooler cpu released asap

Comment by KineticOnline on 2007-06-13 10:41:42 | Reply

Damm i missed 3, use some decent kind of cooling system (more heat sinks just disrupt airflow further)

More heatsinks hopefully means a quieter 360. I’m really annoyed by the sound my 360 makes, a pal of mine has the benq version and it’s a bit less noisy.

So what was the problem with the wireless headset anyway?

Comment by AndyC on 2007-06-13 15:51:42 | Reply

Microsoft are okay… It’s a hell of a juicy bit of kit to have gotten to market when they did, and Xbox 1 was a world-beater. Truly an amazing machine for it’s time. It’s easy to nit pick it I suppose. I’ll wait and see what else goes wrong with the POS3. Anybody seen any games for it yet or is it a webserver or what? May 2006 and still running…

Comment by tron on 2007-06-14 04:50:59 | Reply

You wont like M$ when your console breaks…just like the 30% of all other consloes!

Comment by Andy on 2007-06-13 17:12:34 | Reply

I have a Dec 2005 launch vintage console that has never failed once - never even locked up - it is located in my basement, which is the coolest part of the house. Usually between 18-21 c down there - I am beginning to suspect that if we did a survey of 360 reliability, we would find that consoles located in basements fare better than those in the upper levels of households.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-06-14 15:25:07 | Reply

Well i also have the launch console with not one bit of trouble and it has survived a house move.

I do live in Scotland though so it is pretty much cold all the fucking time.

End of the year will be 2 years I got my 360, and not a single problem, it’s in the top floor no AC no fans I think it depend where you place it mine is close from the window which is open in the summer, also not to close from the wall and specially not in those AV furniture. The xbox360 hardware is not perfect but you have to take care of your product. Anyway I hope the elite will have a better cooling and a better dvd drive.

i live in england and bought a console on launch day - this lasted 6 months
the reconditioned one they sent me then lasted another 6 months
the next reconditioned one (interesting this one had a manu date PRE-DATING my first one)
this one lasted 3 MONTHS - this one they habe actually repaired - or at least bothered to use the same serial sticker

i have never been asked to pay a penny for any of the 4 ‘repairs’ and will refuse to pay if it goes again !
seriously i love the console but am getting a bit hacked off with the reliability
i also own a ps2 - still in service after 5 years , a psp - still in service after 2 years
and i am wagering my ps3 is going to last longer than 4 xbox 360s in the space of approx 18 months………….

Come see clear photos, and links to tons of articles on this heatsink and the 360.

My opinion, Recall, Recall, Recall the xbox 360.
Give us all an ELITE!
