More zombie-tastic RE5 details
The Resident Evil 5 trailer at E3 was awesome. We don’t care that it didn’t really reveal much about the game or show anything amazingly revolutionary. That’s not the point. It looked awesome and it was wonderfully terrifying and creepy. What more can you ask from a Resident Evil game? The latest issue of Famitsu shares some interesting new information courtesy of an interview with producer Jun Takeuchi.
Whilst only some vague details were imparted during the interview, it does go some way to giving us a better idea of how the game will play and the story will pan out. In RE5 Chris Redfield is a member of a group called BSAA. Takeuchi explains that something mysterious has happened in the desert that serves as the game’s setting. Naturally, the BSAA has been sent in to take a closer look.
Once there, Chris encounters a new type of enemy. Apprently they will be something of human form that has intelligence. However, the baddies aren’t zombies and they aren’t the gandos from RE4 (ganados are humans who have become infested by the mind-controlling Las Plagas parasites). In addition to a new enemy a damsel in distress will also make an appearance in the game. She’s well known to fans of the series and will feature in the full version of the trailer which will be available on XBOX Live and the PSN later this month). She’ll have a very significant role in both the story and gameplay.
Talking of gameplay, and we can expect some interesting new additions. Takeuchi noted that the most difficult element in developing the fifth instalment has been mixing into and building upon the gameplay of RE4. Whilst we’ll still be seeing all the action with Chris appearing on the left side of the screen, Takeuchi also promised a major surprise in terms of an evolution to the gameplay. Also, if you thought that RE5 looked a lot like RE4 after seeing the E3 trailer, you won’t think that when you see the next trailer.
On the importance of light to the series, Takeuchi spoke about how it will play a role in RE5. He explains that if you spend a prolonged amount of time in a very dark space and then step out into the bright outside world, you won’t be able to see anything. Just like in real life, your ‘eyes’ in the game will take time to adapt to the dramatic change in light levels. This will, momentarily, make you almost totally blind. The same thing happens when you go from light to dark area. Scary stuff.
Unfortunately, Takeuchi refused to provide any sort of release date for RE5. Hopefully it will turn up some time before 2010, which might seem like forever, but those of you who loved the brilliance of RE4 will know it is well worth the wait. Hopefully we’ll have more on this game for you soon.
